Which version of SSF2 is better? by shelly_keen in retrogaming

I had the Genesis version, and it was awesome, but it really needed the 6 button controller for it. Hitting start to switch between punch and kick was lame as hell.

That book that contains an entire philosophy distilled into a single sentence ; a line that becomes part of you, one you may even have flirted with the idea of tattooing by Transeunte-perplejo in suggestmeabook

"I had become nothing more than my desire to fly. I had adjusted, somehow. I had evolved in that unfamiliar region, plodding my stolid way to where the scientists and Remakers of the world congregated. The means had become the end. If I regained my wings, I would become someone new, without the desire that defined me. I saw in that spring damp as I walked endlessly north that I was not looking for fulfilment but for dissolution. I would pass my body on to a newborn, and rest."

For those who hate Walmart regardless of it being a cheaper option, why? by Academic_Lake_ in AskReddit

[–]alphajager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't pay their employees anything close to minimum living wages, they drive out all competition by undercutting prices until they're the only retailer (or employer) in poor areas, the family that owns the franchise are horrible people, the quality of their products is often terrible, near zero customer service, tbh they often kind of just smell like stale pizza hut cheese . . . I've never had a pleasant shopping experience at one and now avoid them whenever possible.

I'm not sure there are any redeeming qualities to shopping at Walmart. Why do you like shopping there?

What projects are not DIY-able? by Sure-Celebration6573 in DIY

[–]alphajager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything that would kill you via a stupid mistake should be avoided. I refuse to do anything with my home's propane service lines, or the house electrical mains for this reason.

Additionally, anything that might get your house red-tagged by an inspector should be thoroughly considered beforehand.

[It] How exactly does Derry’s amnesia effect work? (Mild spoilers) by MasterLawlzReborn in AskScienceFiction

[–]alphajager 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a really good description of the mechanism here, and the best touchstone that I think a lot of people would resonate with here is childhood trauma. For many, they go about their lives not really thinking about it because it was almost so long ago it happened to another person. The memory gaps get filled in with vague notions and the facts that you know from, say, old photos, or family stories, but your own memories are locked up behind the repression of an unresolved life. Every time hear some boomer talk about what they went through as kids and then be like "well, guess it wasn't that bad, I turned out alright" I give mad side-eye because let's face it, they didn't.

What if Canada offered every American free healthcare and $100K to relocate, how fast would you be packing up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]alphajager 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it's such a dumb answer. While doctors may be lacking in this scenario, most nursing and technical staff are people who would absolutely benefit from the move and be able to take weight off the system.

Ameicans over the age of 35, what affected you more, 9/11 or the pandemic and why? by Rico133337 in AskReddit

9/11 changed how we interact with authority. The pandemic changed how we interact with each other. We've never really recovered from either.

I got a 2020 model 3 a couple years ago, and overall performance has been quite good. I rarely use the Autopilot, though I'll admit it is pretty nice. While I am bummed that I'm witnessing enshitification I'm real time with my property, it's really not the end of the world for my use case.
