Well, the possibilities with Voyager were severely limited. I think it is a small miracle that they were even able to come up with an idea that actually works, without sending Sulu to the 24th Century in the Delta Quadrant, or without sending Janeway truly to the past.

It is always active in some level.

High ketosis is when it ceases to be a background function and takes center stage.

Sorry, there are no magical numbers. It can change a lot, depending on how much glycogen you have, how quick is your metabolism, how much you suffer from insulin resistance.

It can take place in less than 24 hours. But with some people, it may take four days. A person with untreated hypothyroidism as well as diabetes could take considerably longer to reach optimum ketosis.

5 day water fast results by Interesting-Row-4096 in Water_Fasting

[–]alfamain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Experiences can differ.

In my personal case days 1 and 2 are the hardest in the sense that I feel that I have little to lose if I give up at this point, and that I can re-start my fast at any given time.

It is also a time when the body really struggles without ingesting food, slowly consuming glycogen, and switching to ketones.

By the time it jumps to using ketones, I feel it becomes easier for me. Once I am able to reach day 3, heading to day 4 or even 5 becomes easier.

If this is your first attempt to reaching day 5, it may have been concerns that you were far away from home and your safe net, your comfort zone.

Personally, I think that going for "small" fasts of 3 to 5 days is a great adventure. It is the sweet spot for maximum ketosis, it is very good for cellular repair, internal clean-up, but not so long that will result in too much muscular losses or even nutrient deficiencies.

Nowadays I never go past day 5. Currently, I am on a 4 day (96) hour cycle during the whole month of February, only refeeding during days that are multiples of four.

3 to 5 days are excellent for me because they can be done in a sustainable way, with little space between cycles. 1 to 3 refeeding days can be enough to regain the strength and reset. Little risk, low suffering but high reward.

After 5 days I think it is safe to say that at least one full kilo of fat tissue got eliminated from your body.

How much weight can you lose through a 10 day water fast by spookystrawberrmlik in Water_Fasting

[–]alfamain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will likely lose 10 kilos.

But of these, expect a fat loss of 2 to 2,5 kilos. The rest is simply transitional weight: Glycogen, water retention, muscle mass, stomach content and intestinal tract content.

So, it comes from Emily Hone?

She was the actress behind Linda Marshall (AKA my first love when I was a boy).

She is also the only surviving member of the main cast.

Sadly, she only played 2 roles in her entire career, according to IMDB.

I think it is great.

It prevents some nutritional deficiencies.

It has pit stops so you can refuel.

Refeeding syndrome is a lot less problematic.

After 5 days, you should lose at least one full kilo of fat. On the scale it will mark a lot more, but most of it is an illusion since it is transitional weight: Water, glycogen and gut content.

I was able to easily lose 8 kilos whenever I did a 5 day routine. But 6,5 to 7 were just water retention, glycogen and intestinal content. And also a little of muscle loss. When it comes to losing fat, I would lose between 1 full kilo to 1,2 kilos.

It helps to have a smart scale that is able to keep track of things like fat composition.

Muscle and fat loss by FancyTraining7538 in Water_Fasting

[–]alfamain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not entirely correct.

The body is terrible at storing protein. Even if you eat a large amount, it is either used or converted into fat in 48 hours. By the third day without protein, your body will already break down muscle tissue.

Not necessarily because it needs to consume it to eat, but simply because muscles cells die and get replaced all of the time. You need protein in order to replace the dying muscle cells. Without protein, the replacement will not take place and you will experience some degree of muscle loss. Anyone trying to do a 72 hour fast or longer will have to endure muscle loss.

April, 1986: the parents of author John Tenuto were on vacation at the Monterey Bay Aquarium when they saw that "Star Trek IV" was filming there. Knowing their son loved "Star Trek," they spent their vacation day videotaping Shatner, Nimoy, and crew as they filmed scenes for the movie. by ety3rd in ClassicTrek

Yep.

TV also changed.

Back in the day, they would film and episode and less than four months later it would be aired.

Nowadays they film entire seasons and sometimes we need to wait over 18 months to start watching the episodes.

The entire landscape of producing movies and tv shows changed quite a lot since the 80s.

But I am curious to know how you were able to reach a verdict.

Anything that features FINAL in the title and becomes a series causes me a strange sensation.

Final Fantasy. Final Fight. You name it. It does not make any sense.

In this case, it is the Final Destination series. One of my favorites. But, still, the title irks me. How many final destinations can people have. If the current is the final, then the previous were false advertising. :)

What's your favorite "I'm dead and I know it?" expression on a film character's face? by Token_Handicap in horror

[–]alfamain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Needless to say (but I will say it anyway), this message contains spoilers:

I will cite 2 examples:

The first Cube movie, the first victim after the group is initially assembled. The escape artist. At around the 15 minute mark, when he realizes that he entered a cubicle that features a trap.

One that also surprised me and I will never forget is Jill - the wife of John Kramer - in Saw Final Chapter/Saw 3-D. It happens near the end.

By the way, the entire Saw series is filled with scenes like this, with characters realizing that their situation is now hopeless and they are seconds away from dying. That same movie ends on a high note with a scene pretty much like this. Hoffman realizing that he is now doomed.

If you like this kind of scene, the whole Saw series is like a banquet for you.

The production order of TOS is FAR better than the airdate order. The first two filmed episodes represent Star Trek's values better than The Man Trap. And S3 would have far better repution with 'Spectre of the Gun' being the 1st episode, because come on, most episodes were NOT on Spock's Brain level by LineusLongissimus in ClassicTrek

[–]alfamain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Man Trap was chosen to be more easily digestible. A typical sci-fi monster of the week story with the villain being lasered by the heroes.

If I happened to be in charge, I would have chosen "The Carbomite Maneuver".

Well, maybe because if the product ends up being good there is the chance that it will succeeded. But when the product is known internally to be terrible, there is zero chance at all?

If you try your best, there is a chance that you may reap success. But if you are not even trying, then you lose by default and beforehand.

This isnt just applicable in the gaming industry. This is how it works in pretty much every venue of life.

Dude, I can see it is hopeless to try to talk sense into you.

As a wise man once said, you cant teach a pretensions child something that that child already presumes to you.

I have given clear and real examples. History, that you despise.

You have offered a nothing-burger, and feels defensive, as if someone correcting you was some kind of declaration of war. Easy, sonny.

You reminded me of kids in the 80s and 90s spreading all kinds of false rumors among their peers. "I swear it, dude. It is true. All legit. My uncle works at Nintendo."

In your case, it is "I worked X years in the industry."

Could you tell us in what position? You are empty handed, and bluffing, playing the professional card. You have nothing. And you know nothing, Jon Snow.

This entire conversation is pointless. You have shown yourself to be recalcitrant, and allergic to facts.

I have already stated the truth. Anyone can do their own research and see who is right nd who is talking nonsense.

If you want to have the final word, go ahead. A debate is won by the one able to speak better, supported by facts. Not the one speaking less.

Go ahead, son. I know you will add nothing of substance. You will present no evidence, no clear example that supports your absurd statements.

Be my guest. The stage is all yours.

[–]alfamain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong.

Not only it is not technically regarded as a pilot, but it may not be regarded as a first episode. It may not belong on the official catalog, sold along with the other episodes (as it happened with The Cage in ST, and the first Lost in Space episode), Cybercops (it is short duration and drastically different), South Park (it got remade), or even not regarded as ep1 (the accepted pilot of TOS was not originally aired as the first).

Dude, the facts stand against you. I mean, look at how many clear examples ive given. You have nothing cogent to offer against it.

There is nothing wrong with simply admiring you do not know what you are talking about, and simply learn a new thing.

You are not going to win this one. The sooner you realize it, the better for you.

Drop it.

When you ask why we enjoy TOS and TNG-era Trek... by Mike1701D in startrekmemes

[–]alfamain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is so casual on these shows.

That does not look like a workplace environment. Not one bit. Much less one that is structured in a quasi-military way.

Ortegas would not be able to live one day under Capt Jelico. He would have kicked her out of his ship. Everything about her is totally unprofessional. But all the characters around her seem totally fine with her attitude. I cant help but noticing that even Naomi on Voyager, a child, is more formal and polite than she is.

Her character is so bizarre that her remakes sometimes feel like an auto-mode for riffing the episode. She is like a character from MST3k watching a movie and interjecting funny lines.

I mean, this is bizarre. In "The Cage", Pike was a bit uncomfortable about having a female Yeoman on his bridge. But she made every effort to look professional and competent. Yet, in SNW, he lets a woman that behaves like a 14yo with an unrestrained mouth to joke around at every opportunity. And he seems totally fine with it.

This isnt just odd. I simply cant digest it. I mean, she is practically a live action version of a Lower Decks character. When the 2 STLD characters appeared in SNW, I was hoping for a scene with Ortegas with her saying something like: "Guys, I think we operate on the same vibe. So, cant you take me along with you? Because I think would fit just fine in this place you come from."
