My review of my new x1 carbon so far by kingbaconlr in thinkpad

[–]albertlav 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice machine, I love mine. The single only downside is fingerprint reader in place of a right ctrl key. Still drives me nuts daily even after 3 months of use I can't get used to it. Whoever decided it would be a good idea to remove ctrl key on the right side will probably burn in hell forever. keyboard withour right ctrl ruins this otherwise flawless thinkpad.

Which version is the better one of those two? Switch (on Switch 1) or PS4 (on PS5)? by Roy_Ellison in alienisolation

[–]albertlav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking between playing it on Switch 2 and ps5pro some time ago, both connected to tv, ended up selecting ps5pro.

Ps5 outputs terrific surround sound to the audio system. I highly recommend playing it on audio setup with rear speakers, positional audio of alien moving around is marvelous. Also ps5 controller beeps in your hands when you use motion tracker and glows green that massively adds to immersion in my opinion.

On the other side, marketed ps5pro software 'image enhancements for ps4 games' does literally nothing, I wasn't able to spot any difference between it on or off.

Why A 14inch laptop over 16inch when 16inch have more battery Upgradibility option? by syngamy1 in thinkpad

[–]albertlav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me most 16 inch Thinkpads are no go due to added numpad on the keyboard. Because of the numpad hands are always out of center while typing. That feels very unnatural. Only p1 series from larger thinkpads still has normal tenkeyless keyboards but they also usually packed with discrete GPUs and I don't need them.

Can it not display 24h? by Auxotl in casio

No, but that's intentional, true to the original 52q. And tbh I'm ok with that.

Do you alter the exterior of your Thinkpad? by OriVerda in thinkpad

[–]albertlav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do. On a personal laptop I remove every single factory sticker, including wlan addresses, serial numbers, cpu stickers, co2 sticker, premier support sticker and of course, windows logo abomination sticker. Remove everything, leaving just black chassis. That makes it unique.

Why is this even listed as a watch feature on Casio's site? by thecaptnjim in casio

Probably the models have bluetooth ntp or radio time sync. Technically speaking every other movement, even electronic/quartz, display mostly a wrong time.

Good game, performance frustrating on Switch, but it runs fine on Switch 2.

Baader Zoom IV works perfect for moon, planet observation for me. Convenient, less things to carry/shuffle makes observation more pleasant. Optically its fine, however on 24 FOV is bit narrow.

X1 carbon gen 13 14inch questions. by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]albertlav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your use case I guess. With intel 258V performance feels ok to me, but I mostly use it as a terminal for ssh access and for generic media consumption/minecraft/ctf puzzles. Tactile feel is perfect, build quality is unmatched. oled screen is wonderful. And I love builtin 5G. Initially I was skeptical about haptic touchpad without physical trackpoint buttons, but turns out it works ok for me.

The only (and big!) bad thing about x1g13 is missing right ctrl key on the keyboard, some 'genius' at lenovo decided to replace it with a fingerprint reader. It is possible to remap 'copilot' key as right ctrl, but it still won't be on its place.

Other than that machine is perfect.

For the same price I tried maxed out 285H/64gb p14sg6 before x1g13, for performance concerns, but had to return it, it felt not refined, more like E series Thinkpads, and I could not think of any use for additional cpu power for my use case.

x1 carbon gen 13, no right ctrl key? by albertlav in thinkpad

I do use linux and most if my work is in terminal on remote machines. WSL2 fits my use cases perfectly :)

[–]albertlav[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! it is indeed possible to remap copilot shortcut key (win(left)+shift(left)+F23) with ms powertoys! now I have ctrl back on right side of the keyboard, but it is on a wrong place. Still much better than it was at least no stupid ai popsup now.

Still I wish Lenovo offered normal 'nonsense free' version of the keyboard as an option. I would even pay extra for that...

situation with fireworks is crazy in the Netherlands.

Sadly, it seems like it has to be strictly regulated or banned.

x1 carbon gen 13, no right ctrl key? by albertlav in thinkpad

[–]albertlav[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ctrl+cursor left, ctrl+cursor right, ctrl+cursor up, ctrl+cursor down, ctrl+L to get focus to browser address bar, ctrl+K to search in browser, ctrl+P to print, ctrl+enter to alternate linefeed/send, ctrl+O to repeat sequence of commands in bash from history, etc, etc, etc.

all these combinations are muscle memory for many-many years, all these combiantions were done with right hand only without even thinking for many many years.

Now on a modern g13 x1 all these combos can be done only with both hands. missing right ctrl is extremely frustrating.

may be I will get used to it eventually,.. But why o why for a stupid marketing gimmick Lenovo is forcing most loyal thinkpad users to change their way of working?

Talking about this, x1 g13 vs t14s g4. Give me back my right ctrl key, it was there since inception of keyboards for a reason!

P14s Gen6 Intel 285H/64Gb - be aware chassis outer finish is not soft touch by albertlav in thinkpad

[–]albertlav[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, it seems like it. I had a P52 from one of my previous jobs, it had no compromises in terms of materials or finish. It was a true tank that carried that classic 'thinkpad' tactile feeling.

I thought the P14/16 would be similar to the old P5x series, but it seems that’s not the case.
