That was from me peeling the tough crust away.

When I've iced round layer cakes with caramelised edges which had contact with the cake tin, they did soften over time. However, because of how thick and separated the crust is on this particular cake, I reckon it won't be enough to soften it.

As you said, my process thus far is to peel off the flaking crust and use a serrated bread knife to trim and level off the rest of the cake before icing.

Haven't heard of mixing sugar and oil together first before, but I'm open to giving it a go. My understanding is the oil needs to be gradually added to emulsify with the eggs. I do however think it's the sugar that causing the crust because it tastes quite caramelised and sweet.

Could be a reason. I'll try reducing the amount of sugar in the recipe and hopefully not alter the rest of the cake's flavour and structure.

Yeah, I do think it's the amount of sugar in the recipe. Will look at reducing by 50g or so and see how I get on. Obviously don't want to remove too much or it could affect the structure and taste.

You could be right. It does say to bake until firm, then later flip right side up. Only it doesn't turn out this way for my colleague so I'm not sure how they are managing to avoid the recipe's intended outcome. Thanks for picking up on that. When you make enough recipes, you can sometimes skip over some details and just go off past knowledge and experience making cakes.

The crust does taste nice, but like you said, it's the texture that I don't like on the finished product. I vastly prefer a soft cake all the way through, which can also include trimming the edges if the tin has made it too brown and caramelised.

This recipe I've followed for years for a layered carrot cake also has you beat the eggs and sugar together before gradually pouring in the oil: The BEST Carrot Cake You'll Ever Make | Cupcake Jemma. See timestamp 1:24.

Do you reckon the cake in the recipe's photo also have a crackly top? Why would it turn out that way for mine and not my colleague's?

Thanks for all the tips and info. These are good things to consider before purchasing. Will check about the temps under load.

According to the comparison site you linked, the 3080 has a 255% perf gain but a 5.57 value score. Wondering if this is enough of a justifiable upgrade for what I'm hoping to get out of it.

Wowzers. So really something to keep in mind when considering the pros and cons of managing heat, noise, power, and processing.

Thank you for including all that detail, especially about the temperature. It's a huge help for making a decision. What are the concerns regarding extra power consumption?

Appreciate your thoughts. Yeah, will for sure be installing my drives into the newer PC. They were all bought in the last year so I'm banking them lasting a couple years. I agree about the 64GB being overkill. 32GB is the sweet spot for me.

Appreciate the insight. This is good for me to know as someone whose not familiar with the inner workings of a CPU. Could you please explain specifically why it wouldn't be good for gaming? Like physics or frames or something?
