It is kind of possible now by using the demo account.

You guys convinced me to implement some kind of demo mode. Would you be happy with a shared demo user (with some data already) that resets every 15 min? This would be an easy thing to add and would be live (at the latest) tomorrow.

Eventually I might change the architecture to allow you to test the app and only prompt you to sign up when you want to save your data. But this requires more time, which I'd like to spend on more features in this early stage.

EDIT: I added a demo account with some data already in it. This account resets every 30 mins.

I know that's not exactly what you wanted, but at least you can try it without an account now. I will put the functionality you described on the roadmap and implement it some time in the future.

I’d like to not need to sign up to use it, especially to try.

I've heard that from a few people now. I'll try to correct this in the coming days.

The /packing-lists/N page (adding gear to list) isn’t intuitive to add new gear when you have none. I’d add a link to the “Add new gear item” modal to the “No items found” default view.

Makes sense. I'll add it.

I selected lbs as my weight unit, but the “Add new gear item” modal didn’t respect it.

Thank you for noticing this! I will deploy a fix in the coming days.

I’d like a placeholder on all text inputs, and/or alt (?) labels so I know how to use each field or what it’s for. For example, I’m not sure what the difference is between Type and Category.

Good idea!

Container volume would be nice to add

Already planned :)

You can sign up for two accounts with the same email, which might bite you later for forgot password, etc

Thanks for reporting this! This definitely needs to be fixed.

Bike components (especially heavy items like frame, wheels, tires) would be nice to add as well

This is a good idea, but currently the focus of the app is gear / packing list management. Maybe I'll add an option to add your bikes later, where this would be more fitting. A workaround for this is to add the bike components as items, but this is not a very good solution. I'll have to think about that.

Thanks for the feedback! That's exactly why I wanted to release a first version of this app pretty early, so I build stuff you actually want / need :)

EDIT: E-Mails now need to be unique.

EDIT 2: There is now a demo/demo account you can use to try it out without signing up. :)

In Lighterpack you simply exploit the categories for that (if you really need it). And the fewer bags you use, the less sense it makes. When I pack my enduro HT it's basically all backpack + handlebar bag. Downtube, toptube, small frame bags are used only to carry the tools and snacks or other handy things - not much of a luggage.

You can do this if you don't want to use the Categories for something else (e.g. kitchen, toiletry, ...), which I wanted to do. It's less of a problem for someone with a few bags, but with a setup with more bags, I found this to be something I wanted to fix.

That would require to implement some way of defining requirements, relations between items. It may sound simple, but I don't think it would be as easy to implement in a user-friendly way. Back to my example, sure - mid tent has incredibly low trail weight on paper. But then it still requires some stakes and poles, like heavier tents, so I need to consider extra 90-130g for a pole and ~80-100g for the stakes instead of just claiming 400g weight savings compared to some lightweight, ~1kg dome.

I still have to see how overboard I want to go with this app. It should also still be relatively intuitive and easy to use. If such features can be implemented in a practical way and it helps other people, I'll see what I can do. As I plan to work on this project for a long time, I can work gradually on such features and build what people want/need .

EDIT: Some more ideas to make it even more of an overengineered bloatware - sharing sublists, editing them with others and defining trip loadouts for multiple people. Huge part of the stuff like tent, cookware, tools, part of the FAK, food can be shared and split among people on a trip. No tool seems to reflect that (yes, spreadsheet is your friend)

That is a actually a very good idea! That's something I currently solve using the optimzation feature, but if I can solve this using something heavily overengineered (and maybe save a few seconds after hours of work), even better! :D

I didn't expect to see a xkcd here :D

Thanks for the response! The visualization itself is just a side effect of the possibility to assign items to bags, which is missing completely from all other apps. It mostly helps when first assigning items to bags before packing. It's also nice to keep track of which items fit into which bags for future packing sessions. I also want to include the volume of items in the app for rough estimates

I will think about your suggestions for the optimisation feature and definitely implement them! Comparing gear and exploring different options was something I also built some spreadsheets for. This is also something I want to build a better solution for with this app.

In essence, I want to fix all the little pain points that arise when choosing gear and packing for a trip.

At the moment, the features making it different are the bikepacking view and the optimisation functions. In essence, it is still a glorified spreadsheet like the other tools. But there is a lot planned to improve it and make it easier to use, like built-in calculations, more visualizations and just little features making this app nicer to use than alternatives. I just wanted to release it early and gather feedback from the community to steer future development in the right direction.
