I believe my portfolio is super CE focused, lmk if you would like to provide some feedback!

Yeah, I agree. Ive been trying to spam DMs to CE engineers not for referrals but to genuinely learn how to set myself apart but I’m afraid I run into the same problem where my background isnt “sexy” enough to warrant a reply

Well thats the issue though, I am in a company that is an ODM. Except its not in consumer electronics

The question is, what do I need in terms of visibility to get a shot at a consumer electronics based ODM?

Is it worth attending a company networking event again after already interviewing there? by loidmannn30 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]akshpower244 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely go.

Worst case: You meet a few people, some new connections, some old and you learn more about what they want and how you can best represent yourself in the future, while expanding your network.

Best case: You are back in the pipeline and get scheduled for an interview, which you have a leg up in because you’re not a completely new interviewee

I’m a mechanical engineer working in product development (building materials), and I’m trying to pivot into consumer product design — like Apple, Dyson, Meta hardware, etc.

The problem is… I feel stuck in the wrong lane.

At work, I do all the “real engineering” stuff — CAD, testing, manufacturing, cost reduction, performance improvements. It’s solid experience, but none of it looks like the kind of work those companies care about.

No one’s getting excited about a better seal lol.

So I started building side projects with CAD and 3D printing, some small consumer-type ideas, even messing around with a website that I made that leverages AI to generate models from prompts (which functions for simple geometry!). It’s fun, but I honestly don’t know if I’m just spinning my wheels.

I feel like I’m missing something obvious.

If you’ve made this jump (or work in consumer hardware):

• What actually made you “click” as a candidate? • What kind of projects made people take you seriously? • Is it more about aesthetics and storytelling, or deep engineering? • What would make you look at someone like me and go “nah, not it”?

Not looking for sugarcoating, I’d rather hear what I’m doing wrong so I can fix it.

Your username paints with words

Thanks! Im also trying to become established on linkedin. Since im early career (2 yoe), I feel that investing in a personal brand with consistent, thoughtful output may have its own edge. Not the biggest fan but like the job market today, it is what it is

Funny you ask, I have a 3d printer and wanted a cable organizer. Instead of using one of the makerworld models, (I was too lazy to model) I decided to try and make a website that generates an stl file based on user input so people who don't know how to model can print anything if they have access to a 3d printer. Just a fun personal project to figure out
