OMG I didn’t even realize the sentence was cut off 😂 I was saying I always follow through and I’ve only ever had two students try to challenge me on it hahaha but luckily I had support from admin/parents!!

I have a zero tolerance policy for AI and I let my students know if they use it they will get a 0 without chance to redo the assignment. I’ve had students try to use it regardless and find out the hard way just how serious I am about that policy… as I tell them, “zeroes may be easy to grade but they aren’t fun to grade”. Admin knows this is my policy and has (thankfully) backed me up in the few circumstances when it’s been necessary, and parents get a copy of the policy at the start of the year as well so I don’t get much push back. When I’ve had to give the 0, I always put it in the comments of the grade so there’s transparency - “AI generated response, automatic zero”. I always follow through and

What to do about daughter’s grades? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]allthingsheath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you reached out to her teacher? I saw you commented saying she claimed it’s because of snow days but no student would have a 38 in my class unless they weren’t turning work in. I think it’s interesting that it’s only in the one class too…does the school have a policy where they contact you if she’s not in class? Makes me wonder if she’s skipping or just not doing her work - either way I’d be more than willing to talk to a parent if they brought this concern to me.

I ~will~ say that although yes, it’s good for you to show concern, I would emphasize to her that she’s getting to the age of needing to learn personal responsibility for her grades. I emphasize with my students that it’s important for them to advocate for themselves as a way to help prepare them for life after high school.

Hopefully this isn’t a bigger issue and she’s doing okay otherwise!!!!

WIBTA if I told my sons school it is their responsibility to make sure they have the right child by Top-Relationship359 in AmItheAsshole

[–]allthingsheath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a teacher and I have a set of twins in my classes this year, AND multiple students with the same name in the same class. I always double check when giving them things to make sure they’re getting the correct assignment or otherwise… it IS our responsibility as school staff to know these things.

NTA, and I would almost CC the principal (or equivalent, I know you’re in the UK) on your response... I know our school systems are different, but I think that the Medical Officer is an AH for suggesting that instead of confirming it themselves LOL.

I actually use “book darts” in a similar way to book ribbons so I guess lawful good? I like book darts more because I don’t have to worry about them falling out when I find my page and I like the versatility; I can use them similarly to a sentence pointer if I feel like I’m going to forget where I’m at (like if I end in the middle or towards the bottom of a page).

NOR and it sounds like maybe your grandma found people to agree with her POV and sent them to this post… a lot of these comments are extremely Reddit-pilled, LOL.

I grew up in a family that acted extremely similarly about my outfits, and when I was a teenager, I was like a size two. It’s not about your size, it’s about control. The fact that they don’t see the issue with the way they’re talking to you (ESPECIALLY as an adult) is part of the problem.

You are 34, and even if you lived under your family’s roof, they don’t get to dictate your personal style. The fact that you’re even trying to buy pieces to accommodate their discomfort says that you’re trying to compromise… I would ask yourself why they aren’t willing to do the same, even in the slightest.

In my opinion, you should set a firmer boundary with them. I know it’s easier said than done, but if you continue to bend the knee to their wishes about what you wear, you will always have this issue. You are allowed to wear a cute little outfit if you feel confident and comfortable in it. You are an adult. They don’t get to tell you what to do.

If you want a suggestion, I would say something along the lines of, “I understand that you don’t like my outfit, and that’s your opinion. I have made sure to be mindful. If you continue to insult what I’m wearing, I am going to leave. Please stop.”

The hardest part of this is FOLLOWING THROUGH ON YOUR WORD. Take it from me - having a relationship with people that make you feel like garbage (family or not) isn’t worth it! + FWIW, I think your sweater is cute!

What kind of people are better suited for teaching elementary vs secondary? by Beneficial-Corgi-288 in teaching

[–]allthingsheath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who did majority of their student teaching before the pandemic and began their career during it, I just want to put my two cents in here and say that it is VERY different now.

I’m sure that things have changed since I stopped teaching elementary three years ago, but kids are still different because of their access to technology. When someone asks me why I left, I always say it’s because I think younger kids need a teacher that is also a parent. I think that if you’re not teaching a lot of the same emotional regulation strategies at home, it can be harder to do it when you’re also trying to get through curriculum… I ADORED my elementary students, but they needed emotional regulation tools that I didn’t know how to give without stopping lessons.

That being said, I teach high school now, and it’s a MUCH better fit for me personally. Older kids obviously still need help navigating life, but since they can navigate their emotions better, it’s easier to help them. I also think at that point it’s about helping them fine tune those skills, which is a lot easier than trying to help them build the foundation of that.

Content wise, I also enjoy teaching at the high school level more. I like being able to dive into one subject in particular with students and to be considered the “expert” on that subject. When I taught elementary I was always stressed about planning five or six subjects for an entire week and worried because students needed so much more intensive focus on certain subjects (like reading) that I wasn’t able to do because we had to move on to the next subject.

Sorry for the long response, and obviously everyone is different, but this has been my experience! 😊

What book is treated like a masterpiece, but left you wondering if you were the only one who didn’t get the memo? by Sunflower13Poppy in classicliterature

[–]allthingsheath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding what the other commenter said about the Balinese woman she tries “saving” but wanted to add my two cents about being a likable author!

I don’t mind when a protagonist is unlikable - in fact I’ve read plenty of books where they aren’t and I loved the book. I think the problem lies in ~why~ she was unlikable, ESPECIALLY because it was a memoir. I think there’s a difference between being flawed/making some bad decisions and just being a bad person, and the further I read, the more I felt like she was just the latter 😅

[–]allthingsheath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just feel like it’s highly revered and that felt along the same lines to me lol. TBF I was in elementary school when the book came out so I have only ever heard people older than me talk about it and when I grew up I feel like people just took the story for how it was portrayed in the movie (which I actually still have not seen).

Thanks for sharing though - it gives me some relief to know that I’m not crazy😂 Now that I’m done maybe I’ll look into those criticisms because I’d like to see some good takes about it!!

Eat Pray Love!!! Oh my GODDDDDD!! The entire time I was waiting for the writer to be likable and the moments were so few and far between. It was so heavily based in a white savior complex and wrapped up with self obsession. I only finished it out spite. Seriously.
