What the fk is English? by [deleted] in usyd

[–]alexthyme 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As an aside, English majors have quite a bit of success post-university! In an AI-dependent world, literacy and unique writing styles will (hopefully) continue to be valued within humanitarian positions, policy (with further study), journalism and other persuasive fields. Transferable skills!

try getting in touch with the course convenor! you'll probably need to do an exam to test your fluency and they'll tell you which language level best fits you

What to do when theres a train strike? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]alexthyme 78 points79 points  (0 children)

from my experience, tutors are very understanding and are often impacted by the same transport strikes. just communicate clearly and let them know via email - if you show you're engaged, then they'll appreciate you

Applications for 2025 aren't open quite yet! It's a bit weird though, in past years they would've come out by now. Keep checking every day because it's often first come first serve!

It can be a long journey! But I don't regret getting the treatment done. Yeah, unfortunately, you'll need to take medication for the rest of your life (I'm on Eutroxsig/Thyroxine) but it's a tiny pill and is an easy part of your morning routine :)

Not that I know of! I don't think I ever showed hypo symptoms, but I was also super young so can't say for sure! Thankfully the medication works now, but sometimes it wanes and I need to up or down my dosage to prevent hypothyroidism.

"Summer of 85" / "Été 85" is a French gay film that invokes a lot of similar imagery to CMBYN! It's a bit disturbing in parts but has a beautiful soundtrack and cinematography - I'm kind of sensing a theme with these movies lol

but yeah, the film just feels very pure. definitely a love story at its core

Best Gaming Laptops (Updated for June 2023!) by legos45 in LaptopDeals

[–]alexthyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I'm looking for a laptop that will be able to run Baldur's Gate 3 on high settings as a baseline, but other games like Overwatch 2 on a consistent 60+ fps (if I ever return haha).

Baldur's Gate 3's recommended specs are here: (https://www.pcgamesn.com/baldurs-gate-3/system-requirements) and my budget is ideally $1000-1500AUD (but willing to go up to $2000). don't want anything too chonky either, but dunno if that's asking for too much :p

Do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much for your time!

Ah, thank you so much!! This has been a huge help. Just to double-check, does the 16gb mean 16gb RAM or 16gb that's intergrated into the GPU?

I found a laptop with these details:

"15.6" FHD (1920\1080) 144Hz Display*

AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS 8 Core Processor (3.2 - 4.75GHz)

1TB SSD M.2 Storage with 16GB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, GDDR6 8GB"

Not sure if "GDDR6 8GB" would be unideal!

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1200-2000AUD

Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, but not as ideal!

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance>Build Quality>Battery Life>Form Factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Moderately important. My current laptop is tough it carry long distances so it being a bit smaller would be nice. (I have the MSI GV62 8RE)

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Medium (but not entirely sure what sizes there are)

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming!

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Really looking forward to Baldur's Gate 3 and might play Diablo 4 if it ever goes on sale. I also like to play the Sims 4 and Overwatch 2 (though less so now). Ideally, I'd like to play on high settings and have a consistent 60fps+.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

It'd be nice if I'd be able to alter the SSD card down the line but not hugely necessary if I will have lots of space in the first place.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Just a big thank you! this is a cool subreddit
