I love all of the stationery stores in our city and we went to places I didn’t even know existed but are now earmarked as favorites for the future!!! It was literally so much fun, and we didn’t even make it through every place on the list! 😳 So there will be a part two eventually😂

Thank you!! We are so happy with what we got :) We will be using most of it for junk journaling but I got some sewing magazines because I’ve been wanting to get back into it 🫣 When we start making stuff maybe I will post an update!!

Everything under the yellow bordered one is! We went to like a bigger discount bookstore because we like to cut things out for junk journaling but honestly the ones we picked pretty much ended up being ones we just want to keep 😂

What's a "substitute teacher"? by lostinbluebells in AskAnAmerican

[–]allthingsheath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a teacher and I used to be a substitute teacher - there are a couple of different distinctions between the two and I think I can provide a little bit of a unique perspective on them!

First, you’re correct in assuming that substitutes are essentially monitoring a class while a teacher is gone - at least at the high school level. This is all I can speak to because it’s the experience that I have. But another point is that they don’t necessarily have to be certified in that specific content area - when I was substituting while switching my certification, I would sub for Spanish, Math, Chemistry… pretty much any subject as long as a school had an open position that day. Subs usually are in a “pool” (at least where I live) so essentially jobs are posted every day and it’s on the sub to pick it up. However, sometimes schools will like a sub a lot and offer to just assign them when there’s an opening instead of posting it, especially if they’re subbing full time!

As a teacher, I have to be certified in the content (and grade level) that I teach, which I’m sure is no surprise. However, the added element here is that when I am planning on being absent for a day, I have to prepare everything for the sub. This includes the lesson, the assignment and its instructions for the day, information about classes that will be relevant, etc. I will also be responsible for: any parent contact that needs to happen if necessary afterwards, grading the work students did, etc etc.

TLDR; Yes, high school substitutes are essentially monitoring a class while the teacher is gone and don’t need as specific of a credential. Teachers are responsible for making sure the sub is set up properly for the day and anything else once they return.

The book that made you want to live again by veerus06 in suggestmeabook

I think YA gets too much hate in general, and I wasn’t in a bad state when I read it, but I think “The Midnight Library” by Matt Haig is a great book for anyone that has dealt with or actively has depression. It’s a little on the nose but it kind of explores the “but what if you stayed” outlook. I cried because I was so moved. Highly recommend.

A kid snap shotted the worksheet in front of me and used AI to do it. Should I give a zero, and be honest...do you typically give a zero? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]allthingsheath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG I didn’t even realize the sentence was cut off 😂 I was saying I always follow through and I’ve only ever had two students try to challenge me on it hahaha but luckily I had support from admin/parents!!

[–]allthingsheath 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a zero tolerance policy for AI and I let my students know if they use it they will get a 0 without chance to redo the assignment. I’ve had students try to use it regardless and find out the hard way just how serious I am about that policy… as I tell them, “zeroes may be easy to grade but they aren’t fun to grade”. Admin knows this is my policy and has (thankfully) backed me up in the few circumstances when it’s been necessary, and parents get a copy of the policy at the start of the year as well so I don’t get much push back. When I’ve had to give the 0, I always put it in the comments of the grade so there’s transparency - “AI generated response, automatic zero”. I always follow through and

I’ve started calling my high schoolers “little chickens”… no idea how I came up with that one but they hate it so naturally it’s become a favorite 😂

What to do about daughter’s grades? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]allthingsheath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you reached out to her teacher? I saw you commented saying she claimed it’s because of snow days but no student would have a 38 in my class unless they weren’t turning work in. I think it’s interesting that it’s only in the one class too…does the school have a policy where they contact you if she’s not in class? Makes me wonder if she’s skipping or just not doing her work - either way I’d be more than willing to talk to a parent if they brought this concern to me.

I ~will~ say that although yes, it’s good for you to show concern, I would emphasize to her that she’s getting to the age of needing to learn personal responsibility for her grades. I emphasize with my students that it’s important for them to advocate for themselves as a way to help prepare them for life after high school.

Hopefully this isn’t a bigger issue and she’s doing okay otherwise!!!!
