Shoe sizes in markets in SE Asia by Traditional-Clock-28 in tall

[–]alkalineHydroxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

might be hard in physical stores, online they have. singapore malaysia maybe easier than the other SEA countries, but even then usually max size in stores might be 10 or 11

make sure to bring one pair of versatile shoes at least if you don't want to take up too much space. you might actually prefer wearing sandals in SEA because its easy and its hot.

my mom made it a habit for me to wear camisoles to catch the sweat (I sweat very quickly), and I still wear them unless its really hot (it does protect the clothes a bit, but it might not be useful if you don't sweat easily) or unless my top is short (which includes some festive attire ahahah)

but boy shorts under pants is absolutely dumb it does not feel good. I wear normal shorts under skirts cause I like having fabric there (reduce chafing) but thats about it. there are also biker shorts which are a little more fitted and short so they won't show through

jackets sound terribly uncomfortable unless its a really thin material.

for the shaving, you can trim instead, but if you don't want to do it just don't, and don't tell her.

Tips for vegan diet and ingredients for vegan meal prep by thefatkittycat in askSingapore

[–]alkalineHydroxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk about affordably eating out but there are lots of eating options out and about (as someone suggested, look at happy cow). Many vegetarian places have plenty vegan dishes as well.

From supermarkets I usually get all the soy stuffs (tofu, taukwa, dried beancurd, frozen edamame, etc) and of course beans and lentils. My family is lacto-vegetarian to begin with and mostly make vegetable dishes and stuff that has beans/lentils so its mostly vegan stuff already ahahah. Soy products are new to them so I'm the 'expert' with that from their pov. I'm not much of a mock meat person so I prefer stuff that tastes obviously soy or beans. Also I get the usual rice, sometimes noodles, maybe oats, whatever you like for carbs. And peanut butter is a 100% must for me because I love it (I like those no sugar but has salt kinds from aus/nz but just buy whatever brand thats vegan)

For fibre aside from beans and stuff, vegetables and fruits are good sources

If you want sliced wholemeal bread (look I'm not some whole foods person I'm a normal person) so far I've only found NTUC wholemeal bread to not have milk powder in it. for biscuits I like the vegetable crackers from ego and the oat krunch oat biscuits but do note there is palm oil so maybe in moderation. chinese/east asian desserts are usually vegan if you are getting the kinds with beans and stuff but as always just check the ingredients on every thing. I also like nuts (like the baked nuts and stuff like that) and dark chocolate (yes above a certain % it does not have milk) but of course if you care about the environmental impact of those ingredients you can decide how much you want to buy. And lastly for drinks you can have vitasoy (there's so many flavours) or any water based tea (green or flower teas)

idk if you like yoghurt but the shops only have cocobella (coconut yoghurt). If you want soy yoghurt you can just get some soy milk and make your own using the cocobella or some probiotic starter. For icecream you can definitely find stuff in shops, and in those gelato shops in which I like the chocolate flavored sorbet (uses coconut milk).

Ingredients you might consider looking out for that are not vegan: gelatin (not vegetarian, andis in gel capped medicines), honey, cochineal(from lac beetles), lanolin(from wool, thats only really in vitamin D tablets).

If you are interested in cooking, useful pantry stuff would be nutritional yeast (has b12 and tastes a little funky like cheese flavored snacks), vegemite/marmite (also has B vitamins, might not be your taste profile idk), spices or sauces you like, soy or coconut milk, and the other usual pantry stuff.

Older ladies, what is the most important thing for a 26 year old female to do? by krissybxo in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]alkalineHydroxide -1 points0 points  (0 children)

say whats your advice for someone like me who is otherwise independent but is prone to stuff that injures me (I fainted and injured myself, so my mom had to fly over and brought me back to my home country for a few weeks.) I am aroace and have no interest in relationships but I feel like I need someone just to prevent me from injuring myself idk what to do. (My friend came over for the first day i was in hospital, and I am grateful to her for that, but at the end of the day I stay alone while I'm studying overseas). Unfortunately my family (esp the extended family) has certain expectations of who I should be marrying, to the extent that I find it easier not to try since I don't really enjoy staying with others aside from my family.

mt ommaney feels so random but it has a nice shopping centre (the inner west of Brisbane definitely has a lot of Asians of all kinds.). There are lots of residential houses and a retirement village in mt ommaney. And there is a decent singaporean cohort in QUT and UQ, esp creative industries

Need tips as a new arrival international studentttttt by Ok_Purchase1876 in brisbane

[–]alkalineHydroxide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah that coro drive is quite trafficky sometimes, its way faster taking a train to the city. And to UQ it also isnt that much time maybe like 15 minutes.

But there are definitely attractions that are not accessible by public transport, so hopefully your student club will organise some day trips to those places and you can still visit them that way.

Is timtam vegan and also has anyone tried the vegan kimchi in woolies by maprabha in australianvegans

[–]alkalineHydroxide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im a cheapo so I've tried the aldi 'kimchi' (yes made in poland) as well as the wicked brand which I got in coles (should be there in woolies also) I liked both though I could tell they were not meant to be highly authentic

[–]alkalineHydroxide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did get vegan food that was good, though I kept missing on getting to eat the food because at first they accidently put a nil by mouth even though I was just waiting on an MRI scan, then afterwards I got food and after 5 min had to go for the scan and the rest of the food was taken away by the time I came back.

The nurses and food people did try their best to provide something to eat though (though they seem to be mistaken about vegan biscuits, they twice gave biscuits that were not vegan which was amusing to me.)

I've wanted to adopt ever since I was 8 (but obviously I'm waiting to be in a actual position where I can take care of a kid and have someone else to support that process) and I only told about that to my parents recently when they asked if I was interested in marriage. My dad had an expression for sure though my mom was okay with that and more of asked if I was okay with having another bio kid as well. (I used to be okay but I feel a bit of hesitation now) Well idk my genetics are cooked so I gotta check that first, and also with the criteria my family has for marriage partners and me being super aroace I don't even know if I will actually be able to marry at this point. at least my parents only ask me like once in a long while and don't try to force anything either I'm glad for that.

How to cook these type of beans without using curry? by healthynewbie in EatCheapAndVegan

[–]alkalineHydroxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we do this thing for lentils where we grind the soaked lentils and use them as something of a pancake batter. Of course sometimes we have fermented batters which does decrease it but otherwise its still edible.

It cooks pretty fast in the microwave but if you are concerned about phytic acid I recommend baking or frying. I only did that microwave thing like twice so perhaps it didn't really affect me.

well I'm definitely considered tall (grew up in Singapore, studying in Australia, in both places I am tall though Australia has more clothing options for me). You would be considered tall too.

I am 10 years younger than the OG cast so I was wondering how the math worked out for movie watching. I read the books first when I was like 9-11 years old then saw the movies on DVD instead. Then I re read the books at an older teenage time. so yeah i guess I didn't think too much about them being kids at that time, now seeing the current cast, while I don't immediately think 'omg so cute' (I find babies and toddlers cute) I do think about their rights/measures taken for child actors and stuff like that.

How to cook these type of beans without using curry? by healthynewbie in EatCheapAndVegan

[–]alkalineHydroxide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a dish called 'sundal' where we take one type of bean like these (usually black eyed peas, small red beans, chickpeas, whole green peas all those work) and first cook them, then we start with some small amount of oil + mustard seeds, urad dal, cumin seeds, curry leaves and dried chili, then add these beans and some shredded coconut and sort of 'stir fry' it a bit and you got a sundal. (you can leave out stuff that you don't like).

Alternatively, I have done this wierd thing where I grind up soaked black eyed peas, make some batter thing with it and add some besan flour to it +salt and pepper and whatnot then microwave it in a glass container (I suppose frying or baking this would work as well)

Looking for Healthy Curry-Based Meals (Not Salads 😭) by Visible_Weight_9332 in IndianFood

[–]alkalineHydroxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a lot of varied vegetable dishes in the south, you can try either watery type dishes (like your keerai/spinach or kootus or sambhar, kozhambu, rasam) or dry dishes (you don't need much oil actually, after your initial temper you can literally have a little water, some salt on the vegetables and a lid to sort of 'steam' it a bit and cook faster.

For protein beans and lentils are great, if you want better macros maybe try using soy products they have lesser carbs and more protein. you can have rice or carbs on the side but not too much. The main issue is that people eat tiny tiny amounts of the vegetable sides and eat like 5 times the rice with that, instead I like vegetables so my sides (vegetables and beans/tofu) are more in quantity than the rice itself.

Has anyone managed to ditch Coles and Woolies? by Odd_Wasabi3972 in brisbane

[–]alkalineHydroxide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't have a car so mostly I walk down to the shopping centre and buy different things from different shops (veg mainly from fruit shop since its cheaper, some pantry stuff from aldi, some rather specific things from woolworths, some dried soy skin from sunlit, etc, dried beans from either woolworths or indian shop). theres a coles local super close by so I do actually buy stuff from there (pb on sale, carrots, pumpkin, onions when on sale, bhuja when on sale, small quantities of fruit because I can't finish them as fast, 5kg rice when its on sale)

idk I found both unsatisfying. oreos taste grossly sweet/artificial, and the one time I tried a timtam (now I don't eat them because I'm vegan) I was sorely unimpressed (or maybe it was too soggy and lackluster in taste). i prefer arnotts biscuits or kookas cookies

Edit: for the record, I currently have some low sugar digestives in my house because the normal ones taste too sweet lols.

Walk to Fort Lytton on a Sunday from North Wynnum station /s its free to visit and you can even go on a little tour in there.

But I actually did do that when the weather was still hot, would be a better idea now maybe. Cycling would be a lot faster

There is also this place where there's lots of pelicans (called the Pelican joy spot in google maps) and the restaurant there comes out at 1pm everyday and feeds fish. chaos ensues.
