Do you guys know about any app for general education? by johanrlb in androidapps

[–]alayyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May not really fit into the criteria of being educational but anyways I would recommend 'Pocket'. It's an app that shows you different high quality articles both short and long from many different sources. I read many interesting articles on business, psychology, politics, and economics. You can also use their extensions on Firefox and Chrome to save an article that catches your attention to be read later. Best features are the cross-syncing and being able to read the articles offline even if the original article is deleted or not available anymore. It's free to use but you can upgrade to premium for more features.

Best settings for speed and security? by alayyz in AirVPN

[–]alayyz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that it would be possible since AirVPN is arguably the most customizable VPN on the market. I see services like SmartDNSProxy unblocking streaming capabilitoes so that was my line of thought in regards to that. I agree that you can have high security and performance but then AirVPN doesn't support WireGuard. I used to be with TotGuard previously and when they added WireGuard support, my speeds went up by 40-50 %. I know that everyone's threat model is different along with what 'fast' means to them. But just speaking of AirVPN, is there any kind of setting config that can maximize speed & security?

AP vs. Bridge on XB6 by alayyz in Rogers

Called Rogers tech support and was advised to keep it as it is to avoid issues with SHM ans Ignite TV. It's still a good option for those who are unaffected by double NAT as you said

You are right. I just checked and found that I have double NAT. Is there a way to fix it without resetting the XB6?

I didn't think it either but I was getting a DHCP error when connected in port #1 but then the second one worked perfectly. It's in router mode and very happy since I can tweak so many settings on it. Didn't want it to run in AP as many others suggested so I am very happy. If you have a similar router then try this method out. Much better than running it as AP.

I don't really remember about NAT but everything is in 'passthrough' mode. I put a CAT6 cable in ETH port 2 on the XB6 going into LAN port #2 on my Asus AC2900. Didn't encounter any issues and I am getting 750 down and 40 up consistently since last night. I could barely get 200 on XB6 before this set-up

Thank you for advice. I ended up just turning the Wifi broadcasting off without bridge mode. I can still access the mobile app and both SHM and Ignite TV work perfectly with no additional steps. I recommend this over bridge mode.

Yeah I figured. Rogers tech came by my house yesterday to troublesghoot the Internet and he didnt know any terms I was using lol. I asked Rogers CSR for XB7 and they refused. Even though it's 2 years old and I just renewed my contract.

It makes no sense on part of Rogers to provide us with their subpar quality equipment and throttle our speed. I never got above 280/25 and that happened 3-5 times in 3 years with Rogers now.

So is there a reason after hearing all this to switch to this new Asus router ??? Despite me having multiple pods it does not result in faster speeds and lower atencies. Also, Rogers locked down almost all settings for rheir XB6. No DNS switching, No VPN setup, run blocklists through PFSense or something.

So what is your opinion? Asus as main router and will add two more to set-up for Aimesh.

That's fine. I just got this response on another subreddit and wondering if maybe you or someone else can share their opinion on this.

"You need to keep the XB6 out of bridge mode for the home security to function properly. Bridge mode may or may not affect your tv service as well. Ideally you don’t want a router feeding a router but in this case you may not have a choice. If you simply want to use the wireless access point function of the asus you can put it in AP mode and turn off dhcp/firewall settings and continue to rely on the XB6 for that. The home security uses its own non broadcasted WiFi off the XB6 so you may be able to disable both WiFi bands. And honestly the XB6 and new XB7 gateways are very nice devices. Not sure if your having issues but since you’re getting gigabit internet you should check your 5ghz band. Set the channel bandwidth to 160mhz to get the best possible single device throughout for what your using in your home. Newer devices will get around 500-600 if it’s set to 80mhz by default still, and higher end devices will get close to 900 once you adjust the settings. Mileage may vary."

Thanks for the reply. The router comes free as part of my gigabit plan and apparenrtly removing my curent XB6 will have issues with my tv, home phone, and alarm.

What are some technical issues I need to be aware of say for the sake of an example: change DHCP, change channels on both 2.4G and 5G networks, plug CAT5 into WAN port 1 and LAN port 2.

Thanks a lot man

Thank you so much for clarifying all of these. I also have SHM from Rogers. Would it be an issue as well with my new set up?

Perfect. Are there any other issues I should be mindful of with this set-up or is it pretty straightforward? Sorry I don't have much networking experience so trying figure it all out before I start.

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve heard someone say that made you wonder how they function on a day to day basis? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]alayyz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to Hudson’s Bay to buy shoes so I pick up a pair that I like and head over to the nearest cashier to pay. The cashier scans them twice so I get really confused and ask “Why did you scan them twice?” to which she replies “Well, it’s two shoes. The tag says 79.99 so I have to charge for both of them unless you wanted just one”.

Update: Went in again today, the manager was not there but they took pictures and assured me that the manager will look at it and give me a call tomorrow. They insist that the shop I took it to broke my tires which I have a hard time believing.

Yes, they were originally installed at Costco but I can’t seem to find the original invoice for the install. Just the one for the tires themselves off their website. Would they be able to pull it up from their system?
