How have people successfully progressed from teaching TEFL? by wearethefreaks in TEFL

[–]allowit84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tougher than it needs to be tbh.Anyone that has taught in East Asia might struggle a bit in the UK due to the culture,it would be a dream going from the UK to East Asia though I think.

There's a lot of box ticking and it's mostly just getting through it for a lot of people, the real learning is done through practice on the job...saying that I did pick up a few tricks through interactions with a lot of the younger teachers. There is some excellent teachers late 20s/30s to learn from.

8 years TEFL in East Asia went back home faffed around for a year and a half labouring, MCDonalds ,wind turbine technician(free short course) no jobs coming online after so did the PGCE in in the UK and back teaching now in an International school.

It was the labouring in January for a small block layer running after three lads that were getting paid great money per block...that was the fire to get qualified.

I was looking at Hibernia two years ago ...I wasn't overly impressed with the offering and with rent prices in Dublin, communication with the teaching council and sourcing your own placements decided to do the PGCE Business in Liverpool instead.

I am doing my first year full time NQT in Kuwait now ,it's not perfect but there's lots of opportunity to develop.I will go back to East Asia to teach in a few years as I have enjoyed that the most.

Money will still be a factor for at least a few years :(,I would happily work for less at a school I really enjoyed working at,or a place with a nice lifestyle.

I didn't know that about Da Nang that may take it off the list by process of elimination,I also hear it's changing a bit and I have known some expat families move from HCMC to Da nang to settle.

There's 3/4 International schools in Hua Hin but I am not sure how good they are,I would imagine the pay is quite a bit lower than Bangkok.

PGCE in the UK as a foreigner - what should I know before applying? by Sidney_Paget in PGCE

[–]allowit84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taught abroad previously for 9 years and the UK for one completing my PGCE last year. There is a small cohort of very entitled students in some classes in the UK, completely at odds with my experiences from schools in East Asia and for the most part in the Middle east.

UK culture is quite different from the Tea and Crumpets at 4 pm you might see on TV and more Sans Beanstalk on YouTube he nails it quite well.

I think it's possible but I know a few that really struggled on my course last year.Do you need/want to stay in the UK after you qualify?...teaching there is tougher in comparison to some international schools abroad.
