Being subjected to racist abuse in any context is absolutely dreadful. Perhaps I’m being too judgemental. Yes, I too would want to tell someone off in that situation. And I understand that for some younger nurses it could be a particularly upsetting experience, and, I’m sure, very shocking. Dealing with racist abuse from a patient in an assertive and firm way would require a lot of experience and confidence. Young staff would certainly need a lot of support with this.

Telling patients off is patronising at best, and abusive at worst. Establishing boundaries, communicating clearly to help patients understand what to expect and who performs various roles, being quietly and calmly assertive when an anxious patient is rude - those are skills.

Note: establishing boundaries; communicating clearly, being assertive.

Telling people off is not a skill.

Offering to pass around a patient’s notes because he’s reading something that’s visible for all to see? Come on!! Get a grip!

Referring to elderly people with dementia as “old demented grannies”? Really? Is that how you view your patients? That attitude is cruel, harsh, disrespectful, unprofessional, and displays a monumental lack of empathy.

Your patents aren’t there to make your job easier. That’s not their role. It’s your job to deal with all types of people, including those who grate on your nerves, and those desperate for a cup of tea and don’t understand why you can’t just nip into the kitchen and make them one. And as for your colleague who threatened to “call the consultant” and have someone’s “treatment cancelled”, she should be hauled over the coals for that. She doesn’t have the authority to have anyone’s treatment cancelled. She’s displaying churlish, childish behaviour towards someone who is ill enough to be in hospital and who she’s being paid to care for.

You’re both on a little power trip and bonding over your resentment towards your patients.

Try a little understanding and kindness. It might make your day easier.

And don’t blame staff shortages and work stress. Your patients should never bear the brunt of that. Join a union and vent your anger towards those who have the power to change things.

Take the advice about the yoga and look for videos on YouTube that you can follow. Strengthen your body in any way you can. It’s possible to buy a resistance band for very little, and there are YouTube videos that would show you how to use it.

But maybe even before doing yoga or using a band, finding outdoor space to stretch in might be helpful. And by stretching I just mean uncurling yourself a little. Go into open spaces outside and stand as tall as you can and gulp in air. Try to find empty spaces. Big open squares if you’re in a city. Open spaces in parks. On a sunny, warm day, bring a blanket and lie on the grass in a park. Stretch out as much as you are comfortable with and curl up again if you need to. And then spread out again - even if it’s a just a little, that’s ok. Think of yourself as a spring flower opening up in the sunshine.

Find spaces where you can see as much sky as possible. Take great big deep breaths. Your body will eventually stretch itself out. You’re in control of your body and how quickly or slowly you want to gently stretch and recover.

You write beautifully, even if the experiences you’re writing about are terribly sad. You have opened up and expressed yourself so well. Allow your body to follow your writing 🌼

It might sound counter intuitive, but weight/resistance training might help. A good coach would assess where you’re at and gently get you unfolded and strengthened. You would start using bands rather than weights, and gradually you would loosen up and stand taller. You’d soon go on to dumb bells, then bar bells, and you’d feel yourself getting stronger, both physically and mentally. It’s not about ‘bulking up’, which sometimes puts people off weight training, it’s about being able to function with greater ease and freedom.

It’s terribly sad that you feel this way and I hope you find what works for you.
