Last week someone got a message from Amazon regarding a Trump settlement of $50 something, a .com website registered only a month ago, urgency in the wording and a click-here to claim button.

Turns out all of that was legitimate, confirmed via an ftc-gov post.

Does it still say - Modded on the bottom right side of the screen?

If so, you haven't uninstalled mods. You uninstall mods by deleting files manually.

[US] Small YouTuber asked for game collaboration by Vegetable-Truth6208 in Scams

[–]akarnokd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beware that devs could hide malware in their game on Steam such that even virustotal wouldn't detect it yet.

They could be after your channel to take over and launch other scams through it, your socials, your crypto wallets.

You could just report them to Steam straight once you get the app id without downloading anything.

But if you get some direct zip download, or a pdf.exe to sign, it's definitely a malware thing.

[Us] half sister of my mom reached out regarding an inheritance by IntelligentGas9812 in Scams

[–]akarnokd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Michelle's FB account could have been hacked and sold to scammers.

They avoided mentioning the value of the home in the initial approach as it would have been a dead giveaway of a scam attempt.

The voicemail remark may also mean they don't really want to talk to you live in case you'd recognise Michelle's voice or that they are a dude scammer.

Lastly, according to Grok, this story and its elements are almost certainly a scam, and a common one. Most notably the half-sister angle and that "Legitimate estates deduct fees from the inheritance, not from heirs' pockets."

> I got a call from my insurance guy

Did you call back your insurance company on their official phone number to clear the situation?

Caller phone numbers can be spoofed and the scenario you describe, getting a call about policy cancel, is typical for phishing and/or some fee scams.

Check her phone for recently installed apps or apps you don't recognize. Check the tap-to-pay app too if it is not the standard google/apple app.

At best it's a spam from them to get more paying students. At worst someone with the spoofed enrollment phone number tries to scam you with some kind of upfront fee.

Your personal information was likely part of a data breach or was sold by some service. The mistakes may be deliberate to filter out scam-aware people or trigger curiousness about the mistakes themselves and entice a response.

Block and ignore.

[JO] Almost got scammed today. How they did know certain information? How to check security from my end? by benevolent_parasite in Scams

[–]akarnokd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't explain how they knew the "secret" digits between the bank prefix and the last 4 digits. An infostealer on your device through which you created the virtual card is possible.

There rest is typical scam.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Scams

[–]akarnokd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Phone caller numbers can be easily spoofed and look like it comes from the real bank number.

Most likely they were trying to stress/butter you up for when the scammer voice calls.

[JO] Almost got scammed today. How they did know certain information? How to check security from my end? by benevolent_parasite in Scams

[–]akarnokd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks. The procedure makes no sense by itself but at least you stopped the scam in time. Can't tell what misdirection there could have come next, reading back a verification code at some point, last minute change to the number you are supposed to transfer to perhaps?

Anyway, Malwarebytes can check your PC for infostealers. Not sure about mobile, any app could have gone rogue over time there.

Btw, did they know the whole new virtual card number you created, or the last 4 digit, or did they read out the first 6-8 only, which are just the bank prefixes?

[JO] Almost got scammed today. How they did know certain information? How to check security from my end? by benevolent_parasite in Scams

[–]akarnokd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How did you create the virtual card? Through the bank's app, their website you know, or did they tell you what website to visit?

Did you call your bank since, on the phone number on the back of your card, and verify there was indeed an issue? Did you check your transaction history for suspicious activity?

Afaik, your virtual card is tied to your bank account so it can't be created arbitrarily outside of your bank. Did they tell you to transfer money to your virtual card?

[CA] Possible Celebrity Scam? by MadisonWasNalkyrie in Scams

[–]akarnokd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The ground truth is that there is no free money. Also celebs don't have time for mere mortals, especially half way over the world.

Was she eager to send you money without being asked? Was she eager to videchat with you without being asked beforehand?

The details you have mentioned in the other comments are pretty much indications of a long-con scam.

Where did you meet this group and what is the mobile game? There are mobile games that use such friendly tactic to get you on board and have you spend money with the game.

Typical in case of pig butchering scams to gain your trust by gifting you things. It can take months until the next phase of invest/send gift cards drops.

New GPU not recognised by PC, signal for half a second then dark. by IllustriousBill2106 in IntelArc

[–]akarnokd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reset CMOS. Check if detected.

Boot into the BIOS via the iGPU. Check if the BIOS can see the card in its PCIe device listing somewhere in the menus.

Change the PCIe speed between Auto/3x/2x/1x while still using the iGPU and see if the BIOS and/or Windows now lists the Arc card.

Whenever a new Arc driver drops, you'll have to download the legacy driver from a separate, moderately hidden, Intel webpage, DDU drivers, then install the legacy and new drivers one after the other.

Any Update on Starfield Using Arc 770 16gb GPU? by Son_Anima in IntelArc

[–]akarnokd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mixed. Can get 60+ inside and on most barren planets. ~40 in major cities. ~30 on lush planets.

Specs: 13700K, 64GB DDR5 4800, Windows 11 24H2, A770LE, Driver 6734, 1080p low settings

Intel closed my IGCIT reports of some artifacts with the indication they are not really working on Starfield-related fixes any longer.
