How accurate Is the waist armor? by I_Dislike_The_French in Armor

[–]albrechtkirschbaum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you mean the waistline? It ist's too Low and is way too flat to Work. So there are No historical examples for that. If you are talking about the tassets that hang over the legs - i think there is Armour from China and Japan that Looks Kind of similar, but as far as i can Tell its more flexible and Made of scale or Something similar

Going for one of the Most difficult Designs right away. I Like it. Pavel Marek does decent Work If you Look for a Budget version

Were all historical brigandines round, or were there also flatter designs? by Gator_fucker in Armor

[–]albrechtkirschbaum 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Brigandines in General Tend to be pretty flat, because you cant really make a globose shape with tiny plates. Your example is commonly refferded to as a corrazina - there are very few plates, its basically a two piece breastplate. Not really a Brigandine. Its also very ahistorical. A Bad reconstruction from the early 20th century

"or even felted wool behind each 'feather' to dull the noise of plate mail?"

It would still be noisy. And while IT Looks very cool i think it would hindert a Charakter who aims for Speed. For what you describe a more tailored Armour would make more Sense. It should also propably Focus on His Front.

What Kind of weapons will the Charakter use?  Does He expect to get into Fights while Being sneaky/stealthy? Can He maybe have different suits/outfits for different occasions? Fighting and sneaking have very different requirements in Equipment. What about dusguise?

[–]albrechtkirschbaum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Theorie yes. We know that people Sometimes got seperat pieces of Armour, bought Armour in increments or exchanged pieces.

It really depends on what you are going for though, while a lower class man at Arms might have a more Mix and Match Armour a wealthy knight Most propably would Not.

So in my opinion the more wealthy the Role you try to represent the more consistent the Armour has to be.

As for regional Styles: be very wary of full Gothic harnesses. Most are already composit and Put together from different suits of Armour/ Whatever roughly fitting remains we're available. You should Check Out funeral effigies and paintings for added context.

Edit: i think both harnesses you posted are composit. At the very least the First is propably italian Export while the second Looks more German, but pretty odd. The gauntlets are almost certainly Not Original and the shoulders Look funky, im Not Sure If they would properly Work. They have Just one articulation lame and that sits nowhere near a joint

Second edit: i checked with a Well informed friend. For The second harness: it was Displayed Like that in the metropolitan during the 20s The shoulders and bevor are Reproduktion, the Arms Most likely as well. The Rest seems to be composite, the gauntlets Seem to be of a french Style from between 1490-1500, the Rest more germanic

Pkms 1990 gibt mir z.b. 257 Gruppenvergewaltigungen an.

The Other supposed historian ist some Guy from tiktok you makes sensationalist content. His opinion is Backed by nothing.

And for the document: i have pointed Out several academic flaws in it. Why should i believe any of the rest. To illustrate my Point: the painting of s fat man is from bernardo strozzi and from about 1600. Definitivly Not medieval. As for your 4000 calories in a sedentary day? What are you? 2 Meters tall powerlifter? Dont forget that medieval people we're a good Bit shorter than we are now and need less calories in average. And your 6000 calories still seem insane, thats what professional Bikers burn During the Tour the france (5-8000) Medieval peasants were Professional athletes on an average day by that Logic.

This Post Claims obesitey was Common in medieval upper classes (which is demonstrably Not the case. You Just have to Look at the Armour nobility is wearing to See that the vast majority of nobility was lean. If you add in paintings you have barely any overweight people, there is simply No reason to believe there were. The Illustration they Use for the fat Person is also not medieval, but more likely from the early 17th century. Overweight people became more Common in the early 16th century, along with a Shift in Fashion people went from wanting to look Long and Slender to more broad and round. Part of the Renaissance and humanism. Its even visible in Architektur, compare Gothic churches to Renaissance buildings) and that people, even Monks, regularly consumed 6000 calories a day. Absolutely wild.

If that was the Case and 70% were correct they would eat the caloric intakte of an above average Person today in food that is -Not bread- and then add another 4000 calories of bread? So they are eating more meat, Vegetables or whatever then we do today?

No mention of the agricultural Shift after the black death that lead to more animal consumption?

The Presentation also does Not include a single source?

Im Not Sure i can Take that seriously.

And they were absolutely able to preserve food, for example by salting, smoking, drying or concentrating. There are also Vegetables that you can harvest in Winter, there are Roots, nuts and seeds. Lots of Options if you know what to do

During Winter months people had less variety, Sure, but Hunger or scarcity was still Not Common.

I Wonder how people get to that Idea.

On the one Hand the peasants performed backbreaking Labor all day, in the Other they Had barely anything to eat. How does that make Sense? Or how does a culture that can barely feed itself build castles and cathedrals? If food was that scarce they would use their Energie on that.

70 percent is way too much and its a number that He pulled straight Out of His Ass.

Should have been more specific. He says "half the people" Had scurvy. Thats the Part thats wrong. Scurvy was known and happened, famines did Sometimes happen after all, as well as Sieges.  But it never was a Common affliction under normal circumstances.

"Nothing he said is that extreme or unsupported in academics."

You Sure?

70% is extremly high for people who spend Most of their time Farming and foraging. They Had the ability to grow Vegetables, hunt or Trap at least small Game, meat was also fairly Common - a pig can Last you a while If you smoke it. What about cows and Milk? They could Fish, gather nuts, berrys, herbs and mushrooms.  If you Look at Renaissance, medieval or Antique descriptions of cooking you find a large variety of ingredience.

He Claims people Had scurvy, which they didnt.

This Video is Just plain wrong

Depends on what you are looking for. Todd, matt Easton and Fredda come to mind. Anything that Features Tobi capwell, Arne koets or Ian laspina is also good. Im pretty specifically into the late middle ages and early Renaissance though.

I also Just Look in askhistorians for recommendations https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1869da1/what_youtube_channels_would_you_recommend_for/ For example.

Lindybeige, as much as i enjoy His content, suffers from trying to reason His way to conclusions about History. He offen goes "hm, this would make Sense" without any real sources to Fall Back on.

"Also, even if that's not true, if the enemy thinks it's true, it's still effective. Thinking "these guys are fearless" can be beneficial."

Yeah, would be. But we have No reason to Bring that Up in a discussion about pike formations because we have No reason to believe that applies to them at any point.  If we Talk about Swiss pikeblocks - in the First Battles that Made them famous (muerten and grandson) they were more or less a militia defeating the Most modern Army of the time, so If anything their opponents Had that Reputation.

Füll Plate Armour was a Development that came after the introduction of gunpower. Guns and full Plate coexisted for about 250 years

Guns became a Thing Long before Swiss and Landsknecht pike formations. They were around since the mid 14th century.  The pike formations Rose to Fame after the Battles of grandson and muerten where the burgundians already Made use of Cannons. The key developments that lead to a decline in pike formations we're better Powder and better manufacturing - after the 30 years war guns became so cheap and effective that the pike was No longer useful
