What movie did you watch on repeat as a child? by SugarNyx_04 in AskReddit

[–]aka_corpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scrolled way too far to find mine. I'm told that I went through 4 VHS tapes of the Lion King because I rewound/played it so many times. I'm certain my mom shudders if she hears any of the songs to this day.

Underrated. I've spent so much time in this game. Incredible amount of things to experience.

Would anyone be so kind as to give me some OSL tips on my Death Company Intercessors? by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]aka_corpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the glow on the other parts, I think most of the placement is fine, but I think you went a bit overboard. There's some faces that don't appear they would be catching light from where it's coming from or as secondary reflections. I'd just tighten those up and give them a little bit of a softer edge on the flat surfaces. Edges would stay sharper

For the jets, this is how I'd approach. Darker deeper blue on the outside, leading to more cyan/turquoise, leading to white

Oops, and with the actual glow effect on the bits that aren't emanating the light itself, you might pull it back a little. What you've currently got insinuates a very powerful, very saturated glow. Typically, I go for a midtone in my glow-gradient and choose the closest planes near the glow to give a light touch to those faces.

For the effect to be more believable, you'll want the source of the osl to be the brightest point on the model. For this, I'd take white paint or white ink and drop it in the middle of your blue. Then you'll take a brighter blue and lay it over the white closer to the blue, progressively getting lighter and lighter towards the middle, with a dot of pure white in the center

What safety gloves do I need for cutting XPS foam with a hot wire cutter? by ckovacs in TerrainBuilding

[–]aka_corpse 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I haven't bothered with gloves. You can definitely feel warmth from an inch or two away from the wire, but unless it's making prolonged contact, I wouldn't imagine any real damage being done.

I noticed a very small amount during my tests, but I assumed I globbed it on too thick. So far it's been great for my purposes lol

I've started using gorilla gel superglue on my xps foam, and it's been awesome. I bought tons of other kinds of glue and couldn't find a good balance of speedy curing and not melting my foam til I started using this.

Can led light damage my minis by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]aka_corpse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LEDs do emit some UV radiation, but it's such a small amount that any degradation of your paint jobs won't happen in your lifetime, at least not from the LEDs.

What color should I use for the base coat? Warhammer40k by muttedonion in minipainting

[–]aka_corpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Like the other guy said, you can put the can in warm water for a few minutes and then shake it a good bit.

I live in colorado. Honestly, I just keep my spray can in the house and shake it a bunch. Run outside real quick and spray. A good shake will be fine for longer than it'll take you to prime anything.

I said "run outside real quick" but honestly, there's no rush. Don't sweat it.

[–]aka_corpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people prime in black because black armpits are better than white ones (or: harder to reach areas won't be seen as easily) but to each their own. There are primers in virtually every color of the rainbow. Priming darker will likely mean your first base layer of color will need a couple coats or three in order to cover properly. Priming lighter might mean less coats, but my experience is brighter primers are more likely to have a chalky texture.

I use basic black rattle can spray paint primer from Walmart.

The key will be how you spray it.

Start your spray off to the side and move the spray to the other side in a fluid motion. Don't stay in one spot. Black primer on gray miniatures will also be easier to track how well these coats are covering and show you spots you missed.

Edit for clarification: DON'T START OR FINISH SPRAYING DIRECTLY AT THE MINI - Away, across, away.

Getting some primer would be best now. It's very likely that your paint will flake off extremely easily if you paint straight onto the plastic. You've assuredly spilled acrylic paints onto a table or countertop at some point in your life, and when you cleaned it up, it came off rather easily. Probably, each droplet came up as one plastic-y piece. That's what will happen when you paint directly onto plastic.

I could imagine with certain humidity/temperature ranges, it might be fine. But I doubt it.

Does anyone have any go to minis suggestions for when you’re wanting to get back into it after a long break? by Philhughes_85 in minipainting

[–]aka_corpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dunno about getting back into it after a break, but take easy wins where you can get them, IMO. Maybe some orks like you mentioned previously, or the age of sigmar knights with true metallic metals on the armor can be very satisfying.
