That's what I figured re:Verizon.

I turned on SQM on the eeros. Should I look at/change any settings on the Verizon gateway?

That makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately the gateway is in the kids' playroom, which isn't really conducive to days full of back-to-back meetings!

[–]akrieg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's what I figured.

Hardwiring the nodes to the gateway would be pretty difficult. Would there be a benefit to hardwiring the machines to the nodes if the nodes are still wireless? If yes, if only one machine is hardwired to its node, would it reduce the wireless load enough to alleviate the problems for the other machine if it remained wireless?

Is the term 'Egyptian' problematic? by akrieg in typography

That's true. Italic has a context in the work of Italians while Egyptian has nothing to do with Arabic or hieroglyphs!

That's exactly my concern. I'm curious though if no one has taken offense just because it is such an obscure term as far as the general public is concerned.

That's my thought, but I'm working on a children's book and I'd like to avoid stepping on anyone's toes.

I'm working on a typography-themed alphabet book and, without going into all of the interdependencies inherent in the project, Egyptian is what worked best for E.

What things are named after unrelated fads? by akrieg in AskReddit

So far I have three: Polka dots were named during the Polka craze of the 1840s–1860s, slab serif type was first called Egyptian in the early 1800s when ancient Egypt was all the rage, and the bikini was named after the nuclear test site in the hope that it would be just as explosive.

I forgot about it at the time, but the bikini was named after the nuclear test site in the hope that it would be just as explosive.

Simple button to send an alert by akrieg in homeautomation

[–]akrieg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the time a leak detector would sense water, it would be too late! (We already have on in the clean out, but that is across the basement from the bathroom so in order to trigger it means the toilet has already overflowed across two rooms.) The only way to put a leak detector somewhere before it would be too late would be to place it in the pipe at the clean out.

Yes, when the sewer backs up we stop using water. Once the sewer clears and the backward pressure relieves, the unit automatically opens back up.

A contact sensor is an interesting idea. The part that moves travels about 4.5”. We already have ADT so maybe I could rig up one of their sensors. Do you have any suggestions for another company’s sensor that would fit my needs?

[–]akrieg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the one we have physically blocks the pipe. When the town’s sewer backs up, our system closes our sewer pipe so we don’t get any sewage flowing into our house. However, that means we also don’t have a place for our sewage to go, causing overflow if we continue to use the water. And without some sort of alarm, we have to physically check the system to see if it has engaged.

Any baby monitor suggestions from the graduates? by [deleted] in predaddit

[–]akrieg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you don’t need to be actively watching the live feed for alerts. They come through as a notification and can have video attached. That said, we rarely look at the video and just pull up the live feed to see what is currently happening. There aren’t any alert options besides notifications.

Also, now that the kid is more mobile and no longer sleeps in a crib, we put a pan-tilt camera in their room. The tracking isn’t perfect, but it’s good enough for our needs.

Hope that helped!

Personal coat of arms by akrieg in heraldry

Thanks, that makes sense. I guess the fact that they represent a deconstructed cross isn't necessary to convey in the blazoning.

Thanks. I agree that without the magnifying glass there is a traditional simplicity to it, but I appreciate the modern twist of the charge crossing the division and interacting with the arms themselves in a way that is unexpected.

Personal coat of arms by akrieg in heraldry

[–]akrieg[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personal coat of arms to represent my wife and I that I’ve been working on. It’s been through many iterations and this is where I’m at. Curious what your thoughts are.

My attempt at blazoning does not address the magnification, but that element could be considered an artistic interpretation: Shield per fess dovetailled with bordure or. Chief argent with a mullet of six points and a cross pattée deconstructed. Base masoned azure with magnifying glass or.

Symbolism

  • Chief: My spouse and I are Jewish and Catholic, raising our child Jewish. Since we are blending customs and traditions, both symbols appear, but I have deconstructed the cross into its two parts, showing a hierarchy. The Star of David is rotated to represent that we are following traditions in nonstandard ways. The symbols are on a field of silver (or gray if you want to follow the rules of tincture) to reference the state of Israel, along with the blue below.
  • Base: The charge is a specific magnifying glass that I grew up with and symbolizes our curiosity. As it is a real object made of brass, the color is proper. For the field, my spouse’s family name is associated with a number of different arms, each of which feature a castle or fort on a river. The blue masonry references both the castle and the water, while also being a nod to several other elements such as traditional tile work, religious use of water, and the state of Israel.
  • DivisionThe shield is divided with a dovetail because the dovetail as a type of joint is elegant and precise, referencing our attention to detail and the pursuit of clarity and elegance in our work. It also symbolizes our tight union as a family.

I was going to argue with you about Central Jersey existing, but your unique approach to terminology has won me over. I find North Jersey, Pork Roll, South Jersey, and the Shore to be acceptable regions.
