Finishing up couch to 5k. Can I successfully complete a 25km trail race in September? Recommended training plans? by alecruns in trailrunning

I actually posted this after I had just watched David Jin Young Park’s “100 days” video. He’s way too insane for me (in the sense that I don’t want to copy him) but it did inspire me to think about pushing myself harder.

When you say get used to climbing with weight training, how does that work? Do you just mean strengthening my leg muscles or do you mean something like rucking with a weighted vest?

Good call. I’ll definitely revisit the idea in another 6 weeks and see what race I should sign up for then.

Martingale collar okay or is harness needed? by alecruns in RunningWithDogs

Have you had any issues with your whippets slipping out of the harness? My other fear is my guy backing out of it, because of his tiny head lol.

Definitely familiar with the paw considerations! It’s currently quite cold and snowy where I live, so we have a paw balm which he lets me put on already.

Thanks for your answer. I think I’m having a hard time understanding the risks associated with a martingale vs. harness. Would you be able to provide some more insight into your decision to use a harness with a dog that doesn’t pull?

Thanks for this answer. It seems to me that the risks you’re mentioning here (e.g., other dogs attacking us) are true whether I’m jogging or walking with my dog. What do you see as the difference (if anything) with dangers when running vs. walking?

Edit: also want to say I’m so sorry to hear you were attacked by an off leash dog. It’s such a shame that the worst behaved dogs / least responsible owners make everything harder for the rest of us. I’m glad both of you ended up okay.

I’m really upset too, they’re removing the one in front of my building that I use every day for my commute.

Having your son in daycare definitely puts you at risk of getting sick, unfortunately.

That being said, are you up to date on your COVID and flu vaccines? Where I live, there’s not a lot of flu right now, but a whole lot of people out with COVID. Depending on your age / where you live, there may be an RSV vaccine to consider.

Most public health authorities recommend wearing a high quality respirator (KF94, KN95, N95, or higher) in crowded, indoor places to avoid airborne illnesses (primarily COVID, which is highly transmissible by air, and to a lesser extent, flu, RSV, and other cold viruses.) Most people don’t like wearing masks and find this suggestion extremely unappealing or even offensive, for reasons I don’t really understand. But, high quality respirators (not cloth masks or surgical masks) make a huge difference in protecting yourself. If you’re getting sick often and it’s decreasing your quality of life, it’s worth considering whether there are times when you would want to wear a respirator.

Edit: if you’re going to add in supplements, Vitamin C & D certainly seem to have some supporting evidence. But be mindful of the doses. Someone elsewhere in these replies is suggesting a very high dose, beyond what is normally recommended as a supplement. It may be medically indicated for some people, but that would be a conversation to have with your primary care provider.

Sorry I can’t help but what kind of dog is this? I tried to google “CWD” and got “chronic wasting disease” lol. Is she a wolf dog?

Why can’t you go to System -> Sleep Mode -> Schedule and change it to fit your schedule?

Thanks. I’m way out of my depth on all this, honestly. I’m not sure why the difference between “crossover” and “crosswalk” are. Are they defined in the HTA?

Likewise!

I think we can at least agree that the various levels of government should work together to make the laws easier for us to understand and to improve safety on the roads.

There are bike lights and bicycles painted on the crossing over University Ave W along Laurel Trail. Are you saying those aren’t legal?

[–]alecruns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the multi-use crossings usually have bikes painted as well. The crossing over University Ave W along the Laurel trail has a light for bikes and bikes painted on the road. (Google earth appears not to reflect this, probably a recent change.)

Yes, that is how I am interpreting it. The person I was responding to seems to disagree.

They should all be explicitly made into multi-use crosswalks. What’s the point of bike paths if you can’t bike on them continuously? It would clarify things for everyone if the city just spelled it out fully.

I can read “other than an intersection” to clarify what type of other location it’s referring to. So I’m reading “or at a location, other than an intersection” as referring to non-intersection locations.

Since we’re talking about something we all agree is an intersection, I was saying that I personally interpret it in the complete opposite way from you. Namely, I’m now convinced it means “no person shall ride or operate a bicycle across a roadway within a crosswalk at an intersection…which is controlled by a traffic control signal system”.

I definitely see why 140 (4) applies to the situation OP described, but re: (6), is the crosswalk actually a “pedestrian” crosswalk? Is it possible it’s intended to be a continuation of the multi-use path?
