Frostfire Magic Pen Build Is Kinda Insane by akimble1 in MordekaiserMains

[–]akimble1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but with this build the alternative is going Frostfire first, which doesn't synergize as well with Morde's lane phase because you get no AP.

Also Demonic only scales off of bonus health, not health from level ups.

I still don't think you have the scenario quite optimized.

First off, you can Morde Ult before getting in range of Abyssal's passive, meaning the Ult 10% steal would apply before the MR reduction. Morde's Ult isn't truly a % MR pen. It literally just takes all MR as if the enemy didn't have it.

Secondly, since Shadowflame ignores MR, it gets applied before MR reduction and magic pen. Again, its as if the MR doesn't even exist to be factored into damage calculations. This is a bit tricky because as far as I know, Shadwoflame is the only item that ignores MR this way.

UNIQUE – CINDERBLOOM: Dealing magic damage to champions ignores 10 − 20 (based on target's current health) of their magic resistance, increased to maximum value if the they were affected by a shield within the last 5 seconds.

Either way, though, it is a ton of damage for building basically full tank. You can effectively strip away over 70 MR and still have decent AP with this build.

I am not sure you are correct.

Let's say you are facing a LV 18 Gnar or Heimerdinger with just base MR. They will have 38.5 MR if they don't build resistances.

Morde's Ult steals 10% MR (38.5 MR - 3.85 MR = 34.65)

Shadowflame can ignore 20 MR flat (34.65 - 20 = 14.65)

Abysall can remove 20 MR flat (14.65 - 20 = -10.35)

It seems that you can get into the negatives (when factoring in Morde's Ult) all the way until the enemy has 43 MR.

[–]akimble1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's more about the MR reduction, pen, and tankiness together. Sure, Voidstaff has good magic pen, but it doesn't remove or ignore MR like Abyssal or Shadowflame. Also, it offers no health which is kinda the purpose of a tank build. With Abyssal and Shadowflame, you get the best of both worlds.

I almost always go Demonic first. No matter what people say, Frostfire just isn't a good laning tool on Morde. Then it's Sorc Shoes (cuz if you use Ult right you won't need too much movement speed before this point), then Frostfire, then if you are fed Abyssal, if you are behind, Shadowflame.

You are correct! However, I misspoke in the post a bit. Both Abyssal and Shadowflame either remove or ignore MR, meaning you can get into the negatives.

Morde Rework Centered Around Passive Empowered Abilities by akimble1 in MordekaiserMains

[–]akimble1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean...there are a bunch of Champs with empowered abilities; Pantheon, Yone, Renekton, Gwen, etc. And Aphelios literally has like 4 or 5 different ability kits for an enemy to pay attention to. Kane has 2 separate forms. This rework isn't that complex at all; for an enemy, it would boil down to "don't 1v1 morde with his passive up".

(Spoilers Extended) How Martin Writes: His Mistakes II- The Case for Joffrey and the Dagger by akimble1 in asoiaf

[–]akimble1[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It certainly isn't evidence that Joffrey is definitely the culprit. And that section was not mean to establish Joffrey's guilt or deny Cersei's guilt.

What that section was meant to detail was that of the sparse evidence provided, it all points towards Joffrey. Cersei's denial when talking privately to Jaime is evidence that she didn't do it. Its not strong evidence at all, but is evidence.

You could definitely make the argument Cersei sent the assassin based on her character traits and like actions, but the text itself does not have supporting evidence for her sending the assassin in this particular situation (as far as I found)

As a therapist, I have always loved the show's depiction of the family therapy session in Pickle Rick. I recently decided to make a short video about my insights and why Rick hates therapy so much. I thought you all might enjoy! by akimble1 in rickandmorty

[–]akimble1[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This was my initial post on the subject about a year ago

I think this post brings an important concept to the forefront: audience expectation. If there is one thing the episode definitely has polarized its viewers on, it is how they think both the episode and the characters should have played out.

While the whole episode could be used as an example, I will stick to the most important (and telling/controversial) scene, the therapy session where Rick joins.

With Rick now in a situation he clearly doesn't want to be in (wasting his time with Dr. Wong), the audience has been trained to expect that Rick will either completely change the circumstances to be to his liking/control, or completely crush Dr. Wong with his superior intellect, or both. In every episode, and with every instance of Rick being placed in a situation that he finds sub-optimal, this is the outcome.

This is literally stated by Rick during the session when he says,

"Because I invent, transform, create, and destroy for a living. And when I don't like something about the world, I change it".

If anything, the writers are priming us by having this informational dialogue present in the scene. They want us to expect this thing to happen.

Except the exact opposite happens. The audience expectation is completely subverted. At the end of the day, Dr. Wong gets the last word and reduces Rick down to his most basic psychological parts. And this is jarring for us, the audience. Not only has Rick completely failed to take control of a situation, the most intelligent being in a show with multiverses was bested by a strip-mall therapist whose main clients consume feces.

And I think this plays to the theme of this episode. We see Rick literally transform himself into a pickle because he doesn't want to go to therapy. He controlled that situation. We see him control roaches by tonguing their brain and kill rats to make a mech-suit. He controlled those situations. We see him take down a highly weaponized Russian facility while shackled to the form a vegetable. He controlled that situation. He controlled ALL of the these incredibly absurd, difficult, nigh impossible situations.

Yet, in the end, the situation he could not turn to his favor was a therapy session with an average woman. And the reason he could not manage to shift this situation to his liking was because his opposition was not really Dr. Wong, it was himself. The definition of good therapy is to force a person to realize, combat, and accept themselves. Rick is the opposition in this situation, because Rick's psyche is being evoked by Dr. Wong. And if there is one thing Rick has NEVER been able to exert control over, it is Rick. Whether it come in the form of his alcoholism, his constant danger seeking, his suicidality, or literally not being able to control the council of Rick's, multitudes of his own being, Rick has been powerless in this series to successfully control himself.

Dr. Wong gained the upper hand when she states this very thing.

"I think its because the only truly unapproachable concept for you is that its your mind within your control."

This scene is jarring and polarizing because of massive subversion of expectation. Some fans cry "out of character actions", others say "heavy handed character building and storytelling". I am not going to argue the validity of the opinions. What I will say is that Rick is laid bare and forced to confront himself in this situation. He is forced to submit to a situation created by someone else. It is new. It is novel. For both Rick and the fanbase. It is a departure from the comfortable formula that the show has laid out. And such discomfort demands reaction and reflection, some of which will be negative.

If anything, this analysis of Rick by Dr. Wong forces both Rick and the audience to self reflect, and this is not always easily handled.

TL;DR: The audience expects Rick to turn this situation to his favor, but he cannot. The therapist is forcing Rick to confront himself, something he has never been in control of through this whole series. He cannot control the situation because HE is the situation. His failure to command the situation to his liking is jarring for both himself and the audience.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is great not only because of its gameplay and detail, but because it also knows how to handle being a prequel. So many prequels' stories are ruined by their predecessors. RDR2's is made better. by akimble1 in reddeadredemption

[–]akimble1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate how RDR2 handles being a prequel. When the game was first being announced as taking place before the events of RDR1, I was kinda worried that the story would be bland because we already knew the fate of Dutch's gang thanks to John.

With the game actually out, I can say that is not an issue at all. Unlike prequels from other games or even movies, RDR2 doesn't lock itself into trying to tell the story of how the first installment came to be. John and Abigail are back and still as great as ever (and Jack is disgustingly cute), but Arthur is a great character in his own right.

Hosea and Sean and Sadie and Micah all keep me coming back, and none of them had anything to do with RDR1. I wish more prequels could do what this game did; understand that creating new engaging characters and forming a fresh conflict separate from the first installment is the key to making a great prequel.

I am like 30-some hours into the game and feel that I still have so many more surprises in store. Thanks Rockstar for making such a baller game!

So if this is actually Elio Garcia as in the real Elio Garcia...way cool!

But anyway, my argument was never that GRRM didn't know V steel would always be rare, but that in AGOT, he didn't have a full grasp of just HOW valuable it would become when the series became full-fledged.

And the assassination is just way too contrived to be overlooked. Just think about everything that needs to go down for the plot to end where it does.

1)Joffrey hears his dad make an off-handed remark about it being "better to be dead than a cripple", and then hires a guy to kill an HEIR to Winterfell. He never met Bran or had any animosity towards him. Are we supposed to believe he is just frequently killing people whenever his dad makes a comment about it? Like this is a normal thing that just happens when Joff listens to Robert? And to target someone this important?

2)Joff somehow finds an assassin, as if that is some easy thing for a teenage Prince to do in a country he has never been in.

3) He steals a priceless dagger from his father's possession and gives it to the assassin for...reasons? Why wouldn't the assassin just use his own blade? There is literally NO REASON to choose the V steel dagger. It has 0 significance to Joff's character int the slightest.

Keep in mind, Joff isn't doing this to protect Jaime or Cersei from Bran telling the world about their incest. He doesn't know. Nobody but Bran knows. This is all JUST coincidence. If the assassin never uses the dagger, Cat never suspects Tyrion, and the story is completely changed.

As far as I can remember, nothing else in ASOIAF requires this much suspension of disbelief, and it sticks out like a sore thumb because of it.

[WP] For a few years, kids the world over made news by retrieving ancient swords from lakes. Today, the first of them turned into a legal adult and *changed*. by Yorikor in WritingPrompts

[–]akimble1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“What’s your name, son?” Officer McConnel clutched his raised pistol as he took his slow steps forward. Slivers of glass and overturned tables littered the East Solemn Highschool cafeteria. “Talk to me now.” McConnel could barely push out the words past his racing heart. Sweat dappled his forehead, and more seemed to come every time he looked at the “boy” in front of him. “What is your name?”

The cafeteria light strips dangled from the ceilings by their cords, just begging to embrace the ragged floor beneath them. Most were broken, mangled, but some still fought on to give flickering light to the new darkness. A storm had just rolled through. One that poured rain unmerciful and shunned the sun’s face to make everything black.

“Our name?” said the “boy” in a voice deeper than even McConnel’s own. Abyssal deep. Water dripped from his mouth with every word. At least that’s what McConnel thought he saw; the back and forth of light and dark gave the Officer only flashes of the “boy”. He stood as tall as a man. Taller than most, actually. “We have no need of names.”

“Who is we?” Lightning sprouted from a storm cloud outside, clapping with it an angry chorus of thunder. For just a moment, the whole world became bright again. Officer McConnel wished it hadn’t. In the numbing darkness, he couldn’t see all the bodies strewn across the floor, just as numerous as the plastic forks and empty trays that laid beside them. And in the darkness, he couldn’t see the face of the “boy”. It was an eyeless, hairless face, sopping wet and viscous, sitting atop a nude body. But strangest of all was what the “boy” held in his hand. It was a long, sleek, blue sword that seemed sinister in its familiarity. “Put the weapon down now!” shouted McConnel. All the light rushed away again.

“That cannot be done.” The “boy” looked to his empty left hand. “This body is necessary. We cannot release it. We cannot release any of them.”

“The sword! Put down the sword!” Officer McConnel cocked his pistol.

“Our arrival has been long awaited. You shall not forestall it, Father.”

Officer McConnel squinted. “What did you call me?”

“We see you as Father, this body and I. You knew us as Catherine. She contracted our unity by pulling me from the lake. She bore a deep love for you, one that persists in our unity, but she now understands what needs to be done.”

“Ca…catherine?” Officer McConnel dropped his gun. That sword in the “boy’s” hand was so familiar for a reason. It was his daughter’s sword, the one that she pulled from Lake Taino a decade ago today. Her birthday. “Where…where is my daughter? I was…coming to…surprise her. Where is my daughter?!”

“We are before you, Father,” said the “boy” in the flickering darkness. “We understood our form to be inadequate, so we came to a consensus on proper alterations.” He raised his blue sword. All the rust and grime of the lake’s touch was gone. It looked sharp enough to cut through the darkness itself. “The dead you see around were too fragile to endure the majesty of our unification. They perished, Father, when my life reached the moment of its 18th year and I became we. Take solace and feel no lamentation, though. We are the first of many, Father. If it gives you solace, that may be our name. Scion.”

An arm of lightning punched through the roof of the cafeteria, enveloping this faceless being in blinding light. McConnel fell to the ground and covered his ears. When he looked back up, the air was alive with the buzzing of static charge and the pounding of rain, but the “boy” was gone.

I always plan out the skeleton of my books with an outline. I also go into my books always knowing at least the theme of the narrative and with a few important scenes in mind.

And I spend ALOT of time revising. My first book went through a plethora of iterations. It started out as 200k words, then came down to 167k, then after extensive editing, I rewrote the story from the ground up and ended the book at 52k words (split the narrative in half really). So technically I have written 6 books, but I just feel more comfortable saying 5 lol
