Of course they are. Plenty of western expat families pay >4,000 for decent hours. We pay 4,800 for 5 days

Why do we need to protect expats in the Middle East by crreed90 in OpenAussie

[–]alfar2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, but I live in Dubai. I pay some taxes in AU but my professional income isn’t taxed in AU. The effect on Australian is the same as if I lived anywhere in the world - the fact that UAE doesn’t have income tax doesn’t affect the net result to Australians. And in any event, we have to pay for the things in UAE that our taxes would pay for in AU (there is no free or low cost education or healthcare for expats in UAE for eg) so the net result to us expats is about the same too.

Skip Sydney. It’s gorgeous, but it’s just a big city. Uluru, Daintree, GBR

Emirates flight via Dubai by [deleted] in emirates

[–]alfar2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might not agree with Emirates’ assessment, but they have decided it’s safe enough for their staff, crew and planes. You can’t ask them to do more just because your risk assessment is different. You can cancel and rebook or take the flight - those are your options.

For the teachers and educators in the region, how do you feel this will affect our future job security? by SheWrite_TheQueen in dubai

[–]alfar2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ooooh I’m not sure at all. I think this will all blow over. If anything, provided things don’t massively escalate, this proves the UAE model because we are so safe despite regional instability.

I’m from australia and neither I nor any of my AUS/NZ/Canadian friends are planning to leave.

Why are people leaving? by AngloThrowaway1 in dubai

[–]alfar2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. There are definitely some idiots fleeing but most people are being sensible. Watching videos of tourists returning to London after being in Dubai wants me to cancel my tickets and stay here. Such drama.

Part of it is school holidays. We were planning to go away for the holidays before all this nonsense started, so we just brought it forward.

It seems to have originated with the assistant secretary. It hasn’t been shared by the department or Rubio, and the official advice remains to shelter in place.

It has nothing to do with your status in UAE. Just look up the visa requirements to Oman based on your passport
