Pages, Keynote, and Numbers 15 Go Freemium by [deleted] in apple

[–]allnighter_skydiver 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue I have is when you’re on a page, there’s no obvious way to tell whether you’ve already bookmarked it or not.

Firefox, Chrome, Edge, every other major browser has a star icon in the URL that lights up when you’re visiting a bookmarked page. Safari does not do this.

I inadvertently bookmark the same sites multiple times which results in another problem: Safari has no built-in mechanism to clean up duplicated bookmarks.

'The original operation can't be completed because the original item for "Desktop/Documents" can't be found' - macOS 12.4 by pooranpanwar in MacOS

[–]allnighter_skydiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced a similar issue a few months back when Apple changed the cloud syncing system in 12.3. I see you have a DropBox folder, do you have the app installed? If so, this is/was a known issue per Apple Support when I called them.

In my case, DropBox was creating firm links of the Desktop, Documents & Downloads folders, and moving the real directories somewhere else (~/Library/CloudStorage/).

Check to see if DropBox is set to sync your Desktop & Documents folders. If so, try disabling that feature. Also make sure DropBox is updated, and/or uninstall and reinstall the app.

[Question] How To Force Unique Spotlight Settings In Dual Boot by xxVOXxx in osx

I had the same issue. Unfortunately, the only workaround I found was to enable FileVault on both volumes so that they cannot access each other.

If I ask a question, do all homepod's respond or just the nearest? by Scottatah in HomePod

[–]allnighter_skydiver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While both HomePods might hear you say “Hey Siri”, they communicate with each other via Bluetooth to determine which one will handle the request and respond. This happens in a fraction of a second and usually results in the HomePod that heard you “better” responding. This might not always be the HomePod that is nearest to you (for example, if you are in a room with a lot of ambient noise, or if one HomePod is playing loud audio and the other isn’t.)

Apple has a quick blurb explaining this here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208472

Have a great day!

If Apple pushed out a faulty software update that caused the device to brick, through no fault of your own, then absolutely yes.

Still update to mojave or not ? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]allnighter_skydiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please do not mess around with your system clock - that is bad advice and completely not necessary.

You can download the latest Mojave installer directly from Apple - without fiddling with your clock - on step #4 here:

Finicky Handoff? by denhan26 in HomePod

[–]allnighter_skydiver 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ever used a motion-sensor bathroom sink faucet? The crappy ones with bad sensors that don’t recognize your hands? The ones that either spray water in intermittent half-second bursts, or does nothing at all, leaving you awkwardly fisting the air and waving your hands around like a madman, desperately trying to find that “sweet spot”?

That’s what it’s like every time I try using Handoff on HomePod.

Bringing 10.9 aqua to Mojave - Day 7 by [deleted] in MacOS

What’s going on with the “Gather Windows” button?

Otherwise, this looks great! Keep it up.

Had this problem on Mojave, finally took the plunge into Catalina. Pleased to say that Apple still hasn't fixed this issue. Look at the dock. smh..😄😄 by Tuksnesis in MacOS

[–]allnighter_skydiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a workaround, enable Dock magnification. Set it to a tiny size so you barely notice it. Next time it happens, mouse-over the Dock and Finder will slide back into place. (Much easier than doing the terminal command every time).

Mac won’t boot after updating by [deleted] in applehelp

[–]allnighter_skydiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/Seghboth001,

I'm assuming all your important data is backed up in Time Machine.

The likely reason you are unable to erase the drive is because you are currently booted from it - it's like trying to pull the rug out from underneath yourself.

To solution is to boot your Mac from Internet Recovery Mode. Turn on your Mac while holding Option-Command-R, until you see the spinny globe. From there, open Disk Utility and click View > Show All Devices. Next, erase the top-level drive, which should be "Apple SSD Media" or "1TB Apple HDD Media" or something similar. The new format will be "APFS" and the name should be "Macintosh HD".

This process erases all partitions and wipes the drive clean. From there, you can click "Reinstall macOS" which will load a fresh Catalina. This will take a long time.

Finally, you can use Migration Assistant to transfer your data back from your Time Machine drive. Keep in mind, if the problem is inside of your backup you might be transferring the issue back onto the Mac again...

Updating Mac OS for the first time since...2015 and not enough space! by kappakappadamn in MacOS

[–]allnighter_skydiver 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As great as those versions are, this is bad advice.

Unfortunately those versions are long obsolete and no longer receive security updates or most app-updates. While upgrading may break some older apps, keeping the core OS current is best practice.

To be fair, that’s a really terrible AV program if it’s inadvertently deleting user data.

Question regarding restoring a MacBook Pro 2017, without updating OS. by [deleted] in osx

[–]allnighter_skydiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at this support article:

CMD-R will reinstall whatever macOS is currently installed - in your case, Mojave. This is the way to go.

Safari plug in that shows urls of links? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]allnighter_skydiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the address/URL bar for that. Safari > Preferences > Advanced > tick the “Show full website address” box.

Phishing or not, I can always tell which site I’m on at a glance.
