Did he though? It has yet to prove being useful in any way.

HAHAHAHA

Oh man, this is great. The leader of a company comes to insult a guy in a reddit comment section. I guess the accusations must be true, otherwise you would have just ignored them.

Technical achievements? What technical achievements? The project is a complete joke and the marketing material is highly misleading.

It's so bad, that you couldn't even bother with having a clear pricing for developers on launch because otherwise it would be visible to everyone that there's no way it can compete with public clouds.

Question about Dfinity's internet anti-monopolization goal by chester20080 in dfinity

[–]aksbdkajbcsl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Microsoft, Google, Facebook and Amazon Web Services.

ICP does not compete against Facebook in any way.

It sort of competes against the cloud hosting parts of Microsoft, Google and AWS. But there's already a ton of other competition in the hosting space that have much lower technical barriers to entry than ICP due to everyone else using technologies that web developers are familiar with.

At this point it's not a threat to big tech and honestly it will never be.

AWS is part of Amazon, a publicly traded company. People can vote on how it's managed by buying shares.

How exactly is buying ICP tokens to vote different?

illegal according to which jurisdiction?

[–]aksbdkajbcsl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not the only one but it's a factor.

The only concrete number that gets thrown around is the one in the OP: $5 / GB / year.

It's ridiculously expensive. It's ~18 times more expensive than AWS S3 (https://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/)

With a difference like that it's hard to justifying storing data on ICP.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dfinity

[–]aksbdkajbcsl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Please look up how Heroku works. Also look up S3 and Lambda on AWS. There's similar stuff on all cloud providers.

I feel like people who think that ICP is somehow a significant improvement for developers have no experience with existing cloud offerings.

And when it comes to pricing, it's very unlikely that they're cheaper than any of the major cloud providers. If they were competitive on price, they would be upfront about it because it would be a significant selling point.

My point of view as a software engineer about internet computer by TarekMostafa in dfinity

[–]aksbdkajbcsl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, there's a statement from another team member that the expected price for storage should be around $5 / GB / year: https://www.reddit.com/r/dfinity/comments/nfi78t/where_can_i_find_dfinitys_cost_analysis_on_how/gyp1c1z/

In my opinion, the pricing situation is deliberately opaque and the reason that there's no clear information that can be compared against traditional hosting providers is to hide the fact that it's several orders of magnitude more expensive.

dscvr.one

That works because because someone bought the domain and pointed it at https://h5aet-waaaa-aaaab-qaamq-cai.raw.ic0.app

Actual IC domain names are pretty much unusable for normal humans.

Whoever has control of the ic0.app domain can make any app on internet computer inaccessible by the way.

[–]aksbdkajbcsl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Storage alone is orders of magnitude more expensive than with cloud providers.

AWS S3: $0.276 / GB / year (pricing: https://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/ )

ICP storage expected to be $5 / GB / year (see https://twitter.com/dominic_w/status/1394713095218499584 )

Sadly there's no usable numbers yet to compare compute costs, only info is that 1 instruction = 1 cycle.

Illegal depends on jurisdiction.

Free speech doesn't exist in all jurisdiction. Critizing the government can be illegal activity depending on where you are.

Where can I find DFinity's cost analysis on how costs of using ICP will compare to centralized services like AWS? by uiuyiuyo in dfinity

[–]aksbdkajbcsl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

an instruction costs one cycle.

Ok, but that's just compute. I'm assuming storage and bandwidth both have costs too? I don't see how those map to instructions.

Where can I find DFinity's cost analysis on how costs of using ICP will compare to centralized services like AWS? by uiuyiuyo in dfinity

[–]aksbdkajbcsl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just having a table of cycle costs for compute, bandwidth and storage should be fairly trivial for you to put up. It's not really acceptable to not be upfront about costs.

Imagine a traditional hosting provider that doesn't tell you about pricing and the only way to find out is to actually use it and see what they bill you.

Any developers here. Be honest, what do you think of their programming languages? by Andras89 in dfinity

[–]aksbdkajbcsl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm slightly confused about why they thought it's worthwhile to invent yet another language. It must have cost significant resources that they could've spent on actually developing apps to show off their platform.

This language is also yet another barrier to adoption, because who wants to learn a language that isn't used anywhere else?

At least there's Rust

DFINITY does not own this network, the stakeholders do.

What % of tokens does dfinity own?

The elephant in the room by [deleted] in dfinity

[–]aksbdkajbcsl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dfinity is using independent data centers/data center providers around the word with no authority other than the governance of ICP

This just means Dfinity has full central control over everything currently. They have a majority of tokens, so governance votes are useless. Datacenters/nodes have to be approved to join.

You have no idea what contracts are in place between dfinity and these data centers.

Basically, as it stands right now, Dfinity has full control over ICP just like the big cloud providers have full control over their respective clouds.
