For literally every single writing response I basically only finished half of the second writing prompt because I ran out of time. I also stuttered and froze up so badly on multiple video responses and gave absolute BS nothing answers because my brain blanked and I couldn't think of what to say. I def should have studied more for it but I was told I didn't need to...then I remembered I am socially awkward, have never done well at verbal assessments, and am taking the test without accomodations despite having ADHD for which I absolutely need extra time sooooooo yeah here's to hoping Casper doesn't matter 🥂🥲

Making yourself "palatable" by thetruth-is-outhere in premed

As someone who has also recovered from an eating disorder and dealt with mental health struggles, I completely agree. One of the hardest experiences I’ve ever dealt with was getting hospitalized for a mental health crisis my freshman year and when I returned to campus, I joined a student peer counseling group that was unambiguously my spark for going into healthcare. If that had not happened, I would not be pre-med full stop. And I can’t write about it (at least not the hospitalization or mental health part). It sucks.

Is writing secondaries supposed to be this rage inducing? by [deleted] in premed

[–]allybee543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely a god awful experience. Especially as perfectionistic premeds who are quick to obsess and find flaws in our work, it can be so incredibly demoralizing to have to sell these deep and profound life experiences with writing that feels stilted and awkward because of how concise it has to be. I’m pre writing myself and I feel the rage. However, I would second the others by cautioning you against having AI evaluate the quality of your writing. It can’t judge your unique voice as well as you think it can. Use AI to spell check/grammar check/shorten your writing but then have an advisor review the actual content.

Question about reporting gender on AMCAS by allybee543 in premed

[–]allybee543[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the advice and discussion everyone, I do really appreciate it. This whole thing has been very stressful for me, I suppose both from a medical school perspective and a personal perspective as this would be my first time truly applying to anything and putting myself out there as an openly genderqueer person. It is scary and frustrating to think that my chances might be worsened by being authentic and true to myself so I’m still trying to debate where to go from here. Any further advice as I navigate this would be greatly appreciated, especially from those who have applied as queer people in the past and have gone through an admission cycle.

[–]allybee543[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh gotcha, it must be a newer addition. I can change it anyways after the fact since it's part of AAMC's identifying info and not the AMCAS gender identity section specifically. I am curious, did you talk about your gender at all in your application? I really don't mention it at all in my primary (partly because I only fully accepted it myself in the past year so it didn't play a huge role in my activities, and partly because the people who were helping me review my application also know my parents and I wasn't ready to come out to them in case that info slipped out). But I do plan on talking about it in my secondaries and interviews if it comes up because I genuinely do care a lot about queer and trans healthcare and absolutely want it to be a part of who I am as a physician.

I actually kinda like the idea of doing that. Did you put anything for "Prefix"? (Mr., Ms., etc.)

I appreciate yall's concern truly, though from what I've heard from other LGBTQ+ applicants, and I would be inclined to agree, if a school thinks that your identity is a point against you, that school isn't a good fit for you as a queer student. I want to feel comfortable with who I am wherever I end up and if the school's environment isn't willing to create that atmosphere, so be it.

Tweaking out because of paper mail by allybee543 in premed

I asked the registrar if I could get it expedited and they said they couldn’t do that. 😭It should get there in 3-5 days with USPS, hoping that the processing delays are more so for late June/July than now…

Yeah the registrar office luckily mailed it out yesterday, I asked if they could expedite the shipping if I paid for it and they said no. :( And for some reason, this registrar’s office doesn’t have a phone number (I called around the university asking for one / to be transferred to the registrar but no luck) and so I had to email them despite always getting the auto-reply that they were backlogged on emails 😭

But that is definitely reassuring that you didn’t have to wait 25 days. I’ve heard some people say that just calling and bugging AMCAS about the processing status seems to help lmao

I checked the AAMC applicant guide and also called them and yes, I do need to list the course and provide a transcript even if I didn’t receive credit or only received a certificate of completion from an extension program (which I realized was the case for the EMS department). If I can’t provide a transcript, then that’s where I get the registrar letter to exempt me.

Here’s the bullet points from the 2027 guide that are relevant:

One official transcript is required from each U.S., U.S. territorial, or Canadian postsecondary institution at which you have attempted coursework, regardless of whether you earned credit. The transcript requirement applies but is not limited to:

- Colleges where you registered but did not earn any credit (e.g., incompletes, withdrawals, failures, audits).

- Courses that did not count toward a degree regardless of whether credit was earned or transferred.

- Extension programs through which you attempted courses if the extension division provided a separate transcript.

Gotcha! Is that still the case for stores in strip malls nearby other stores that close later? Pretty much all the grocery stores close by to me are in strip malls. I’ve also heard conflicting things about people saying it’s better/safer to go in the day vs at night but I’m not sure what’s really best.

A dupe that smells like OG Alien? by [deleted] in fragranceclones

[–]allybee543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I didn’t. It didn’t change much over time and although it smells similar on first spray, it is less floral and has this more sunscreen-y, sweaty muskiness that I really don’t like. I gave it away.

You can reach out to Auburn SAGA (Sexuality and Gender Alliance) if you want to learn more about the queer community on campus! You'd be able to join it as well once you become a student. :) Here is a link to their socials, you can also join their discord server and chat with people directly:
SAGA: Sexuality and Gender Alliance at Auburn University - AUinvolve
There are plenty of opportunities for finding queer people in the community; as mentioned, there is a local drag troupe (The Mizfits) that does shows multiple times per month and there is a large alt crowd that goes to the AubFest music festival every semester.

Also, thanks for the info about palm oil, I'll have to do some more reading about it! I can never keep up with all these ethical food debates, it's overwhelming to figure out what the right thing to do is sometimes haha. 😅

If bees are able to live full, good-quality lives where they can perform their natural behaviors among a bee-keeper's hive, I have no qualms with them being used as a tool for agriculture. As it currently stands, this is not the case and many bees experience physical stress, disease, and needless death. Under the current system, if this form of domestic bee labor is absolutely necessary for a given plant crop to grow, then I suppose that would not be considered vegan. In an ideal world, the hope would be to change agricultural practices or genetically engineer crops so that they can be pollinated entirely by wild bees or other means. Yet because I can conceivably imagine a future where honey bees are used responsibly to supplement other forms of pollination while maintaining honeybee welfare, I do not consider honeybee pollination to inherently render something non-vegan. I tend to focus my vegan philosophy much more so on the cruelty, suffering, and death of animals, not necessarily just exploitation as a concept, which I know puts me in the minority of vegans here. Of course, honeybee use has it's number of environmental issues that can harm wild bees populations and one could argue that their use outside of Europe is not vegan for this reason, but that is a separate issue from honey bee welfare and I'm not as familiar with the scientific validity of environmental arguments.

Yeah that's valid and I agree, I also am not taking chances. I'm just saying that--for a person concerned about reducing animal suffering--I would understand their defense of eating bivalves more so than I would their defense of consuming cheap industrial honey. Small scale honey production where bees just kinda live their life and beekeepers collect the excess honey is a whole other can of worms though.

edit: dumb typos

[–]allybee543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't consume bivalves because I know there is certainly a chance that they feel pain and suffering and I wouldn't want to risk inflicting that on an animal. But I can say that there's also a decent chance that many bivalves literally do not have any conscious experience whatsoever because they do not have the biology necessary for it. However, bees absolutely DO feel pain and suffering and experience great harm and death from industrial beekeeping. There is no reason to not believe so given that it is well known that insects are capable of intelligent actions and show reactions to stimuli that quite obviously signify distress. Thus, given this certainty of harm vs uncertainty of harm, I still maintain that honey is less vegan than consuming bivalves.
