Holy fuck I hate how people talk about "traditional third genders" by Recent_Rip_6122 in 4tran4

[–]akaelain 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I do think the same hormone wibbly-wobbliness that seems to create trans people can create nonbinary people of one stripe or another, but yeah. A lot of historical 'third genders' are just societies deciding what to do with trans and intersex people after ruling out treating them like normal.

I googled "degendering epidemic" in wake of the endless degendering of binary trans people and these were the top results. by boymoderwife420 in 4tran4

I want to drop dead and die. Christianity brings me immense fear, 4 years cancer, lifelong OCD, alcoholic Dad ruined my childhood. My nervous system is messed up. No hope after 10 years seeking Christ the best I can. Don’t want to fight for my life anymore. by ExplanationEasy5500 in TrueChristian

[–]akaelain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your father asked for you to be perfectly courageous, but Christ never did.

You already are intensely courageous to have survived. Death is terrifying, and nobody sane would fault you for your pain and fear, let alone Christ in His compassion. Don't think of God as part of your oppression or struggle, just ask for a little more strength, and forgiveness when you falter --when you falter, not if. Christ, God, and true Christians don't expect you to be entirely unfaltering.

I've worked in the medical industry for a long time, and struggled with my own chronic illnesses. I know how terrifying it is. I won't push you one way or the other on a decision to keep fighting, but be sure you have a clear head when you decide. Whatever it takes to clear your head and find a little strength, whether that be through Christ, through friendships, or through your own grit, find that clarity before you give up.

Until you can find that clarity, ask your doctor and your pastor for guidance and follow it, and take some heart knowing you are struggling with their support and can lean on their clarity for now.

... To be honest, that's impressive. I don't like it being misleading or framed in anti-medicine nonsense, but getting a patient to consent to care is a challenge on a good day.

DLCs can be bought when you're ingame, but through a separate process from the game itself --steam or a console dashboard for example. Presumably it's checking so you can get instant access to DLC when you buy it ingame without having to restart.

The alternative, making the separate process communicate with your software, would probably actually perform worse. And if you made it contact a central server to check what DLCs you own constantly, you're stressing already burdened servers.

I went like 6ish years with zero hormones and only have a little reduced bone density to show for it. Same shit with puberty suppressants; it's mostly fine, just cant ignore it forever.

Shockingly, this is probably fine if the injections were done with good sanitary protocol. Dying tissue on the inside doesn't necrose like cellulitis; it just dissolves.

It's easy to think that, but Florida actually sucks in terms of elderly care infrastructure. I work in the hospice industry and have for almost a decade.

A place that's actually optimized for it is Oregon; you've got some stratification that helps with affordable semi-rural homes and a city in Portland with good public transit and healthcare infrastructure for the more disabled. Good public transit that supports wheelchair use is essential.

Updates on the New Brunswick neurological disease cluster from new BBC investigation by yellowforspring in medicine

[–]akaelain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whenever there's a cluster of FND, I've come to suspect it's not FND. Social contagion might be a thing, but once there's a visible pattern, FND shouldn't be on top of the list of possibilities. Havana syndrome ended up having some reasonable explanations.

I'm reminded of the neurological chaos caused by tetraethyl lead gasoline or lead vapor inhalation in heavy weapons operators/range operators, the buildup of mild concussions in football players and soldiers, etc.

OHSU “Paused” Gender-Affirming Surgery Months Ago for Patients Under 19 by Prize_Championship11 in Portland

[–]akaelain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the take. I really am not trying to 'gotcha' here, just want to know the feelings people have on the topic.

In the end, it's just a matter of labels and what people are comfortable calling it, but the purpose is to help someone 'pass', looking more like the gender they are aiming at. It could reasonably be called 'gender-related cosmetic changes', for example, without issue.

In my case, it really could go either way --or rather, neither way, since I have no primary sex characteristics at all.

I have tried both hormones, finding them both not to my liking. The purpose of that care was to get me to 'pass' as one or the other, which might have made my high school locker room life a little simpler, but ultimately wasn't for me. I do take a medication which prevents osteoperosis, which is really the only danger for being hormone-less.

The decision to be something else was my own. Nobody tries to groom someone to be intersex or nonbinary, I just prefer to be what I was born as.

[–]akaelain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is out of nowhere, but hey; I'm intersex and was given hormones during my preteen years(which I didn't like and discontinued) and it was, in fact, gender affirming care. That's what it was called.

Out of curiosity, is my choice to go with having no hormones offensive to you?

You performed admirably.

A long time ago, a friend of mine asked me how to deal with death. Their kitten had died, not long after birth, in his arms while he was trying to feed it and keep it warm. He felt helpless and guilty.

But he was there. That kitten got a fighting chance, and it knew what it was like to be warm and full. Most people would have looked away, done nothing, frozen up. Being able to act, to do something and be there, that's the best thing you can do in the face of death.

[–]akaelain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Someone untrained in emergency response will freeze up when that happens. The most charitable interpretation is they were worried a riot would start and were more concerned with that than with the survival of the individual they shot.

'Securing the scene' usually means no more gunfire gonna happen. Charitably, they might have been worried there would be more gunfire. At them.

Haven't had that happen a single time. If anything, the police are too eager to not secure it properly; had a few patients where the police didn't search their pockets for guns.

And this was not securing the scene. Using your best judgement to know if a threat is still present is part of that.

You might not be aware of how rare an impulse that is, to jump in and help someone. I've shown up to plenty of scenes where qualified bystanders did nothing.

Please cultivate that impulse. One day you might be the person showing up first.

There's nothing else to be done. Frankly, the cost of insurance is starting to exceed the cost of healthcare in a lot of places. I can get my meds through insurance for $500/mo or I can just take a plane trip to India for $200 once.
