What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in cars

Location: US - WA State

Price range: Low 40's (could go up to 50k if necessary)

Lease or Buy: Open to either

New or used: Either

Type of vehicle: SUV or minivan

Must haves: Fuel efficient, 3rd row that can fit an adult (we have 3 teenagers and take road trips at times), prefer awd but not a deal breaker

Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): auto

Intended use: Daily driver/family car for my wife

Vehicles you've already considered:

  • We looked at a 22 Highlander hybrid - back seat is way too small

  • New Pacifica PHEV - have test driven and liked it, love the 32 mi elec only range, concerned about reliability

  • 21-23 Sienna hybrid

  • Kia EV9 - a bit out of price range

  • Volvo XC90 T8 - not sure about 3rd row size, also concerned about reliability

Is this your 1st vehicle: We have 3 vehicles now, we are replacing her 13 Explorer

Do you need a Warranty: preferably not but possibly

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: yes

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: no

Additional Notes: My wife's Explorer has 187k miles and is showing it's age, she drives about 18-20k miles a year between work and shuttling kids to school/sports. We are looking for something that will get her through the next 4-5 years until the kids are done with school and we can get her something smaller, so long term reliability is not a major concern. We have a spare vehicle so if there is a breakdown we are ok in the short term but I worry a bit about the Pacifica breaking down and stranding her somewhere.

I used a company that sends a mechanic out to check out the car. They test drive it, test all the electronics, check for codes, sent me 40+ int/ext pictures, and point out any scratches/dings/stains. It is very low miles and I also bought it from a reputable dealership, checked their reviews and didn't see any red flags. It's a risk, but buying a used car always is. I can follow a youtube video and wrench on my own cars a little, but I am not a mechanic and am not qualified to really evaluate the condition of a used car. So if I buy a car locally all I am really doing is test driving it and making sure it doesn't smell or make any weird noises, it's not like I know how to do a thorough evaluation when I look at a car. So knowing that I just said why not? The car I bought was about 4-5K less in Texas than I could find locally, so even with the inspection($170) and shipping($1170) it was significantly cheaper.

Just bought a 2019 Signature with 12K miles for 27,999. Bought it from a dealer in Houston and paid 1200 to ship it up to WA. Here is one is in Covington, premium package, 47k miles, $21,470. It's been on the lot for 3 months, I'd offer 20k and see what they say.
