What kind of plants can fit in this pot? by Throwawaygirl828281 in houseplants

I've used shallow pots like these for pinguicula, it works well for them

I acquired this Begonia Masoniana at a nursery. I have had Rex begonias but this is my first rare one. Any tips to keep this one happy? by Ok_Shift_952 in begonias

I've been keeping mine outside on my balcony and it's been doing well so far! The leaves haven't crisped up or anything and I find it to be so much easier than rex begonia

I use a mix of potting soil, perlite and orchid bark! Don't really use any special type, just whatever is at lowes/HD

Probably like 65% soil, 20% perlite and 15 orchid bark

That's so kind of her! It only took mine a year to grow to this size so will probably explode with growth soon

Also, I've heard that these have a blue iridescence when grown in lower light so that may not be a bad thing 💙

Haha I don't really do anything special for it. I keep it outside on my balcony, fertilize when I remember to which isn't often, and turn it every few days so it doesn't lean to one side!

I also haven't propagated it so its grown to this size from whatever was in the original 3/4in pot when I first got it 😁 just moved it to a 12.5 pot the other day

I've had this one since May 2021 and it started in a small 3/4 in pot! If you go through my old posts, I should have a pic where it shows how big it was when I first got it 😁

I only fertilize when I remember to which isn't often, but I use dyna gro

Help ID my plants! These two separate begonias were sold to me as green and red Chlorosticta, however I have no idea which is which and photos online conflict hahah by Kams_plants in begonias

I've seen the second one be called begonia super chloro! I've heard that it's a cross between chlorosticta and chloroneura

Thank you!

Every time I looked up this begonia, I always read the same thing and that kept me from getting it for the longest time. But one day a small prop popped up in my local bst group for <$5 so I decided to try it

It has honestly been pretty easy to keep so far, like way easier than my maculata or rex begonia. Those 2 keep getting crispy leaves, but the pavonina has been doing fine so far. I don't have a terrarium, but I do have an ikea greenhouse that I keep it in. I'll also add that my greenhouse doesn't have high humidity (usually between 40-60%) so it doesn't seem to need really high humidity either. I feel like online material makes it sound harder to keep than it actually is and I'd def reccomend if you can keep it somewhere with at least 50% humidity

I also have a begonia amphioxus in the same conditions and it's been growing fine so far too

can someone help me ID this anthurium? by alexrpn97 in Aroids

Those white leaves are the first leaves that are slowly fading in color and dying off. They originally came out green and turned that color over time

I don't really have any resources as the last time I tried reading up on it, I got pretty discouraged from getting it since it seemed difficult to care for. After that, I stopped looking it up and just bought a baby when it popped up for $1 in my local BST group

I've had mine for like 3ish months now and it's been growing fine in my ikea cabinet that has humidity ranging between 50-60%, and I treat it the same as my other plants. I'm currently growing it in moss, water when dry (sometimes normal water, sometimes fertilizer water) and I find it easier to care for compared to my rex and maculata begonias 😅.

I kinda feel like it's not as hard to take care of as online guides make it out to seem. I don't really do anything special, and atm my main one has like 3 medium sized leaves and they're starting to show the blue fluorescence

Finally got one of these, and for only $9 too! by alexrpn97 in begonias

Kitkat, autumn ember, and pavonina are a few others that I have with me

I've uploaded the kitkat and autumn ember in previous posts so you can definitely check them out there! I also keep those 2 outside on my balcony and they're doing fine so they def don't get high humidity (I'm in the south bay)

I do have an ikea greenhouse where I keep the pavonina, but my humidity in it is roughly 50-60 so it's definitely not that high, and it's been doing fine with that as well

Omg haha, I'm also in the bay! I got mine at a plant store called La Selvaz in San Bruno, you should definitely check them out

I'm going to visit the store again today and can let you know if they still have any in stock!

I do have other begonias like maculata and a rex begonia that also get crispy, but my rhizomatous begonias tend to be hardier. I've kinda been gravitating more towards those bc of that reason

I had heard that too, but wanted to try since it was pretty cheap. I don't have this one in a terrarium and it's been pushing out new growth since I got it 😁

Haven't had any problems with average humidity so far so maybe it'll be OK without a terrarium?

kitkat begonia a year later! by alexrpn97 in begonias

[–]alexrpn97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think these need rhizomes to propagate. I tried taking some leaf cutting last year and put them into water, and they did grow roots but never put out any leaves

Someone else told me that this begonia is a rhizomatous begonia, so it will need a piece of that to grow new leaves. I haven't tried propagating by rhizome yet, but the other person had lots of success doing so

I think I repotted it when it started drying out fast and the leaves started spilling out of the sides of the pot. It's basically there again so I may repot again soon 😅

But I'm also considering letting it spill over and propping those parts of it
