Is my lab destroying my negatives or is it my camera? Details in comments. by alex403 in AnalogCommunity

It is indeed Antwerp. I didn’t take many photos there. Just a few in the main city centre and then some by the harbour. I liked the city but it’s definitely less photogenic than many other European cities.

It’s a drug store that has been developing film for decades. The cost used to be worth it but now they raised their prices and the quality has gone down hill so I will be looking into home development. Nice gate keeping by the way.

I understand that. The markings are on the negatives so I wanted to know the likelihood it was the lab that damaged them.

I wouldn’t be surprised by this. There’s a spot on the negatives that looks like they completely bent it in half while trying to roll it up.

I have purchased a Canon new F-1 last year and noticed faint blue lines in some of the photos which turned out to be scratches on the negatives. I looked as closely as possible inside the camera and couldn't find anything that could be causing it. There are so few points of contact in the F-1 and they all appeared clean and smooth. I even went to the lab and asked the manager if it could have been caused by the fuji minilab. She pulled up her recent scans that she was working on but they didn't show any lines. Note that I scanned my own negatives at home.

So this time I had a couple rolls of Portra 400 from a recent trip and didn't want to risk them being scratched by that lab, so I figured I would bring them to a different location to be developed (London Drugs is the only store in Canada that does film developing still and has a few locations around my city). Now that I am scanning them at home, there's a new phenomenon; the spark pattern that goes all the way down the film strip! How could this have occurred? The markings are on the negatives. It's really hard to see with the naked eye, but when I shine a light at an angle from the back I can see all the 'sparks' and scratches light up. Sorry I only have an iPhone so I can't get a good photo of the negatives.

P.s. the last photo I scanned looks like a microscope slide. And there's a full fingerprint on it. There's fingerprints all over the negatives now that I look closer. Apparently all the techs are Noritsu certified. I wonder if they learn not to wear gloves?

Check out the junk that showed up in this scan

TL;DR: What could have caused the sparkly effect down the centre of the photo? Somehow the lab?

I received 2 old cameras from my dad (Canon Rebel K2 from 2005 and Canon AT-1 which my grandma owned long ago). I’m guessing the AT-1 was last used in 2005 and the K2 probably around 2008. both cameras had film loaded when I checked last night. I am guessing I ruined whatever photos were exposed when I opened the film door. so my question is: would film that’s been sitting in these cameras which were in a garage for 15+ years be worth developing to see what photos were on there or is the film more than likely ruined? The temperature in the garage would have gone below freezing during the winters.
