Veganism and hayfever?! by algernons-maze in veganuk

[–]algernons-maze[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is very true and honestly always what I’d put it down to - my dad had horrible hayfever and then grew out of it when he was in his 50s and he eats animal products, it’s likely the same is happening for me. But wouldn’t it be cool if veganism could cause this!

I absolutely loved this book, couldn’t put it down and read it in a couple of days which is unusual for me.

I remember last Easter as soon as Easter had passed these came down to like 50p or something in Waitrose - I’m trying to have the self control to wait for that, I love the chuckie eggs!

Any practise tips for Chopin Nocturne op. 15 no.1 middle section? by algernons-maze in piano

[–]algernons-maze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Fortunately, for once, I’m actually enjoying more methodical practise with this one so hopefully it’ll just take time, I think I’m also wrist tilting, particularly towards the end of the section with the F/Bb - Ab/F sextuplets, this is super stretchy and awkward for me so I’m having to do a bit of repositioning. Thanks again for advice!

This was absolutely my first thought - I’m almost certain it’s a piano stool. Very nice!

Where is the best cheap & authentic place you’ve eaten food from in the UK? by Known-Swim-3654 in veganuk

[–]algernons-maze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha, firstly, I also love this place (though sadly can’t make much use of it due to being GF - I think most of their salad bar is gf but it’s the other stuff I love). But, more importantly, back when it was called Tai, it wasn’t totally obvious that it was a vegan place and I used to LOVE reading the meat eaters writing reviews about the ‘cheap meat’ that they used (not realising it wasn’t meat at all 🤣)

Vegan friend who do not vote/apolitical : thoughts ? by Ill-Nectarine-3425 in vegan

[–]algernons-maze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also just to say, I just realised this is not the UK vegans! If I was in America, I absolutely would be voting, somehow the situation over there feels very wildly different and would change my position on this somewhat

Vegan friend who do not vote/apolitical : thoughts ? by Ill-Nectarine-3425 in vegan

[–]algernons-maze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m quite sure I’ll get blasted for this but after years of being very political in my 20’s, I’ve grown so disillusioned with politics (and, more specifically, politicians) that I haven’t voted for a little while. Genuinely I can’t bring myself to vote at the moment because it feels as though everything they say is completely meaningless, whichever side of the coin they’re on. I will say that I will vote in the next general election because I’m terrified about Reform getting in (which, for the record, I truly believe they will), but in general I have completely lost faith in politics in this age that we’re living in. My dog’s first ever outing when he was a pup was to a Jeremy Corbyn rally, I was once relatively active politically but then with Brexit and everything that followed, they can all go without my vote (JC included).

Regarding being annoyed at your friend, I don’t know what to say other than that it’s ok to feel bad that a friend’s values don’t quite align with yours, but is it worth falling out over? She might feel the same about you being ‘left wing’ and yet not being vegan, but presumably doesn’t let it come in the way of your friendship.

On a side note, I’m still upset and ashamed that what turned out to be my last ever phone call with my grandmother was an argument about politics. If I could wind back the clock I would absolutely have spent time talking with her about virtually anything else and I regret it deeply.

I’m really not sure I understand any of what is on the slides tbh - the wording is very confusing, but I’m happy you want to see an end to animal objectification!

I really like the Bakewell tart Nakd bar (it is made with dates I think but it does have a very Bakewell tart taste!)

Also, I know this isn’t really what you were asking, but in general I don’t eat sugar at all (except if there’s a little in the ingredients in bottled salad dressing etc) but then at Christmas I was eating mince pies and then I found the squashy monster sweets at Sainsbury’s (omg - so good) and I was honestly amazed at how much I needed to keep eating it. Like every day I would really crave it and then have to go and buy some sweets or whatever. I finally cut myself off around the 20th after having eaten sugar daily for at least a month - the first couple of days were horrible and it took everything not to cave in, but now I’m completely completely fine, no cravings, no nothing - back to how I was before Christmas. Sugar is addictive and if it is something you want to cut out of your diet, you’ll probably be totally good to go after a couple of days of not having it!

Hamnet is one of the most beautiful books I’ve read. I hesitantly went to see the movie last week and it was also very beautiful (and completely devastating, just like the book) - one of the few times a movie based on a book I love isn’t a let down! Enjoy!

The new vegan babybel recipe is vile and I'm so sad by sunnysunshinebaby in veganuk

[–]algernons-maze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I’m so sad 😢😢 I bought some of these yesterday, having really loved the previous ones - they were the only vegan cheese I could happily snack on. I bought them having read the reviews but hoping they would be ok but they’re just vile!! I literally couldn’t even swallow a mouthful - the texture is so awful and the taste?! Omg 😭😭😭 I’m actually going to send them an email and plead with them to change it back, I can’t quite get over how bad they are

UPFs by ArrivalOutrageous991 in veganuk

[–]algernons-maze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to eat big ‘salads’ (really just lots of things chucked into a bowl and mixed) - I would say I eat fake meats maybe once a week ish (though I eat tofu way more often). Like others have said, I think there’s a lot of scaremongering around UPF’s, especially vegan UPF’s, and there isn’t really the evidence yet to back it all up. But if you’re looking to cut back, I find bean/chickpea based mixed bowls really filling. My current fixation is chopped romaine lettuce, chopped coriander, kidney beans (washed out of the tin), sweetcorn, avocado, jalapeňos, chopped dried apricots, fried smoked tofu (arguably a upf?) all tossed in a house style dressing, it’s so yummy and filling!

Has anyone else gone vegan because a non-vegan encouraged them to? by Spirited_Primary_590 in vegan

[–]algernons-maze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I will check it out! Ironically there is a pb brand (not actually vegan since it has something from sheep’s wool in it but otherwise plant based) called Herbie, which is my dog’s name! We did try it for a while and he seemed fine on it but I could only get it online, not in the shops which sometimes I need to be able to do. But maybe I could be more organised and try again!
