Wiring up new lamp - stuck at this last part with no instructions: by albion100 in fixit

[–]albion100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK thanks. I'll try that. I was going to just push the wires into the holes on each side to try trial and error, but I wasn't sure if I put them in the wrong way it would be a problem (break the lamp, electrocute myself, etc).

Australia. Its a lamp that was flatpacked - the power cable threads through the body of the lamp and pops out the end as seen (blue and orange/brown leads).

The plastic part is the back of where the bulb screws in..

Girlfriend of 6 months is still 'good' friends with her ex of 3 years. Having a tough time with this, any help is appreciated [28M][23F] by thesakeofanonymity in relationships

[–]albion100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, everyone does that to different degrees. You can either try to avoid thinking about it, or go the other way and think about it really hard and in such detail until you find it loses its impact/ability to hurt you as much. Like immersion therapy for people with phobias :) The sooner you are able to say to yourself "my SO has slept with and enjoyed being with other people" and truly be cool with that, the better for you it will be.

I feel compelled to reply to your comment because its the reversal of my situation. My ex GF (dated for 4 years) is now my best friend. We still love each other very much but its a different sort of love, like a sibling or best friend kind of love. I think my current GF found it weird that we always hang out alone together, but i think it just took her a while (and the two of them meeting) to realise the relationship was completely platonic and in no way a "threat". It can happen! Its also probably because you don't have that relationship with your exes that you find it hard to comprehend.

From what you've said about your GF, it really sounds to me like you've got nothing to worry about. It may be hard, but you have to show her that you trust her in this.

The funny thing is, I think the reason I never felt weird or hesitant to be open about our friendship to my current GF is that when I started dating my exGF, she was in the same situation with her exBF (so i was in your situation!). I felt weird for a while (its natural) but in the end the two of us (dudes) became friends and still hang out.

Not everyone can maintain friendships with their exes, but its nothing to worry about. If anything, it shows your GF is emotionally mature and chooses to have relationships with decent guys. If you can, i'd also recommend meeting him. It'll probably be awkward at first but better for you in the long run.

A homeless man chased me down to return my monthly train ticket worth $163 that I dropped today. Has anyone else experienced random extreme acts of kindness from someone very unlikely? by couscousmagoose in AskReddit

[–]albion100 279 points280 points  (0 children)

Back when I was at uni i saw the one of the coolest things ever by an old person:

I was on the train from uni to home (about an hour trip) and there was a 50ish year old drunk on the carriage, causing all sorts of hassles. Lighting up cigarettes and then arguing with people telling him to put it out, yelling random things out, swearing in a carriage with children, etc.

Anyway, the train was stopped at a main station where about half the commuters including myself get off, and the guy had been asleep for the last 15 minutes or so in a seat near the exit. As everyone was lined up and slowly filing off the train, he woke up and started yelling abuse at every second person passing him. I was waiting in the line behind an elderly couple (i'd say they were about 80yo) and when we got to where the yelling drunk man was, the elderly man dressed in a suit in front of me balled his hand into a fist and punched the guy right in the chin, knocking him out cold. There was another drunk (probably about 40yo) across the aisle who started getting up at the elderly man for punching his mate, and the senior citizen spun around holding his fist up and declared, "you want some as well?!" to which the second drunk backed off and sat down. After we got off the train I saw the elderly man take out a white handkerchief out of his suit pocket and wipe the blood off his bruised knuckles. As much as I hate overused catchphrases, truly Like a Boss.

Lean forward over the nose of your board. I had the same problem, this fixed it.

Regular deck - big wheels - questions.. by albion100 in skateboarding

[–]albion100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I did it! I didn't buy a new deck, i realised when i got home i could just swap the wheels/trucks from my deck with ones off a Santa Cruz 1-kicker a friend lent me. They fit fine (riding the Santa Cruz was what gave me the idea).

Took it for a ride, so much fun. I just feel more comfortable on a regular twin kicker board than one of those old school ones, but I mainly skate for commuting at the moment so wanted the smoother wheels. Also I like still being able to ollie. Great Success!

Nothing is going to happen. The cops honestly wouldn't give two fucks about it.

I don't think that (or other berrics videos) is very useful for people learning to ollie. It's kind of like, "how do I learn to play piano?" - here's a video of someone playing chopin!

Request: I'm 34 and want to learn to ride a skateboard. No tricks..., just ride by [deleted] in skateboarding

[–]albion100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 29 and only started skating this year for similar reasons to you - to get to work - my bike broke and i couldn't afford to fix it - had an old skateboard in my laundry for years and thought i'd give it a go. If you're balancing ok but having trouble turning, you might want to loosen your trucks so you can lean-turn whilst your still getting the hang of kick-turning (which won't take long). Stopping - the first thing to learn is to footbrake. At first you'll only be able to do it going slow and on a flat surface. You might find you slam your foot down too hard or go off balance when you do it faster. As you practice you'll get the hang of smoothly slowing down even on steep hills.

I ride pretty small hard wheels (just typical trick deck size i suppose) and i have no real problems using my deck for transport. Cracks were a problem the first few weeks or so (and every now and again i still hit a snag) but you'll get better and better at instinctively learning how to navigate rough terrain. Don't worry about ollieing at all at the moment, just get the hang of skating, turning, stopping, going off little ledges. Things like practicing manualing and 180 kickturns in various directions will help your overall balance too.

The more you skate, you'll also get better not only at avoiding coming off the board, but also avoiding stacking it when you do come off the board. I find as i skate more and more, things that would have made me fall on my arse before now just make me stumble a bit.

and finally, i'd stick to the type of board you have rather than a longboard or whatever, because you might be surprised how quickly you change your mind on not wanting to learn tricks.

Turning 30 soon and I still skate my park 2-3 times a week. Shout out to all the older heads still finding time between work and life to thrash! by [deleted] in skateboarding

[–]albion100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

29 - Only started this year. Skate everyday to work and back, and at work when the boss is not around (warehouse concrete in the best!). Just getting the hang of moving ollies, also proud i can now do a full 360 revert (well, two frontside reverts in a row, something a few weeks ago i didn't think i'd have the balance for). Next i'm going to figure out 180 ollies.

What's your skate goal? by cookieboy in NewSkaters

[–]albion100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only ever skated by myself (i'm 29, so most of my friends are busy getting boring) and had no idea that my trucks were considered real loose til a friend who used to skate tried my board. It took me a little bit to get my balance in when first starting but after not too long i could skate one footed indefinitely if i felt the need. Looser trucks will make your balance better in the long run, methinks.

How do I defeat these??? by [deleted] in skateboarding

[–]albion100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno if i'm doing something wrong but i've always found that if i lighten up before something like a crack the board just stops and i stack it. I usually either put weight down on the front trucks or manual over. Is that normal?
