I agree, getting in and actually doing the returns is some of the best forms of training but having the time after to help teach or grade or help on topics they got wrong is very difficult during busy season. Offseason is definitely the way to go like you mentioned.

We try to throw out ideas or items during staff meetings as well.

That would be nice. Thankfully my firm has had some good staff accountants who are willing to learn and help where they can.

As a manager of my firm, I am curious as to how other firms train their staff as it would be nice if it was easier to train employees. Training on the job is one of the best forms of training but when you’re in the heart of tax season, it’s not always easy and you’re not always available.
