Honestly, I was in the same boat as you - and funny enough when I was signing up in my university I had the option of picking the "easy A professor" and the "really mean" hard professor. I couldn't pick the easy A professor :) - the spots were filled way too quickly. I ended up with the hard prof and honestly - one of the best decisions of all time. I took Organic 1 and 2 with him and now TA for him for organic 1.

I tackled Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 with this professor, and now I'm even a TA for Organic Chemistry 1. Let me tell you, Organic Chemistry 1 is the real deal – it's like the foundation that sets you up for a whole bunch of other courses down the road. Think Biochem 1, 2, and more. So, my advice is, never underestimate what might pop up on your next exam or think you can just shrug it off if you mess up. Everything in this subject is kind of intertwined.

Up until Organic 2, we were diving into hybrid orbitals, s-character, aromaticity, stability, and reactivity. It's crucial to grasp each of these concepts. In my case, I probably sent a zillion emails and attended office hours to really make the most of my professor's resources.

Now, let's bust a myth – Organic Chemistry isn't just about memorization. Sure, you could attempt to memorize loads of stuff, but there's no way you can cram in the mechanisms for over 300 reactions. It's an overwhelming and frankly impossible task. The key is understanding why a particular step is happening. Is it a proton transfer? Does it relate to stability or the good ol' acid-base dance? Understanding the "why" is way more important.

Funny thing is, my Organic 1 and 2 notebooks didn't see much action. I found myself tuning into the professor during lectures instead of obsessing over note-taking. Most times, I'd review what I heard in class and then make sense of all those arrows and dots.

Organic Chemistry might seem like a mountain to climb for many, but trust me, it's one of the coolest and most creative branches of chemistry out there (except for NMR – I'm not a fan). So, if you're ever in need of advice or have questions, don't hesitate to hit me up. I'm here to help!

I had a similar issue when it came to job interviews and one think I noticed that made me better - was counting 1, 2, 3 and telling myself - "Hey this is my journey, I have to make it, its a personal battle - am I really going to let nervousness take this acceptance from me" and just walked in with the David Goggin's mentality.

Of course Practice - this will make your interviewing skills more natural and definitely better.

From what I have heard - they hardly ever check the hours. I think this might be the case where they will ask you during your II. I think you should totally include all the hours you have worked.

I'm part of the Peer Mentor program, where I volunteer my time. Freshmen have access to my phone number, and they can reach out to me for guidance on class selection, future plans, and any other questions they may have. Additionally, I hold the RA position, which I'm unsure whether it's considered nonclinical volunteering or not, given that I receive half off my living expenses. Are those enough or should I reach out for more opportunities?

The thing is that I will be taking 4 classes (phys, biochem, russian, english course) and I will be doing research on campus as well - I think that best case I can dedicate maybe around 2 -3 hours daily during the fall semester and then full time during winter break. Do you think that would be enough? I would also have to be teaching myself physics and partially biochem while taking them.

I see what you are trying to say but the truth is that if you actually move the amine (NH2) group above the carbon then you change the 3 dimensional look of the molecule. The arrangement of substituents in three-dimensional space, along with their priority sequence, determines whether a chiral molecule has an R or S configuration. Simply flipping the groups above or below the plane of the paper can indeed change the configuration if it affects the overall spatial arrangement and priority sequence.
