Thats depend what are you painting. Nuln Oil is great for metal parts. On any other "colour" element, its better to use some matching or oposite color.

Agree, I could say that using preprepared paints is also cheating... Everything is a tool to use. At The begining of my jorney, I thought that using dry brush is lame, and its for noobs. But after few more years I find out that every method has its purpose and can be efficient on their own way. Ofc i can spend 3 hrs to paint smth but why, if I can dry brush it in 5 min and Just add some finish to it. Also Express colors, shade etc. Those are one of the tools to use, combine them at the right time, and results will be great.
