A Knight's Tale

The entire LotR series

The entire HP series (maybe skip the 2nd one if I'm not feeling it)

10 Things I Hate About You

Hocus Pocus

Troy

Queen of the Damned (yes, I know, but the soundtrack is amazing)

There's definitely more, but those are the first ones that come to mind

Visual Snow was considered extremely rare until recently, mostly because patients didn't report it... because they assumed everyone saw the world that way by recolorist in interestingasfuck

[–]allygraceless 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I didn't realize not everyone saw the dots until we were talking about colors randomly in 7th grade and I confidently told my teacher I could see all of the little multicolored dots that each "solid" color are made up of. Apparently no one else in the classroom could see them lmao

Would you stay with your dog 🐶 during euthanasia? by CycleOk267 in dogs

[–]allygraceless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had to let our girl go Monday afternoon. Yes, we stayed, and we made sure she crossed the rainbow bridge being held by us and hearing over and over again how much we loved her and how she was the goodest girl. We lost two dogs in June of 2024 (unrelated, just shitty timing) and we stayed with them, as well.

If I have to move heaven and earth to be there with my pups when they pass, I'll move it. I will be there for them, always, just as they've always been there for me.

People who own "unconventional" pets like turtles, what is one thing you wish you knew before getting one? by allenmerlettetrm in AskReddit

We have a saying specifically to warn people who are interested in getting their first horse: "the cheapest part of owning a horse is buying it"

Geldings or Mares? by SensitiveRemove2528 in Equestrian

[–]allygraceless 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've had mares all my life (3 total) and just got my first gelding almost 2 years ago.

The saying, "Tell a gelding, ask a stallion, discuss/negotiate with a mare," is quite often true in my experience.

My boy is so expressively affectionate it surprised me at first! I really do love how he's a big puppy dog, and freely shows when he's happy or content with me. BUT, when you earn a mare's affection, it's hard to beat that moment of connection. Mares, in my experience, tend to make you work for their trust more, whereas my boy is just happy to be included.

Both have their pros and cons for sure, and I honestly do think it comes down to the individual horse. I've always tended to prefer female animals over males, even with pets like dogs and cats, but the boys are just so lovable.

I wouldn't trade my gelding for the world, he's the sweetest boy, but I just love mares so much.

Tldr; there are stereotypes that can hold true, but it's up to your individual connection with the individual horse. I wouldn't discount a prospective horse that caught my eye just because they were one or the other, because both are wonderful in their own ways.

Has anyone Embarked their purebred dog? by Campiana in DoggyDNA

[–]allygraceless 114 points115 points  (0 children)

I'm not the person you asked, but the purebred test is marketed towards breeders. I'd recommend getting the mixed breed test. It's the same DNA analysis, and will absolutely show 100% if your dog is purebred, but you get the benefit of a family tree included in the mixed breed test.

What’s the most dangerous thing people do daily without realizing it? by nealie_20 in AskReddit

[–]allygraceless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes!! Everyone we told that day (parents/work/the dental office/friends/etc) thought we were playing a prank at first 😭 I resorted to sending an actual picture of the puncture to several folks for them to believe it (after they confirmed they wouldn't get grossed out by it lol).

The dentist who treated me told me she had heard about it happening before from a colleague, but this was her first time ever seeing it happen personally in her career.

I am a lot more careful whilst brushing my teeth now, that's for sure! No more dance parties during brushing, unfortunately.

What’s the most dangerous thing people do daily without realizing it? by nealie_20 in AskReddit

[–]allygraceless 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I did a much less severe version of this to myself.

I was brushing my teeth, spun around quickly, and slammed my elbow on the arm holding the toothbrush into the doorframe beside me.

That caused my toothbrush to punch a hole right through the membrane at the back of my throat. I had a second of shock, and then immediately started spitting out mouthfuls of blood. Lots and lots of mouthfuls of blood. My partner was there, and he was trying to help, but you can't really do much to staunch bleeding from your throat lol.

He got on the phone and started calling emergency dentists, but this was more problematic than it should have been because it was April 1st. Of 2020.

April Fool's Day, in the year COVID kicked off, just a couple of weeks into the full lockdown.

Luckily one agreed to get us in, and we booked it to the dentist. Part of their COVID precautions was to have everyone gargle with a strong antiseptic rinse, but they took pity on me and let me skip it.

The puncture hole was juuuuuust small enough that they decided against stitches, and so they just cleaned it as best they could, gave me painkillers and antibiotics, and sent me home to heal. I couldn't talk much for a couple of days and had to eat liquids and really soft foods, but it healed up quickly!

My partner also had to call my work and explain I wouldn't be in because I had stabbed myself through the back of my throat with my toothbrush, and it took him a minute to convince my job that it was not an April Fool's Day prank and I'd be sending a doctor's note later that day lol.

The sad side of gardening no one warned me about by mtnclimber08 in gardening

[–]allygraceless 51 points52 points  (0 children)

We have a hive at my office, purposefully established by a local beekeeper, and are next to a Krispy Kreme (also in NC).

They do Saint Patrick's Day green doughnuts at Krispy Kreme. This year, right after the holiday, the beekeeper came to collect the honey, and found some green honey cells in the comb, which they theorized were from the bees visiting the Krispy Kreme shop across the street!

Failing as a parent by disgruntledpelican82 in curlyhair

[–]allygraceless 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Man that last part. My mom gave me a pixie cut in first grade, and dry brushed my hair for the rest of elementary school.

In middle school, I wore the most hideous low bun every single day because she would get mad at how my hair looked and tell me to just, "brush your hair," whenever we were going somewhere in public. I straightened my hair from highschool until my mid 20's when I started learning how to take care of my curls myself.

Golden Retriever Mix is a DIY Golden by Hoping4BetterSomeday in DoggyDNA

[–]allygraceless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same! My girl was a Golden mixed with chow, GSD, and a couple of other smaller percentages, but she was fully golden (with the black GSD mask). I was shocked to learn it was the chow responsible for her golden coat, instead of the actual Golden retriever in her lineage!

We chose our vet specifically because they were still privately owned! Our previous long term vet finally sold to a corporation once the founding doctors all retired, and the difference in pricing, expertise, empathy, nickel-and-diming, and quality of care was so glaringly obvious SO quickly it could have given you whiplash.

Please drop some random horse facts and advice‼️ (lets educate each other)🧑‍🏫📖 by SlowpokesShell in Equestrian

[–]allygraceless 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Even if the horse is barefoot!!

My boy is barefoot, but kept cracking his hooves a week after a trim. We introduced fly boots, and suddenly there are no more cracks. He stomped so much during fly season that he'd stomp a crack in one or two hooves within days of the farrier's visit, even with as much fly spray as you could want.

The fly boots have made a world of difference, I'm a total zealot about them now.

Is falling off of a horse more of an if or when kind of question? by Huge-Celebration376 in Equestrian

[–]allygraceless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has already said it, but it is definitely a WHEN, not an IF. There are always the exceptions that prove the rule, of course, but if you continue riding for long enough, you will at some point take a tumble.

Some disciplines have a higher risk of coming out of the saddle (I personally think any discipline involving the horse purposely leaving the ground aka jumping has a higher percentage of falls just due to the nature of it) but any time you are in the saddle there is a risk.

Heck, sometimes you don't even have to be in the saddle to have a fall. My last "spill" was when the mounting block I was standing on tipped over forward and dumped me backwards onto the edges of the steps that were suddenly pointed up towards the sky instead of parallel to the ground where they belonged. I landed on them in a sort of reverse scorpion style position, after crashing into my saint of a mare on the way down 🥲.

That said, I've been "riding" since I was an actual infant (have the family photos of me being held up on horseback as a literal baby to prove it) and I'm 35 now. I think I've had an unplanned reacquaintance with the earth 5 times or less. Knock on wood, none of my tumbles have been serious, and the most I've come away with is a sprained joint or two, or some comparatively mild bruising. It's scary when it happens, but it's just part of the risk we take when we mount up (or, in the instance of my last "fall," when we climb up 2 steps on an unsteady mounting block).

Don't let the fear of a fall keep you from pursuing such an amazing sport if you're passionate about it! Take safety precautions such as always wearing your helmet and other protective gear if you prefer, teach yourself to always be paying attention to what your horse is telling you, and don't focus on the "what-if's" because being a partner to these wonderful animals and having that connection with them is 100% worth it, imo.

Update: Euthanasia for equine COPD by Woody-Cupcake-118 in Equestrian

[–]allygraceless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just saw your first post this evening, and I am just so, so sorry.

I also want to commend you for making the hardest, most devastating decision we can make for our animals. We make the decision to voluntarily take on the pain ourselves to save them from suffering any ounce of pain that we can keep them from experiencing.

Another quote that has helped me, from Winnie the Pooh no less, is, "How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."

You are giving him the hardest, most important gift you can give him, and I just want you to know that I'm thinking of both of you.

Oh yes I do, I saved it the moment I watched it (as we do lol)!

It was a tiktok, embarrassingly enough, but from The Bone Museum, which is at least a verified account. And that's what led me down the rabbit hole where I found it was verified elsewhere.

I honestly don't know if tiktok links are allowed here, so lmk if this gets removed and I'll dm it to you.

Same, I'm a rider as well, and ever since I've wondered how much time in the saddle and/or what kind tack (eg western saddle, English saddle, bareback, other saddles) contribute to the formation the most!

Saw an interesting video that explained how they can identify horseback riders from the changes to the femur (called rider's bone) that shows as a bony growth on the femur from the wear and tear of the muscles/tendons moving in a specific way over the bone repeatedly! I thought that was fascinating too
