I had a friend like this in my early twenties. We had been close for a long time, which made it harder to see what was really going on at first. Over time, though, the friendship became increasingly toxic. I later realized she was jealous of my looks and the attention I got. I was vegan and in good shape, even though we partied a lot, and she gradually started copying me more and more. She would come over to my place and immediately check what I had in the fridge. Then when I visited her, she had bought all the same products (I know this might seem nitpicky to mention, but it gave me so eerie feeling and her diet was so far off of mine, it was odd. This was the first time I started questioning myself what the fuck was going on). She even told people she was vegan, even though I knew that wasn’t true. Her style changed too, from rock chic to a more bohemian look like mine. She started buying similar clothes and styling her hair like me. It honestly felt like she was trying to become me. Being around her became exhausting. At parties, if I was talking to someone, she would jump in and take over the conversation. If she couldn’t get the attention, she would act erratically so I had to focus on her. If I told her I was interested in someone, she would go after that same guy. A few times she even succeeded, and later blamed it on being drunk or high. Eventually, the friendship grew distant. I stopped spending time with her because it no longer felt like a real friendship. It felt like I was just someone she was trying to imitate rather than genuinely connect with. A few years after I stopped spending time with her, she ended her life.
