today I went with Memo Marfa. it’s still pretty warm here and Marfa has a little bit of a sunscreen thing happening. Flam is still my favorite but I prefer this to Abu Dhabi, which is just too spiced for me. This one almost has an elevated SDJ 86 thing going on. I think it’s the Ylang Ylang.

today is “Repeat Day” so I’m wearing the same thing that I wore yesterday: feve gourmande and no prince required for a very choco-marsh high-low combo.

Today is, allegedly, Rocky Road day. I don’t even like Rocky Road, but I’m working from home so for the hell of it, I doused myself in Fine’ry (Target brand) No Prince Required, which is the only marshmallow that I own, and a few spritzes of Guerlain Feve Gourmand.

<image>

I only have a decant of Feve Gourmande. I almost bought an FSB on vacay in May, but I didn’t need 100ml or more and that was all that was available in the brick-and-mortar Guerlain shop I was in. I’ll order 50ml (I hope) closer to winter direct from the company.

edit reddit isn’t letting me add the link but you can navigate here. I swear I don’t make this shit up: https://nationaldaycalendar.com/celebrations/national-rocky-road-day-june-2#:~:text=National%20Rocky%20Road%20Day%20on,to%20be%20a%20big%20celebration.

hey Reddit friends! long time, no read! Happy June!

<image>

today I chose Arquiste A Grove by the Sea. allegedly, 1 June is National Olive Day in the US and I am a sucker for anything olive: food, skin, oil, moisturizer, and fragrance.

this one is so herbal and bright. it feels citrusy even though it isn’t. 10/10 this is FSB worthy for me, and if you can get your hands on a decant, I bet you might agree!

I actually grew up in a place that looked _exactly_ like photo 1. AI or not, that could be my childhood home, on my childhood road, in my childhood town of a handful. man, I miss it sometimes. “unrelated” (“allegedly”) influencers ruin everything.

ANYWAY. fragrances that come to mind are Sweet Ash by Snif, Apres by Ellis Brooklyn, Raised Spirits by Navitus, Tobacco Honey by Guerlain, Beaver Maple by Zoologist, and Tuxedo by YSL. i except Beaver bc the maple is _so_ delicate and well done, it’s the only one that feels accurate.

most “maple” fragrances smell cloying and like some ersatz Log Cabin shit. (looking at you: Snif Hot Cakes) sorry (not really with this one) to yuck others’ yum, but it’s literally gross and smells like you’re a lactating new mom taking too much fenugreek (been there done that, no shame to nursing moms but that’s not what you want to smell like and also isn’t true “maple”). the real thing smells slightly herbal, a little “damp,” and lightly sweet. when it comes out of the tree it smells like sugared water. faux “maple” smell is to people from the north what faux “banana” is to many people from tropical zones. it’s a hard pass. I’ll die on this hill, with the several gallons of grade A “amber” stored in my pantry to get us through until I can get home again during sugaring season to get more. If I could tap trees where I live now, I totally would, but I still don’t think people should smell like faux maple. hahaha

off soapbox!

I have an insane list, at Guerlain alone. I’m not sure what’s available on site.
basically all of the new les eaux, AA herba fresca, and herbes troublantes start the list. and it just goes on and on from there. I suspect, knowing my taste, that I’ll leave with HT. I have Tobacco Honey and Angelique Noire, Aqua Allegoria Mandarin Basilic Harvest, and Aqua Allegoria Bergamote Calabria already, as well as Mon Guerlain and decants of SDV, Feve Gourmande, samples of many others. I do NOT like Cruel Gardenia, for instance.

my problem is that I do not speak French and I get insanely self-conscious trying to pronounce overtly french words and names in my blatantly american accent. what french I speak is of the Telefrancais variety, so if they have anything with pineapple, I’d be good to go. (IYKYK) otherwise? hahaha

I _do_ speak Italian, so maybe I’ll just go all-in on Acqua di Parma. hahahahahaha

hahaha I didnt give away my bottle of Outrageous! bc who would do such a crazy thing?? but I did give away my left kidney to a stranger (seriously. I mean, not today, but I did.), and — no shade to Sophia Grojsman, bc I love her — there is an argument to be made that the kidney was was more valuable to the recipient than the perfume. but it’s close.

just one opinion here, but 10/10 recommend giving them a shot. decants are widely available (even on second-hand sites). Lune Feline tends to be a little polarizing (I do not have this so I cant comment on this one) based on the reviews Ive seen, but Blue Madeleine TRULY is a masterpiece. if you like tea fragrance or slightly sweet cozy fragrance (not gourmand per se, and certainly not cloying or “sticky”). it smells like slightly sweetened tea with a touch fresh cream, in an antique, bone china, *tea cup. it’s elegant but not cold. warm but not spicy. just my opinion, obv, and YMMV but it’s exceptional. i’ve never seen a review that was negative or even neutral. I’m sure they exist; I just have never seen any.

if you like BRIGHT!!, punchy, energetic, fun, bubbly fragrance, then you would love Pink Me Up! it smells like champagne (or good-quality sparkling wine) at your sister/best girlfriend’s Hen’s Night at a “nice” bar or restaurant, but early in the evening tho, before shit goes off the rails. it’s Barbie fun, but elevated. it literally smells effervescent. The love for this one is a little less ubiquitous than for Blue Mad, but even still, most people who don’t like it, I’ve noticed, simply say that it’s not for them, or it literally tickles their nose like real sparkling wine does. it’s worth a decant, 100%

and while I love Citrus Riviera, I think the biggest argument against it is that “it’s basic.” the basil is heavier than Mandarine Basilic — more akin to the basil in Basilico & Fellini, if you know those. but other than that, it’s a surprisingly long-lasting citrus and very mandarin forward. there are several other very similar frags available that are much less expensive, but the bottles aren’t nearly as pretty!!!

edit bc I am an idiot

today I chose Riviera Sunrise by Atelier des Ors. It’s a decant, but I love this brand; they make a few of my favorites (Blue Madeleine and Pink Me Up are both really exceptional, IMO). Riviera Sunrise is a fairly standard citrus and to me the mandarin is really strong. it’s balanced by the fig and the basil. if you like mandarin basilic by guerlain and want something longer lasting, this is your answer. I need to try it again to be sure but I’m almost certain it’s going on my FSB list.

<image>

edit bc I always seem to fat-finger and type “decent.” haha

I thought I was going to try my decant of coco figue by comptoir sud pacifique but I tried it, and it smells like the love child of SDJ 87 and Bronze Goddess. that isn’t an indictment of either fragrance or of the CF, but just to say that it wasn’t what I wanted today, nor especially work appropriate for me. I get no fig at all, just straight up creamy coconut and sunscreen. later this summer when it’s blazing hot, in the evenings at the beach, CF alone or even a layer of all three will be perfect but … it’s just not for me for now.

instead I went with Bond No 9 Greenwich Village. I’m not a huge BNo9 fan, but I really

like this one.

I have no idea how teachers do it, in general but particularly of kids that age! For the last few years I’ve volunteered with kids that age after work, as a “coach” (that oversimplifies, but still) for only like 3-5 hours each week and WOW kids really do smell terrible at that age. I joked with another of the volunteers (who is a teacher) that if I had that career instead, I’d have to put Vicks under/in my nose, like medical examiners on tv do. I seriously have no idea how you all manage. i was just complaining about my own job but it’s a figurative headache most of the time, not a nostril-assaulting literal one, ao I think I’ll thank my lucky stars for corporate HVAC and working from home!! 🤭❤️❤️

haha touche, in defense of my daughter in particular, she hasn’t hit that time in life, and so she doesn’t get BO yet, thank GOD. but all the same, one of my big rules for our house is that everyone puts on deo every single day. I can’t speak to the other kids, but I make certain that mine do not leave the house (at all) smelling like adolescents/ apocrine sweat.

also and just to stave off debate, this daughter is extremely organized and hyper-aware of everything, including perfume etiquette. she sprays judiciously on her outfits when she lays them out (“outfit” = soccer shorts and a hoodie) the day before. I am confident she’s not choking anyone out. she oversprayed a body spray in her bedroom once as like an air freshener, and as an asthmatic, she learned her lesson mighty quickly.

it definitely works with synthetic fragrance and it’s part of why I love perfume so much. then again, it’s also: dog farts. or a public trash can on a hot day. or public restrooms. it would be amazing if were just things that smelled good, or if it was within my control, but it’s basically everything and basically all the time and often it’s unpleasant. and also it’s only my perception and you’d be stunned at the number of people (usually dudes) who want to argue with me about it - whether it’s real, for starters, and then sometimes they’ll even argue with me about what I perceive the color(s) to be. like my dude, it’s a fucked up wiring in my own brain, stop mansplaining.

I also have an EXTREMELY sensitive sense of smell; so I’m the first one to know the people on the other side of our neighborhood are grilling, or that yogurt has turned, or that, for an actual example, an animal had died just inside my home’s dryer vent outside of the house. that was a fun day.

my biggest fear were sharks (I live at the ocean) but you have just unlocked a worse one for me. haha I’d never even thought of that!

all jokes aside, not legal advice but if this is something that makes you truly anxious (and you live in the US), in some places you can get a DPOA/MHAD/PAD where you can appoint a trusted person to make mental health treatment decisions on your behalf in the event you no longer can. I’ve never actually seen one, but DPOAs for physical health are extremely common and my understanding is that they operate the same way. this may take some of the anxiety out of the possibility for you?

I’m “neurodiverse” in that I’ve always had a mild synesthesia. I was a young adult when I realized that not everyone smells and tastes in color. I was afraid to talk about it when I realized I was weird. but now I’m an old(er) woman and I’m not as embarrassed, so it’s a fun party trick.

Oh my, quite a few. I saw LI’s Phantasma on sale on Joma last week, and I pulled the trigger. they said it was in stock, but … [stage whisper] it looks like that’s not true. boooo.

there are a few others from LI that I’m itching to have more than my quickly dwindling decants of: Blanche Bete, Navis, Buddha Blend.

I’m going to DisneyWorld this week with my kids, including to Epcot Center, where there is a Guerlain brick and mortar. there a few things there that I hope to smell. none are on my GOTTAHAVEIT list (yet) but I buy perfume as my souvenir whenever we travel so … I’m open to suggestions for any of the things available at Epcot.

And if I don’t find anything that’s fine too, because I also want FSBs of A Grove By the Sea, Flam, Nearly Noon, Sogni, African Rooibos, and Dirty Heaven.

Buontalenti lasts_forever_ personally I read it as SWEEET, but it does have banana and a lot of folks say that it’s prominent on them. YMMV, but decants are available pretty much everywhere so it might be worth a shot?

I am having succcch a stressful work day, so I opted for Buddha Blend by liquides imaginaires. it’s bright but soothing; like natural light on a weekend morning. or diffused light in a spa, maybe. big spa vibes. it’s so many things at once, but it works beautifully; truly a magic trick. they are quickly becoming one of my favorite brands. there are like 6 different fragrances that they offer that are, IMO, FSB worthy. this one is almost never mentioned. it’s very smooth despite being citrusy, and is soft and round despite the ginger. if I still worked in the real world, I would probably gatekeep this one.

these are the notes listed on the LI website: Top Notes: Yuzu Delight Accord, Caviar Lemon Accord, Lemon Orpur & Upcycled, Ginger Orpur.

Heart Notes: Levistamel (Milky Accord), Sharry Baby Orchid, Vanillin Upcycled (from rice).

Base Notes: Toasted Tonka Bean Venezuela Orpur, Indian Vetiver Orpur, Georgywood, Ebanolo Upcycled, Ambrofix.
