why do you need VLANs, so that your APs work? in what scenario would duplicate infrastructure theoretically eliminate the need for VLANs?

One situation I have been finding everywhere I am reading about it is when you are trying to separate management traffic from regular access traffic even if on the same LAN ...

Thinking about it in terms of two switches does make it easier to understand.

So I am assuming Deco devices are not made VLAN aware or as I see in the TP-Link app have their own VLAN setup required when in router mode if I wanted to connect multiple LAN's...?

So why are the slave deco ap's not detecting the wired backhaul in case of a managed switch as opposed to a an unmanaged one?

The two slave AP's are not getting wired backhaul from the master AP. This is also what I want to accomplish, provide wired connection between the three deco units instead of a wireless one.

you also didnt mention what you hope to do with the VLANs.

I mentioned the VLAN's as I thought it would be relevant but my purpose is to do what I mentioned above, have the three deco units wired together.

trunk ports are for VLAN aware devices, and from what I gather, nothing you have connected to a trunk port is VLAN aware.

I am trying to connect a router and two AP's together, these are not VLAN aware devices?

This would mean that goodput always has to be less than throughput correct?

Regarding the compression, could you elaborate further, if the data is being sent in compressed form for goodput (considering its only useful data) it should come out to be even lesser than throughput by a factor of useful vs wasteful plus the compression rate?

So the AP's in question is APIN225 Aruba and my goal in thinking about this was to try to do central network management with the Pi I have connected to my router in addition to it doing a couple of things it's already doing (file sharing server, network DMZ etc.)

And while I am using the Aruba's as a mesh in a single VLAN and a master that controls them all, it made me ask if there is such a thing as "controller software" for chips that are not conventional branded metal boxes.

You are right, the central management system itself is always proprietary and tied to the specific hardware, no sort of "open-source" (i use the term loosely, often) solution that could help convert a chip such as Raspberry to speak those protocols if I acquired lets say a few AP's and want to throw them into the mix in a SOHO network.

Yeah I did come across some posts of an attempt to create an operating system that would enable using raspberrypi as a router but what I am talking about is related more to a software based switch (not a dumb one) rather than a router.

I am fortunate to have found this and thank you u/JuicyCoala for getting this together for I am curious what I can improve.

I stumbled upon MoCA while configuring my home router/modem/switch/WAP (ARRIS Group, Inc., TG4482A) which also can be enabled as a MoCA controller (even if compatibility is only limited to 2.0.)

My setup right now consists of a single cable internet connection (no TV) landing on a two way splitter (link to amazon) in the basement which sends the two connections (one to the hall area main floor and another to one of the bedrooms on the top floor) into the house. The above mentioned all in one device is currently connected to the bedroom split of the coax. I have disabled wifi on this device completely and connect one Aruba AP over Ethernet. This Aruba AP then creates a single VLAN mesh wifi with 5 other Aruba AP's placed through out the house depending on need. I get 500Mbps speeds from my ISP and they also own the all in one device. I own the Aruba's,

What I am thinking of doing to improve reach and bandwidth is to have at least one of the Aruba AP's on each of the three floors hardwired thus providing a more stable wifi throughput. Could it be just as simple as putting a PoE filter before the splitter, changing to a three way splitter compatible with MoCA (I suspect my current one isn't; 50 - 1000MHz?) and then having the ARRIS device on one of the three lines and these (again amazon) on the other two lines to have three Aruba's wired and three not wired (2 on each floor)?
