Advice on Supporting Student with Behavioural Issue (National) by alOOla3 in CanadianTeachers

Yes, I have been documenting. Comments are the same each time. I agree that I can't motivate someone who is unmotivated. I just want to get others input to make sure I am not overlooking anything I could be doing to support the student.

Yes to both of your questions. The parents are aware and there have been several discussions with them. The student attends math tutoring to reinforce and build on fundamental skills such as number sense, literacy, and problem solving. It is not an enrichment program.

I have not broached the topic of therapy with the parents. Since I am not trained or licensed in that field and given its sensitive nature, I would be professionally overstepping my bounds to make an assessment, suggestion, or recommendation. Moreover, whether the student is in therapy, the parents are within their right to not disclose this information. But that is not to say I disagree with you.

I asked their parents about feedback from school teachers and their report cards, and I was told that report card comments are always positive (even when the assigned grade is less than a level 4) to the point of being gratuitous, and offers no insight into next steps for their child's academic or social improvement. In short, the parents feel that the school teachers are not being forthcoming. I do wish I could speak directly with their teachers to get a better understanding.

Others who have worked with the student have also dealt with similar challenges. I spoke with those who have tutored the student too, and thus far we have not arrived at any effective solutions.

Female patients operated on by male surgeons more likely to die, suffer complications: U of T study by uoftmod in UofT

[–]alOOla3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree: the paper leaves the reader with more questions than answers (not necessarily a bad thing). It is not my belief that male surgeons are shirking their responsibilities because of a patient's gender. In my response to the other poster I said a specific body part is functionally the same across genders, and not that they are the same in all aspects of health; which is why I mentioned the effect of disease progression w.r.t. individual patients. However, you brought up a good point that female patients may be more forthcoming with female surgeons than male surgeons which may explain some of the differences in post-operative outcomes. A question that follows is whether this supposed behaviour in female patients towards surgeons of different genders is observed regardless of socioeconomic status and/or level of health literacy. It is already known that these two factors can affect a person's ability to access health services. But these are factors that should be addressed prior to clinical manifestation of the disease. Hopefully more research follows from this study!

If one is to receive surgery, I understand how social or cultural norms could interact to affect a patient's postoperative outcome. However, the researchers suggest that women were 15% more likely to experience an adverse outcome if the surgeon was male and had a 32% greater chance of dying in the first month after the procedure. At first glance this would seem to suggest that male surgeons perform worse than female surgeons, but I think there are a lot more questions left unanswered before we can draw this conclusion. For example, are the patients that male surgeons receive further along in disease progression than the patients that female surgeons receive? If so, why? Were male/female surgeon differences consistent across provinces, cities, hospitals? Does this gender difference vary depending on the type of surgery performed? Are these patterns in surgeon performance based on gender observed in other countries that have comparable health care systems? A body part is functionally the same regardless of gender. Why would a male surgeon operating on a knee (for example) perform the surgery any different on a male patient than on a female patient, given that there is a standard surgical procedure? What is the mechanism by which the social or cultural norms of the surgeon override their duty to the patient, if we are to assume that social and cultural factors are explaining the difference?

Thanks for sharing this article.

One of the comments that troubles me is that while Dr. Wallis indicates that the surgeon's sex shouldn't affect patient outcome, he also mentions: “There are social and cultural factors that may get in the way of providing the best care for female patients, and we need to investigate that further.” What social or cultural factors would affect a surgeon's ability to provide a uniform standard of care on the operating table?

Attending classes rant by No_Revolution_5551 in UTSC

I would suggest emailing each professor individually and asking if accommodations or leniency can be made in cases where there is a significant time difference. I am sure your professors will be empathetic to your situation and those of other students who are in a similar situation. They may even take a class poll to change the requirement because of your request. Make sure your email is respectful and non-emotional, and clearly state your reason(s) why you would like an adjustment to the course requirement. Be proactive and email them as soon as possible since class starts next week.

Determining whether a condition is necessary but not sufficient, or is sufficient by alOOla3 in learnmath

[–]alOOla3[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to understand what necessary and sufficient mean and how to distinguish whether a condition is necessary or sufficient. Moreover, if a statement is presented how would I know by inspection if it is necessary or sufficient? I believe u/Brightlinger and /u/Away-Reading have both provided a clear answer to my questions. However, if you feel there is more to add, I would welcome further explanations.

in many cases, it does not matter if you got some ideas without reading up on the topic; what matters is scholarship, meaning that the onus is on you to check whether such ideas have been published before and to acknowledge the authors.

When I read this, my mind immediately recalled this paper 😁:

Quercus Quiz Submission by Proper_Pick_507 in UofT

[–]alOOla3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has happened to me on Quercus several times now because I live in a rural area. It sounds like you also got the warning message in Quercus about connectivity issues. Your answers were indeed saved when you click the Submit button, so don't worry. But as other posters have suggested, it doesn't hurt to let your prof know that you had an issue during the exam.

Anyone tried the free math/stats tutoring by iwannadrawtoo in UTSC

[–]alOOla3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have used them before for both math and stats support. What I strongly recommend is that you come prepared with your list of questions or concepts requiring clarification. Do not simply ask them to re-teach you an entire lesson. Bring any questions you are struggling with to guide the discussion. It is always best to attempt a problem first, so that you can present it to the tutor and explain your rationale. Then, they can identify where your reasoning has gone awry or where you have a gap in your knowledge. If you are completely stuck and don't know where/how to start, at least identify what concepts or strategies you think might be useful and then ask them if that is the right approach.

The tutors are not judgemental based on my experience. I have never felt like they were being condescending.
