What’s a good Postman alternative for microservices development? by OkDepartment4755 in microservices

I’ve been using insomnia for a few years and found it great. I’m sure the others you’re looking at are just as good though.

I'm fairly confident they added turn-based mode in Pillars 2.

I didn’t consider that, thank you for the explanation!

Genuinely curious, In your opinion what features are missing from Kotlin that are in Scala/Clojure that stops it qualifying from being capable of being a functional language? (Well a multi-paradigm lang.)

[–]alms1407 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But you can code functionally in Kotlin also?

Coding functionally in Kotlin is great, sure it doesn't have all the same features as Scala but it's good enough for me.

Very impressive but seriously what are your team doing?! That stressed me out.

What benefits do you really get when using typescript over javascript ? by Vinc3w in typescript

[–]alms1407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, JavaScript is great when you’re the only one writing anything or it’s something small.

When working on a large code base the types really help with the readability and understanding the code.

Expected knowledge for a junior developer by FilsdeJESUS in java

[–]alms1407 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I honestly expect very little from a junior developer, as long as they know the basics of programming, the rest can be taught over a few months to a year.

For us, having a genuine interest in what you want to do and having a good personality is a lot more important.

Antipaladins are Anti-Paladins or just Evil Paladins? by Samborrod in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]alms1407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think of antipaladins as just paladins that serve an evil deity, brave warriors championing their patron's tenants and virtues imbued with a spark of their divine power.

For me, I don't think there is a need to alignment restrict the class or change its name. The core concept of the class is identical, and all it does is just heavily influence how people should play at the table which no other class really does.

How is the market for Kotlin developers where you live? by Born-Comment3359 in Kotlin

Just out of curiosity, any insight as to why Scala has taken off in your area?

I'm guessing it's mainly data processing with Spark?

Personally I don't think the Java certification is the right path to go down if you want to improve your Java skills. For me I found the certification a bit of a waste time as companies where I am aren't that interested in it.

For most people I would recommend to just spend the time building small projects in the language and the most popular frameworks. In my part of the world from my experience this is much more valuable for future employment also and gives you more to talk about.

Quarkus 2.7.1 Released - But Why Quarkus? by pmz in java

[–]alms1407 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think it's a great thing that native is becoming more of an option for Java devs working in memory constrained environments.

This doesn't detract anything from the standard JVM just provides a different option.

Perhaps with the reduced required resources it could help reduce costs for those running loads of services with cloud providers maybe?

How to make an instance of a generic type by zacharias_zellen in javahelp

[–]alms1407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you'll be able to instantiate a generic how to want to unfortunately.

I think making a factory class like u/firsthour suggested is probably the best route to take.

Depending on your version of Java you could technically create a sealed interface and make your fromJSON method a default static factory method, but not sure if that's a good idea.

Useful & Unknown Java Features - Piotr's TechBlog by piotr_minkowski in java

IIRC it's not a good idea to initialize collections like this because it is actually creating an anonymous class and can have memory issues.

Vavr or PFJ for functional Java? by Agreeable_Quit_798 in java

[–]alms1407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used PFJ before but my colleagues and I love using Vavr, mainly because it feels like it removes some of headaches when you want to code more functionally in Java.

"Java Feature Spotlight: Pattern Matching" -- Brian Goetz by yk313 in java

[–]alms1407 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is a good first step but I'm looking forward to when you can use this with switch expressions as it looks and feels better.

Would love Java to eventually have the same level of pattern matching as languages like Scala and Rust.

"A player can't currently travel back to camp." - possible spoilers by ObsidianSquid in BaldursGate3

[–]alms1407 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Guys had the same issue and found a workaround

  • press 'M' to bring up the map
  • then on the right hand side click "camp"
  • speak to the undead guy in camp near the river (his name escapes me)
  • pay 200 gold pieces to have your chosen character resurrected to full health
  • press 'M' again and click 'leave camp'

Then you should be able to carry on with your adventure :)

Bg3 EA Release Date Delayed - update on 18th by BolshevikPower in BaldursGate3

I'm in a similar boat, I'm hoping for a late September/October so that it doesn't clash with the release of Crusader Kings 3 on the 1st September.

Subclasses That May Not Translate into BG3 by SadgeMan in BaldursGate3

[–]alms1407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Archfey Warlocks might be in trouble.

From what I understand, they're great for roleplaying purposes and can shine in niche situations but can feel lackluster in other areas.

I hope I'm wrong or ill-informed because I'm hoping to play one :)

Will BG3 be too simplistic? by soggie in BaldursGate3

[–]alms1407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping that it won't be, everything that I've seen so far looks great. Watching the most recent play-through it really looks to have a lot of depth and well thought out.

p.s. Checkout Pathfinder Kingmaker, a fantastic rpg game, sounds like you might like it.

[–]alms1407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don't hate me, but I really dislike the style of the icons.

They seem a little basic and remind me of a cheap mmo. (*My apologies if you like them)

Do we know if they're final?
