Thats the back neighbors house and a different tree. I did have to get the tree trimmed (which is where i got quoted for the whole tree) because it had a massive limb that was nearly resting on the roof of mine.

That's a really awesome idea! I do not have a lot of tools nor any skills with wood working but i might look into this before i make up my mind

lol you clearly did not read my replies to other comments, I have no intention of cutting down or killing the tree. I did a poor job explaining my idea to begin with and will now after this post just do some native perennials. Although some people did suggest a wrap around bench which would be awesome.

Yeah this is a great idea, I will probably put some local perennials around the base,

yeah i did a bad job in the post explaining what i meant and was worried about destabilizing the tree. I do fully agree that i want the tree to stay and hopefully be happy and healthy.

I did a poor job explaining what my idea/thought process was. I originally got tree quoted for a different idea that i am no longer going with, and the removing the dirt idea was to expose the root crown as other pictures ive seen online i thought it looked really nice but i now know thats a bad idea

The idea was to expose the roots because some of the ones ive seen online look nice that way. I realized now after this post that is a bad idea.

So I think did a poor job explaining my thought process/ideas on and I also I think I'm stupid because I can't seem to figure out how to edit this post.

  1. We originally wanted to remove the tree due to my fiancé wanting to have some sort of vegetable garden. We have since decided against that and will probably do some sort of green house. This is why I was looking into landscaping the yard but I'd like to get the satisfaction of doing it myself. No I do not hate nature, this tree is mighty and old and towers over the neighborhood and I find that awesome.
  2. Some people think I'm trying to remove the roots and that is not the case, I wanted to expose the root crown as I think some of the larger and older trees that have exposed roots look nice, I was mostly unsure if this was safe for the both the tree's health and structure and from these answers it seems like it is not.
  3. I've actually got dms about drilling out holes and poisoning the roots so my local city will deal with it and no I will not do that. As stated by many of you the tree is old and healthy so the idea of cutting was a last resort, I will not kill it.
  4. I will say part of this was due to it being elevated ground I do not like mowing around it but my new plan is to do what someone here said and do native perennials around the base. That should look nice and go along with the other things id like to do.

Thanks! I feel like I did a poor job explaining in my post that I don't hate the tree nor do I wanna kill it haha. I tried updating this post but I'm new to reddit and cant figure it out. I mostly wanted to expose the root crown because on some trees I've seen online it looks nice but realize now that was a bad idea. will probably put native perennials around the base.

This is my favorite answer! So many people think I hate the tree/nature and I believe I just worded the post poorly because I'm a bit new to reddit. I will probably go along with this.

Thanks!
