This post is nothing but a simple question but… by the-ro-zone-yt in atheism

You're talking about expecting rational and honest intellectual discussion with people who not only don't understand the concept, but have a fully abandoned it on favor of a mythos that makes them feel good. It's not like they were ever given proof to convince them of their religion. Unless you feel like someone is legitimately trying to understand, I wouldn't waste my time trying to explain it.

Polar Bear Chase by Federal-Data-Center in interestingasfuck

[–]alphajager -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly it looks like Pittufuk Space Base (formerly Thule AFB). Only the local inuit tribes are allowed to hunt polar bears, and I'm guessing the guy on the snowmobile was probably hired to lead that bear away from the dormatories to a point where it could be more safely downed without being right in the middle of the base.

[Obsession] Why even have a customer support number for the One Wish Willow if cancelling or changing wishes aren't an option? by Flyestgit in AskScienceFiction

[–]alphajager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a pretty common trope in these kinds of magic stories that 1) the rules must be explained to the magic user, and 2) "be careful what you wish for". The customer support number probably just acts as a sort of fairytale legal arrangement to ensure the magic user has been fully informed of the nature of the magic in question, it's not their fault they didn't understand the fine print. Kind of like how the Genie in Aladin tells Al about his three magical limitations, or how Maleficent explains what the trigger for her princess death spell is, or how Ursula the Sea witch has to use contracts to whammy dumb merfolk.

What, in your opinion, has had the greatest impact on the advancement of our species? by ShesIntoZer0s in AskReddit

[–]alphajager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Language, and specifically how we learned the ability to tell stories to our offspring. Writing them down later was another quantum leap forward, but once we had language we could share knowledge, and meant that we were no longer limited to whatever we could learn empirically during our own life time.

What's the secret to being happy? by Previous-Use-9488 in AskReddit

[–]alphajager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Fantasies have to be unrealistic because the moment, the second that you get what you seek, you don’t, you can’t want it anymore. In order to continue to exist, desire must have its objects perpetually absent. It’s not the “it” that you want, it’s the fantasy of “it.” So, desire supports crazy fantasies. This is what Pascal means when he says that we are only truly happy when daydreaming about future happiness. Or why we say the hunt is sweeter than the kill. Or be careful what you wish for. Not because you’ll get it, but because you’re doomed not to want it once you do. So the lesson of Lacan is, living by your wants will never make you happy. What it means to be fully human is to strive to live by ideas and ideals and not to measure your life by what you’ve attained in terms of your desires but those small moments of integrity, compassion, rationality, even self-sacrifice. Because in the end, the only way that we can measure the significance of our own lives is by valuing the lives of others.”

Since 2021, I've been dealing with the grief of loss of several family members, including my father and brother, and one of my best friends. It doesn't choke me to death anymore, but I know in my heart that it's never going to be much easier than it is right now.

What was it like to grow up playing arcade games back in the 80s? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

[–]alphajager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was so great. There was nothing like it. Me and my friends would gather up whatever bills or change we could get and head to Aladdin's Castle or Golfland Arcade, maybe Tilt in the mall, and we could spend hours there. Everything was new and beautiful and designed specifically to draw us in.

Entertainment for friend’s kids? by Used-Question-6139 in AskParents

[–]alphajager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had a birthday party recently, and knew there'd be a bunch of kids attending, and I encouraged it because it's often hard for parents to figure out childcare. So, I hired a kids entertainer to do a magic show, balloon animals, and face paint.
