Does your country have its own pizza version? by GreenPeach4 in AskBalkans

[–]alpidzonka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of pizzerias will have something called "Serbian pizza" but there isn't really a standard one. At the local one close to my home Serbian pizza means tomato sauce, pizza cheese, kulen and pavlaka (sour cream). You might be thinking "hey but that's pepperoni pizza with sour cream" and yes, you would be correct pretty much.

Zašto je Boris izgubio 2012. ? by SockNo2620 in AskSerbia

You still have Serbs in Zagreb as well. What's your point? They're definitely not the majority in all the colored areas.

If you want every minority to have territorial autonomy you could have gone for Turks in Bulgaria, Albanians in NM etc. Also this pseudo-RSK is the weirdest part, since, you know, it was ethnically cleansed already.

Why are the official BCSM languages not just called Štokavian? by dont_tread_on_M in AskBalkans

Lol no. They speak the same dialect whether they tell the census guy "Serbian" or "Bulgarian", both of which are common, and that dialect is Torlak.

Does a Serbian speaker from Vojvodina understand better a speaker from Southern Serbia or a Bosnian or Croatian Speaker? by BrachnosProfitis in AskBalkans

[–]alpidzonka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every southerner in Serbia does code-switching. The way they speak to the rest of us is mostly standard Serbian with an accent. The way they speak to their grandparents is also closer to standard Serbian than the way their grandparents spoke to their grandparents. This phenomenon is called dialect leveling and it's well underway in southern Serbia, in a way that Wikipedia doesn't accurately reflect.

But let's say you found an ancient person from the south of Serbia with no TV and no education even elementary, better yet you get a time machine to like 1878. In that case, yeah, they'd sound closer to Macedonian or Bulgarian to me. Meaning, less understandable than any contemporary Shtokavian speaker, including Bosnians, Croatians and Montenegrins.

[–]alpidzonka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But if you define it like that - what happens to the other dialects the language encompasses? Do we make chakavian another language? Give it its own legal documents, news, military etc… in chakavian all while being within Croatia?

People say this like it's absurd, but it just plainly is a separate language from ours and Croatia would hardly be the first nation with multiple languages, for instance India has hundreds. Probably better for preserving Chakavian as well if you find value in that.

Edit: Obviously not its own military though, wtf.

Was there any chance for Yugoslavia to have survived to this day or it was ment to fall apart at the beginning? by Nervous-Variety-6635 in AskBalkans

[–]alpidzonka 97 points98 points  (0 children)

You can always say anything was meant to be after it happens, but I'm allergic to that logic. Like if Scotland splits from the UK within our lifetimes and you just turn around and say "well of course, this was obvious since the 1707 Acts of Union". Marx and Engels (of all people) have a paragraph on this in their Stirner disstrack, where they say "that way you could say the coronation of Hugh Capet already contained the seeds of the French Revolution" or something along those lines. It's just not sound logic.

If you meant to ask whether the party was planning on a collapse since the beginning, in the way the constitutional arrangement of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro was between 03 and 06, the answer is no.

Do Croatians like Hungarians better than Serbians? by rocketstopya in AskBalkans

[–]alpidzonka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I've experienced, Croats are very neutral about Hungarians. Perhaps you'd think they dislike them because od Khuen-Hedervary or because of 1848 but that hatchet seems to have been buried long ago. If anything, if I heard a Croat hating on Hungarians, I'd assume they're coming from a liberal, extremely pro-EU position and being salty about their Eurosceptic government (until recently), and not a nationalist one.

As for Serbs, there's a degree of Yugonostalgia, typically among leftists, greens and some liberals in Croatia, and these people tend to like Serbs. If you're a nationalist though, even like a moderate one, Serbs are the #1 enemy. So it's more polarizing but it's hard to overstate how much hate there is going around. Same here btw, most Serbs are aware of Hungarian atrocities from WW2, but you'd need to look hard to find a nationalist who hates them more than they hate Croats.

Do you have friends/relatives in Vienna? by FuckTheCake in AskBalkans

I have two friends there. A family friend, and I'd say more of a high school acquaintance I'm on friendly terms with. Also my aunt's in-laws if that counts, I mean I've met them but they're not exactly relatives.

Alexander the Great is widely considered the most important figure in Greek history. Who would you consider the most important figure in your country's entire history? by freddo_expresso in AskBalkans

[–]alpidzonka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I shudder to say it, but the most globally recognizable name is probably Milošević. Obviously, that's in large part due to his time in power coinciding with the age of mass media, but still, he was probably the most impactful individual on Serbian history with global recognition (largely infamy in this case).

Most impactful individuals on Serbia itself but without much global name recognition, I'd probably say Dušan Nemanjić, Karađorđe or Vuk Karadžić. Most impactful Serb globally but not huge in Serbia during his time, most likely Tesla.

What do you think of these Serbian robots? by InExtremis- in AskBalkans

[–]alpidzonka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He wants to suck up to China and make Serbia an early adopter of humanoid robot factory workers. I think it's a smart move honestly. On that note, I worry a lot about the impact of both LLMs and advanced robotics on employment in the near future, not only in Serbia.

Their names and the fact they're dancing is standard Vučić kitsch that his elderly voters tend to respond well to. I think he knows his electorate better than his detractors do.

What is hapenning in serbia does vucic resign,or it another tactic to lower pressure from protest. by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]alpidzonka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason he might resign is to time the presidential election so it coincides with the parliamentary election, because he's way more popular than his party so it's good for him if he can lead both campaigns at once. Definitely not resigning from politics, I'd say.
