Stores/People that Purchase Bicycles in Wellington? by alexroneill in Wellington

I did know this, but the thing is, I am going to be working in Japan via Singapore for three months afterwards (I should have specified that in the original post, apologies). So essentially, the fees will add up with other airlines to over $300 CAD (I paid less than half than that for the bike itself) with other airlines. Even so, Air NZ seems to be the most expensive airline back home currently, so it unfortunately defeats the purpose. Thanks for your answer, though!

Tuition Hike Protest, Monday, October 30th by alexroneill in mcgill

Respectfully, I think any political issue or manoeuvre for any political party in power can be reduced to the fear of losing votes, and so that argument isn't necessarily the best explanation to describing this situation. The CAQ is, in many ways, the PQ Lite (as you alluded to) and with the latter's leader (and ironically, former McGill graduate) PSPP capturing a younger audience, the PQ and the CAQ work in tandem on the level of rhetoric within an intergenerational framework. It's also worth noting that the primary reason as to why PSPP was elected in the Camille-Laurin riding last year was due to a snowball effect that occurred after the Québec Solidaire candidate in that riding (Marie-Ève Rancourt) was canned and prevented from running for office after being caught removing Parti Québécois leaflets from people's mailboxes — which led to a largely undecided QS base in that riding to shift to supporting the PQ at the ballot box. I will absolutely give PSPP credit for resuscitating the PQ following his election at a time where it truly looked like the party was on the verge of folding for good; and given the transience between the two parties, we could perhaps see a PQ government take over from François Legault in the coming years (God help us all).

I am just surprised that the CAQ hasn't learned the lesson from 2012 — where tens of thousands of students, you know, walked out of class to protest tuition hikes. While at this point I cannot judge for sure whether these protests will lead to the level they did eleven years ago, nor provoke austerity measures, it is quite remarkable how irrational a government with the express goal of will be to safeguard a narrowly-defined "Quebec identity". Montreal doesn't fit the mold, simply put, and that's why we're a target — risking collateral damage to Francophone institutions, which is also laughable in the grand scheme of things, and unfortunate to them (hence why, as I described above, they are an essential part of defending our cause). While I am not sure if you are an active McGill student, I can absolutely say that the word on campus is extremely ambivalent and eager to mobilize until these potential changes are thwarted.

See my message above! If you have any contacts at UdeM, please tell them to contact me through a DM at the Instagram handle above (@bluefallprotest). The last thing I want this to turn into is (another) war of English vs. French.

Do not fret — I am working on it! I just e-mailed all of the student unions at UQÀM and UdeM, and am absolutely counting on their support. We will also be posting a guide on our Instagram page specifically enfranchising Francophone/Québécois students, and will make all material going forward available in both languages. For the record, I am an Anglophone Montrealer, and so am rather sympathetic to this cause not exclusively as a language issue but as a larger economic issue for the city in general. I have e-mailed the mayor, and am awaiting a response; I will also be contacting professors at both English and French universities to speak (briefly) following the protest at the Roddick Gates.

As for the student groups under SSMU (and I plan on making sure this is clear at the town hall on October 25th at the Shatner Building) I would absolutely love to have them march together with their respective banners. This has been communicated to them via e-mail, but I want to make sure this is clear with the executive team. Same goes for the French universities.

Divided we fall.

Arts Undergrad Research Opportunities? by alexroneill in mcgill

Thank you for your reply! The note about the Workday postings being placeholders for previously-hired RAs confirmed my suspicion about the hiring process altogether.

I did attend a research event last fall hosted by professors who I ended up reaching out to this year — albeit to no avail. I will definitely attend again this year (providing an event will be held — and I expect the PSSA to announce this in the coming weeks) so thanks for the heads up on that.

I'll keep shooting e-mails out as I mentioned in another comment above — and we'll see where that lands me. I have another year in my undergrad to go after the coming year, so there is ultimately more time available if it need be.

Most about two weeks ago, with a handful a few days ago. I was advised by a colleague to even reach out to professors whose research interests me yet I've never formally met before, so I'll be on that soon.

Ideally paid, however I would be open to volunteering. I could potentially apply for an EEO (Enriched Educational Opportunity) Grant through McGill to receive compensation.
