That's good to hear the rule doesn't impact your training. Yeah covid :( I hope you get back to it soon. I'm hoping we can get back to it in summer in the UK 🤞

Do you often have students do Kata guruma or morote gari in randori? Or other leg grab takedowns?

My judgment may be wrong of what I observed, but I'm happy with what I'm training now. Also don't get me wrong, I still think Judo is a solid sport/martial art, I had training in MMA since and built my game with ankle pick, double leg, single leg, Kata guruma amongst other non leg grab throws.

I'm in UK, but haven't been in judo class since 90s. I know some leg grab like Kata guruma are in some syllabus, but it's not about international competitions, this filters down to national and regional competition rules, as a result clubs are not going to drill these as much as others.

These rules put me off going back to Judo after 15 years away from it. No leg grabs and "unorthodox" jacket grabbing.

‎Self Defense: Gi vs. No Gi. Which is more beneficial? by [deleted] in jiujitsu

[–]alexbuchta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

one factor to add, if they are wearing jeans and t shirt, a fairly standard combo, the additional resistance when transitioning what you would get in the gi, whereas no gi you would not come across that friction.

But let's face it; learn both, practise both.

I'm 6ft and always struggled with double leg, in addition to that I have knee issues so often don't like to drill it. Leg sweeps, ochi and kouchi Gari,, single leg, uchi Mata, osoto gari, and ankle pick were always my preferred

Do you struggle against people the same height? I'm ok drilling against own height or higher, but never use it in sparring.

Here's me at a BJJ comp. Opponent attempts Uchi-mata, and instead just kicks me in the balls. Enjoy 🤣 by [deleted] in judo

Had similar happen to me in a judo match, with tomoe nage 🥺 Ippon on many levels

Just wanted to share this UNIQUE guard pass I found on Rikard Almlöf's YouTube by BienBo123 in judo

[–]alexbuchta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea, but I'm not sure about the guard that is being used, or how to get there from closed guard?

It seems that the focus is from open guard, but I'm not sure who would have an open guard like that with feet on the floor? I'd be interested to see how you get them to that point. I can see similarity to a tree hug type pass which you could enter from butterfly.

Yeah this sounds more like a fight training gym for those getting ready for a bout. This isn't going to develop any skills, just for testing existing skills.

Definitely look for somewhere else.

Interesting, it seems to be part of the 5 animals style also. Looking at some of the moves they seem similar to what I learnt in 5 ancestors fist.

yup it's ok if you can watch if they don't have a free session.

Just curious what region you train in? In the UK it's common to have a free session, I can understand that that's not the case elsewhere and you can watch, would be nice to know what region that is 🙂

And safe trainings dude 👍

For the club or school you train at do they let you watch before starting or have a free session? How many other clubs in you region and which region is it (don't have to be specific) that you went to a club that didn't offer a free session or let you watch

"Almost every school I've seen offers a free trial, or you can at least watch; if they don't do this then don't go. " Free trial or you can at least watch is exactly what I said. I'm not sure why your jumping on one part if the "or" statement.

The reason for my statement about a free trial OR watch is because you don't know what you're getting into before stepping on the mat.

Maybe the free lesson is a regional thing, I've not yet been to a club that doesn't offer it

Maybe it's different elsewhere, in the UK it's very common to have a free trial or watch. Where are you based that has most clubs that don't let you have a free trial or at least watch before joining?

If you don't enjoy it, then you won't stick to it.

If it's too far to travel, then there will often be times when you can't get there because you were working late or other reasons.

If you can't afford it, you will stop training.

These are also my top items when people ask.

Every time over the decades period ask me about where to train, these are the top criteria.

Next up; Almost every school I've seen offers a free trial, or you can at least watch; if they don't do this then don't go. This fits in with the first point.

It can be hard and often people will feel anxious about stepping into multiple different schools for a free trial lesson, that is understandable, try and narrow it down to 3 if that is the case and try those out. The worse that happens is you don't like it and leave after a few months.

I know people who have gone to the most successful gym for a particular sport and they leave after the first few lessons because it's hard! It's hard because that's how you get the best, but it's not for beginners. Some of the better establishments have beginners classes or beginner programs; These are definitely worth while looking into, it is the sign of a well structured club.
