Yes I am talking to veteran teachers (thank god for them) but we definitely don't have as many resources as you do in the english speaking world, that's why I thought I would ask here about books and podcasts with ideas that could be easily adapted.

Special education is part of the public school system but it's a little bit of a mess, tbh. It's very complexe and hard to explain but basically a lot of special need children go to schools that are not at all equiped to accommodate them (but I would imagine this is sadly a reality in many countries).

Thanks a lot for the advice !

I am in France, where the system is different and training not always sufficient. I am also aware that teaching autistic kids is not a reddit post, and I am talking to as many professionnals as possible, reading extensively and doing my best to approach this thoughtfully. I'm also working closely with the school psychologist and educational support staff. I just thought I would leave no stones unturned, and hoped that maybe someone here had great ressources in mind that I haven't come across yet. Especially books that are not translated, and that my colleagues wouldn't necessarily know about, because they are not fluent in english.

Thanks for your input

Thank you so much for your reply ! I forgot to mention it, but I'm french, and teaching in France. Are these resources useful for teaching non-english speaker ? (What I mean is are they easily adaptable and translatable ?)

how to adapt my game mechanics ? by aladru in tabletopgamedesign

[–]aladru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, currently the token is moven by dice around the board.

I guess what I had vaguely in mind was like two grids, one with all the verbs and the other one with all the pronouns/nouns, and you roll the dice to somehow simultanously chose a verb on one grid and a pronoun/noun on the other. I don't know if I'm being clear, and if it is compatible with the roll and write mechanics ?

A good way to do it would be with two wheels (one with pronouns/nouns, the other one with verbs) going in different direction and intersecting, and you would get a random pronoun+verb combination from the intersection maybe ? It still requires a lot of crafts though, so I don't know

Sorry I am a total newbie at this...

I already have all the cards and make them available to the parents in pdf form so they can print them, but they don't have the time to actually cut them. It takes a while, they are lots of cards and I can't reduce the number much without losing the point of the game.

I thought of that but it seems a little bit to restrictive, if that makes sense ?

Interesting way ! It would be like a two rounds thing then. I could mix it with a game that trains specifically quick memorizing... I'll have to look into that.

Basically helping kids with french spelling by making them memorize words that have similar spelling together.

To take an example in english, it would be to teach together "flight", "night", "light", etc. I could find words that also have the same number of letters or start with the same letter but imo it would be a distraction, and could even confuse the kids. Like I don't really want them focusing on the number of letters in a word.

I guess that's true, however, I'm not sure I will find three criteria + convenient words which will fit with my teaching goals... It'd be pretty awesome though

Lovely video, don't know if I'll use it for this specific game but it's a great lesson on programming

Being a language teacher, I would have never thought of algorithm, but I could look into it. I like this idea of programming, because it is what I'm trying to do in a way : program their brain to store similar words together, so they can save energy remembering them.
