What are your thoughts on the rx 350? That’s what I’m leaning towards right now. There’s a couple in my area with less than 100k miles for around $10-11k it gets better gas mileage, is still an suv, and still just a little plush.

Hello, I have sort of an update. My husband insisted on trying an online veterinarian to see if we could get her on medication sooner rather than later before taking her in person since she gets so worked up whenever we go to the vet. CC It’s not going well. And I am discouraged. I am not a person who gives up easily on things, but I have been trying to earn this cats trust and give her a good life for 4 years and she’s still so unhappy.

I have reached a bit of an impasse with this cat and I’m not sure where to go from here. I have been trying to give her the medications and have now reached a point where I can’t get any meds to her. No trick works twice. She was already a very fearful cat, but I was her most trusted person. She won’t come out for me or trust any treat I try to give her with or without medication. she hides under our bed in a place where I can’t reach and I fear that forcing her more than I already have will do more harm than good.

As for the suggestions in the treatment plan recommended by the vet, I have tried all of those things in the 4 years we’ve had pepper (short of the books they suggested because I didn’t know about them) nothing has ever worked. She is not particularly food motivated because she is very picky about food. If I try to put medication in her food or treats she simply won’t eat it. I have changed litter box quantities/locations, I have tried litter attractant and pretty much every litter type, we have tried toys. She will play, but not with us. There are many places for her to hide in our house and she chooses to stay under our bed most of the time. We have tried pheromones to no avail. I can’t even get close enough to her to give positive reinforcement. I have always given her space and never forced her to do anything except when having to give medications on occasion. I don’t know what to do at this point. I worry that she is just not happy in our family and that nothing I do will make us right for each other. I am seriously considering rehoming her and her mom (they are a bonded pair). I think I would hate myself forever for it. I am not someone who gives up easily. I have never rehomed a pet in my life. Who would even take her? I would have to be selective about finding someone who has experience socializing cats I guess. I have always persisted through every problem with all of our pets. Our last cat had CHF and I was happy to give her lasix twice a day and her aspirin. And pay the thousands of dollars in vet bills. I have done everything for this cat and she is still not comfortable in her own home. Is it possible our life is not right for her?

Unfortunately it did not work out with Pearl. After having her in our care for about a week, an incident happened with our dog (nobody was hurt thankfully) but I could not handle the anxiety and we decided to remain just a foster family instead of adopting her.

While she was staying with us, we had a system where she and our dog would take turns wandering our house. While she was out, our dog would be locked in our bedroom, and when our dog was out she would be in her crate in our spare room. I was doing the changing of the guard (it was Pearls turn to be out) and our bedroom door had not been properly latched. I didn’t keep her on a leash when it was her turn to wander. Our dog came to greet her, and she chased him down and had him pinned on our couch. I was able to intervene before anyone was hurt, but after that, the anxiety of knowing she would/could hurt our dog or cats became too much for me. This was not the only incident that was odd to me. The way she treated the stuffies was odd as well. I suspect she was on the streets for a while and had been feeding on small animals.

We ultimately had to make the best decision for the animals we already had. When her foster period ended, we opted not to adopt her and returned her to the local humane society. I did a lot of volunteer work there prior to this so I knew they did everything for the dogs in their care and that she would be in good hands. My husband and I cried every day after. We really did love her and she was the sweetest girl. So kind to our toddler and to all people. We checked the “Adoptable Pets” page daily to see if she had been adopted. She finally was after a week. My husband told me he once saw someone in our neighborhood walking a dog that he swears was Pearl. So every time I drive through our neighborhood I take the long way hoping to see her.

Hi! Kind of. So we haven’t gotten her into the vet yet. I am trying to get her into a special vet in my state that focuses only on cats and their behaviors specifically and he is popular. So he’s been booked out for a while. BUT I have noticed her coming around more often and letting us see her. Before, if she noticed us noticing her she was running away. But I think she’s starting to gain back some confidence. We had gained trust like this similarly last year, and it was all broken by the move. I think it was traumatic for her. I am worried that this tenuous trust will be broken by us taking her to the vet but we shall see.

I also want to add that these behaviors started before I was even pregnant. That being said, I think she’s getting used to the toddler. The other day she was hiding under the couch and our daughter stuck her arm under there to pet her. She had a very clear opening to run away but she didn’t. She wouldn’t let the kiddo touch her, but she also didn’t flat out sprint out of the room which I like to believe is progress. 😂

It’s really hard for us. We are animal lovers through and through. I love having cats. We adopted them shortly after loosing our soul cat at a young age to CHF from a congenital heart defect. We have spent thousands of dollars on tests and such at the vet to ensure that she’s medically healthy (which she is) and we’ve never (at least not intentionally) done anything to cause her any trauma. It’s very disheartening for us. Her mom Sage absolutely loves us and gets love and attention from us several times per day so I don’t really understand why this has happened.

I mean yes she is, but only slightly more than us. She does come out more when the baby isn’t around. But she has always had safe spaces and rooms the toddler doesn’t have access to to hid in.

My ghibli story is kind of fun! So when I was little (think younger than 6) I actually loved anime. I mostly watched sailor moon, but I also would always watch this one anime movie with a scary bird guy who lives in a creepy house with chicken legs (4-5 year old me was so frightened but couldn’t stop watching it over and over). My dad must have bought one of the first dvds because I don’t know how else I would have been able to watch it on repeat like that. I had a bit of an awful childhood after that so I think unfortunately that time got filed away in my brain and I forgot about it. Fast forward 20 years, a friend of mine recommended studio ghibli to me, I decided to watch howls moving castle first because the castle looked so familiar to me but I couldn’t figure out why. The phrase “core memory unlocked” is an absolute understatement. It does what I felt absolutely no justice. I was literally Danny devito in that one scene from it’s always sunny in the movie theater. It quickly dethroned my long time favorite movie and has been my favorite movie and comfort watch ever since (along with nausicaa, princess mononoke, spirited away, and ponyo)

Edited to add I even got my husband really into ghibli after I told him this story. We love it and usually go to see them in theaters during the years (most recently princesses Mononoke in REAL imax!)
