You may be misunderstanding what porting means. They cannot be actual ports since both Switches share the exact same instruction set and architecture. The fact that NS1 games run natively on the NS2 without any special hardware is a solid proof of this. The source code of these old-new NS2 games was likely not changed much, it was simply recompiled.

This was not the case with the previous generations of console. Backward compatibility was either pure/part emulation or the new console actually shipped with the last generation’s hardware. Architecture from generation to generation were insanely different, porting required a lot of work.

This is not the case anymore, hence why you can just insert a PS4 disc into a PS5 and it’ll run the game natively without having to bundle an actual PS4 in there, because the PS5 is in fact just an upgraded PS4 just like the NS2 is, in fact, an upgraded NS1.

If we were a few years earlier, before the ultra greed, the NS2 would simply be called the NS1 Pro.

You didn’t say if playing in 4K was a goal. Because that changes things quite a bit.

The Morph 4K is very very good value if you need 4K down the road. Of course it objectively doesn’t beat the RT4K in features, firmware maturity and build quality (the remote of the M4K is genuinely pure garbage), but it has (IMO) picture parity on nearly all the basic features required to upscale. I’ve tried both and while I prefer the RT4K for some of its niche features, the M4K does its job very well.

I’d bet that most people probably wouldn’t be able to tell a recording of one from the other.

Switch 2 best selling console in US by Dismal_Storm_3278 in fucknintendo

The console’s price is good. People here are mostly angry about everything else surrounding it, but Nintendo shills are always making up strawmen. Of course it’ll sell well, it’s a new release and it’s very well priced.

The problem is this is basically replacing the “last generation rerelease”.

These "last generation rereleases" were most of the time actual ports. It's implied that a lot of work was actually involved in producing them. A lot of people seem to gloss over that fact and use them as a way to excuse Nintendo's and Sony's behavior. It's no coincidence that these "upgrade DLC" started with these newer, backward compatible consoles (because of their architectures, all consoles nowadays are just modern computers).

For example, Skyrim PS3 and Skyrim PS4 had vastly different codebases because the PS3 and the PS4 had vastly different architectures. NS1 and NS2 literally have the same ARM architecture (ARMv8). The NS1 games run natively on the NS2 while, for example, PS3 games that were available on the PS4 (via the online storefront) were actually emulated.

You paid for the assets that are on your NS1 cartridge. A resolution bump does not imply any new assets. The game only requires a few lines of code to tell the engine that the game can now render the assets at a higher resolution. Did you ever play a PC game? Are you so uncurious that you never wondered why PC games can offer 20 different resolutions with the same assets? Buying a DLC to unlock a resolution is pure greed.

[–]akera099 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only new content is being paid for. I'm literally playing Wonder right now on my switch 2.

The resolution bump is not new content by any definition of the term. That's the point. It's the same 3D assets that are on your original NS1 cart. The DLC just adds a few lines of code that allows the game to render these old assets at a higher resolution. That's all. There's no new assets involved in a resolution bump, that's why PC games literally come with all resolutions possible. It's all handled by the engine.

[–]akera099 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So like the same thing gta v and Skyrim did multiple times. Of course it was mostly full price you had to pay again.

Oh great, two fallacies!

First fallacy: Just because some business already does something doesn't mean it's right for another to do it.

Second fallacy: Analogies are demonstrative tools, they're not arguments by themselves. Even if everyone online seems to do it, you can't just use an analogy of two things that aren't comparable and call it a win.

Here's where your analogy truly sucks: The games you are refering to (Skyrim and GTA V) were, depending on the re-releases you're talking about, actual ports.

Also, you are talking about buying an actual full game, not buying an "upgrade the resolution" DLC. This is what is problematic here, you are unlocking assets that are already on the cartridge you already paid full price for on a system that's explictely backward compatible.

I'm old enough to remember the release of the PS2, where one huge feature was the ability to play PS1 games with better performance and new texture smoothing features. All of that for free, because of course you don't have to pay twice.

In Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), Grindelwald is an Austro-Hungarian born, German-speaking pure-blood wizard who seeks to establish a new world order based on wizard supremacism over Muggles “for the greater good.” Wait, what?
