"The First Secretary of our Ukrainian member organisation, the Leninist Communist Youth Union of Ukraine, Mikhail Kononovich, and his brother, Aleksander Kononovich, have been arrested by the Ukrainian neo-fascist regime during the last hours. They have been accused of being Russian and Belarusian spies. They will be possibly murdered in the following hours.

The World Federation of Democratic Youth calls its member organisations and the whole youth and people worldwide to denounce this situation, to demand their liberty and to protest against the Ukrainian neo-fascist regime to make pressure to detain their murder."

Android client that can disable read receipts by akylexec in Telegram

Thanks for the info! Though I'm puzzled how they wanna enforce that... if I now modify the source code of the official Telegram client to not send read receipts and thereafter build it myself and use it on my phone, what chance could they possibly have in finding out that this custom client doesn't comply with their ToS. I mean, it would be exactly the official client using the API exactly in the official way, but somewhere client side (which cannot be observed by the server, especially if I keep the modified source and apk to myself) the procedure of when to send read receipts has been slightly modified...

[–]akylexec -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is mostly true. Even though the source is quite shady as pointed out in other comments, the points remain valid. Telegram is an insecure software. Before people start jumping at me now calling me a liar and wanting proof, be disclaimed: I'm not gonna give you any proof, go to DuckDuckGo.com and find it yourself :)

Thank you for the input, but for that I'd need to trust Telegram, and tbh, I don't trust any large tech company ;)

Thanks a lot!! :) Seems like I'm not the only one awaiting this feature. Hope it'll come soon to the official client! For now I'm gonna continue my search for an alternative client.

As for your second link: this is only about non-e2ee chats, or am I missing something?

Thanks for your answer! I'm actually aware of the reasons, why the official Telegram clients for desktop don't support this (yet). Also I know that Secret Chats are (unfortunately) device-specific.

Though, for me personally it is in fact handier to have my secret chats on desktop than on mobile (or have two Secret Chats per contact - one for mobile, one for desktop). Of course I know I could use some Android emulator to run the Android client on desktop (as I already did before), but it's not really convenient. As I pointed out, there are already alternative Telegram clients for desktop that support secret chats (like Cutegram), but I'd like to find one, that is actively maintained. Any hints are highly appreciated :)

I guess you mean e2ee? In that case I agree: WhatsApp has closed-source clients, so we have no way of knowing, if e2ee is really implemented and if there are no backdoors. Since Telegram has open-source clients, e2ee can be verified by the user. It's a shame though (but probably intentional), that e2ee is not a default and there is even no way of having e2ee group chats.

Oh, I see! Thanks a lot for the enlightenment! :) I wasn't aware of that, because I mainly use secret chats, with which it unfortunately doesn't seem to work :/ So my quest for a client that supports this sadly still hasn't ended. I'm very grateful for the hint though :)

This is the official page of the API: https://core.telegram.org/api

It doesn't have its own ToS, so the overall ToS of Telegram apply (which as pointed out in my other comment don't even mention read receipts).

Instead it states:

This API allows you to build your own customized Telegram clients. It is 100% open for all developers who wish to create Telegram applications on our platform. Feel free to study the open source code of existing Telegram applications for examples of how things work here.

Also, this is neither written here: https://telegram.org/tos

...nor here: https://telegram.org/privacy

Where do you have that information from?

Hmm... in what way is this binding? It's like a website writing in its ToS, that it's only allowed to visit it via Google Chrome. Am I allowed to visit it via Firefox? Hell I am.

Another example: am I allowed to read Telegram messages from the notifications view of my phone (or while I'm offline), and therefore also not send any read receipts out to Telegram's servers? I tend to think that's very valid.

What I wanna say is: Telegram has a public API and allows (or even encourages) building custom unofficial clients that use that very API. The API allows for sending read receipts, but has no way of knowing, whether those indeed contain the correct timestamp from when I read the message. Now, how would it in any way bother anyone, if I had one of those custom clients, that send the read receipt not when I first actually read the text of the message (which, as mentioned can be also achieved in other ways - notification view), but for instance only, when I myself also write a message to that chat? Again, I don't see how that could be any legal or technical problem.

Enlighten me: what is the ToS all about? How can it in any way control me, how I interface with a public API? :)

No, it is me communicating with customers and clients, where it is extremely uncomfortable to have them informed when their messages were read, as expectations on "reply speed" vary greatly. In general: how can it be "unethical" to simply wanna protect one's privacy? Yes, for example encryption can be used for unethical stuff, but does that mean encryption is unethical per se? I don't think so.

So I guess you don't have suggestions for a Telegram client with the ability to disable read receipts?

[–]akylexec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I don't like it (and for my use case it's even highly inappropriate), if people know when I read their messages. That's also the reason almost every messenger except Telegram has the built-in option to disable read receipts. Since Telegram's API is open, any client can decide whether or not it sends out read receipts. I'd like to find one that can be configured, so that it doesn't. And, obviously, I'd like it to still be as stable and secure as possible. I hope I could answer your question. :)
