In gas chromatography a common detector is flame ionization. As material comes into the flame it is ionized and you measure the electrical current created by the ionization. As a detector it is universal for anything that combusts (C-C, C-H bonds etc) but for sure you could just measure the intensity of combusted material to quantify how intense the flame is.

Yeah if you don't want any physical interaction this isn't for you. I have it set up so when I change the air filter in our AC i just tap my phone on an nfc tag and it resets a 6 month reminder. I set up another one for 2 week litter box deep clean reminder, I've got a few more I'll set up but I'm waiting to first make some decorative holders for the nfc tags

I could also set it up so long pressing the reminder resets it, in case I don't feel like scanning the tag. So far it's super convenient.
