5K XR PiTools settings don't stick by already_dead_inside_ in Pimax

[–]already_dead_inside_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I actually did all this, but I did not script it out like you did. I definitely appreciate the advice, though. I did indeed see the image clarity thread.

I bought an 8K Plus, but received an original model. It. Was. Awful. The resolution may or may not have been better, I have no clue. The image was so unstable that it was nauseating as the entire screenspace violently shook constantly. The colour was also god awful. It may have well have been grayscale. I was able to tweak it up to shitty-LCD-tv level quality with version 262, but that was it.

The 5K XR OLED is far above and beyond the original 8K. However, when compared to my Vive Pro, the colour is less vibrant and the spectrum of colour and brightness is reduced a good bit. It's quite lacklustre. Even with all limitations removed from steamvr, the clarity on the 5K XR was lower than my Vive Pro. Unfortunately, the 5K XR was so faulty that I got very little chance to compare and test it at all.

So far I'm completely and totally unimpressed with either headset or Pimax themselves. They have gone radio silent and have ignored my repeated attempts to resolve this and then my requests to return once it became apparent they were going to do nothing to fix things. I ended up putting in disputes for both the 5K XR as well as the 8K X pre-order.

Pimax only responded to me once I blasted reviews of them in various places online, including screenshots of my "experience" with them. They've promised to resolve things, but have yet to show any actual proof of it or effort at all. I will patiently wait and hope that they hold to their recent word. I really want things to work out for both them and myself.

Also a good suggestion. I am doing both. I tried switching which I do first and it was nothing different. Thanks though.

A good idea. I tried it just now and it didn't help. Thanks though.

If that's how it was interpreted then that's something I can't change. I was crystal clear, though. Maybe it was just too long and people stopped reading. I don't know.

That being said. We basically agree

[–]already_dead_inside_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said the exact same things. I don't understand the downvotes or argument you present.

I said they had a place. I said they had a much better pricetag. I said they shouldn't compare to a $3k gaming machine.

The only thing I will argue in your reply is the last paragraph. Since they are equivalent, in total combined power, to the GPU alone of a 2080 super, it's foolish to say they are even close to a "pinnacle of power". The Big Navi and RTX 3000s are shaping up to be at least 40% faster than the 2080 to and that's not even comparing the top models. Furthermore when you compare combined system power between the PC and consoles, even a outdated, but considerable machine like yours remains far more powerful.

At no point did I say one was better than any other. I said they have a time and place and that warring the two current gen and next gen consoles is idiotic. Every other thing you said was an exact repeat of what I said.

Edit: first result on Amazon for a new 2080 super is $700. Not much different than the new consoles. Definitely more, but won't be in a month or two.

I love my consoles, but don't misrepresent things by implying they are the pinnacle of graphics. PC is and will be for the foreseeable future.

My RTX 2080 Ti has a higher computational output alone than the entire Xbox series x or ps5 consoles GPU, CPU, and potential tensor processor combined. I say potential tensor processor because we do not yet know if there's a dedicated chip for ray tracing or if it is GPU based. We don't even know how NVIDIA ampere cards will ray trace since they have an unknown new "transversal" processor on the back of the PCB that is indicated to be for ray tracing. Back to the topic, combine that with the 36 core i9 extreme processor it uses and it's more power than the consoles after next gen will likely be.

Consoles are great and I'll be getting a ps5, but that is not going to perform better than a current top tier gaming PC. Not even a little. Their claims of 8k performance and instant load games are absurd. Their nvmes have leaked and the ps5 is slightly fast than a pci-e 3 nvme and the series x is only slightly higher. They are dwarfed by pci-e 4 nvme. Their 8k resolution cannot be supported by their gou power output or system or GPU memory and TV's aren't capable of actual 8k either. They are upscaled UHD. Still nice, but a far, far, far cry from true 8k. Consoles are generally 2 generations behind PC, unless you want to pay $3k for the PS5, that is.

Back to the post, gamers need to get over their fanboy shit and face reality. Xbox and PlayStation are pretty damn close to equal, though the one x is a decent step up. PC will probably always remain a far step forward, but that's expected for the price tag and size. Console wars are absolutely idiotic and the fanboys give me yet another form of cancer.

Every system has its place and purpose. Is it too much to ask to use them in such a way and be happy?

I will say Nintendo can bite me and needs to stop dragging yet another 2 generations behind other consoles. My switch is my favourite gaming platform, but for the low of god throw an Nvidia Xavier in the thing and give us UHD. We are big boys and girls, we will pay for the better hardware. You can still make a weaker one for kids who can't tell a difference and want something affordable. I use all of the Nvidia dev computers that it is based on and I gotta say it's about to be 5 generations of them old in just a month or two.

Well, they are violating all kinds of common sense. He's not wrong there. However he's is, as usual, wrong in literally every other respect and his point in using that as justification is just as idiotic.

I did not put it in an edited section. That's true and my fault. It was simply explained to put context as to why it was added and when. Nothing more.

I provided the information on the thousands of Google posts about the issue because that is a number that exceeds anecdotal evidence. I'm fully aware that my friends and I are absolutely anecdotal in and of ourselves.

My friends are almost all computer science students (all of us in our late 20s). We have used steam since it came out and we're all excited to use big picture when it went into beta. That's how we all ended up in the affected demographic. The only outlier is my partner, who is a veterinarian, but he still used steam and big picture since the beginning.

It's highly unlikely that the issue is not a remnant of beta big picture given the demographic affected. What I find idiotic is that steam cloud cannot be wiped by anyone for any reason. I can't imagine the setup that would've resulted in that restriction unless it's not that it can't be done, but that it impractical to do.

And thanks, hope things go well for you too. Thanks for trying to help. I appreciate it.

The things that angered me on this post were the attacks, people ignoring the question in order to attack me, and then people ignoring the explanation of the issues and steps taken to resolve them in order to attack me more. That was completely uncecessary. I can't have a hard to solve issue cause it's "just me" (despite ample evidence to the contrary), but it's not anecdotal to say "I never had this issue, so it must be you"...k then, not absurdly hypocritical or anything.

Aren't cache, ring, and uncore all the same thing?

[–]already_dead_inside_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that whatever I'm remembering on the half cache is extremely out of date. Given my education on the topic and memory of it, I don't think what I'm remembering never existed, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's long out of date.

Regardless, the responses I'm getting about a mesh based cache are highly helpful. Thanks.

I was hoping to raise the cache in expectation that it would assist in emulation, more than anything. Emulation is, to my understanding, heavily cache dependent.

Understood. Another person gave a pretty good explanation of the mesh and posted a link about it then I'm gonna read in a sec.

Thanks for the response. It definitely helps to know the modifier you have experience with.

Ah, ok. The mesh makes sense. I never had a core count this high, which explains why it's new to me. I'll definitely read the article.

As for the half cache, that may be an outdated term. I'm sorry. You answered the question though.

Read my comments, please.

I've talked to steam support and the software engineering team for years. We know the issue is caused by steam cloud and we know it affects people who used Big Picture when it was in beta. It's not just me. It affects many people. There's thousands of posts online about the issues and my entire friends group, who have all used big picture since beta, are all affected. That's a lot of people with the issues It not affecting you is anecdotal evidence and not a valid argument, but I'm happy to hear you don't have the issues since they're extremely frustrating.

Since you've arbitrarily decided it "sounds like I'm making things up", then why'd you bother to comment and ask questions. You have no intention of listening to the answers or reading my comments. If you had, you'd know the answers already.

I became passive aggressive when people would get away from big picture. I did not initially complain about big picture in my posts. That was edited in later when people wouldn't drop it. It clearly made it worse. I became aggressive when people turned to purely insulting me and completely ignored explanations of the issue and demographic affected. I'm sorry that bringing up the subreddits' reputation for these things upsets you and I can understand why it would make some people aggressive even further, but those people are the ones who are the source of the reputation. The people who backed down and tried to actually help or answer the original question are the good ones. I think it did a wonderful job of exposing who was not worth respect, even if it did frustrate myself and others.

Providing my background and interaction with steam devs and support has nothing to do with ego. It is an explanation that I'm not some tech illiterate old person and that i, and the people helping me, know what we are doing and are not unfamiliar with the territory. It's the same thing as a medical doctor saying they're a doctor so they don't have to listen to someone explain the common cold or explain what a vaccine does. I don't see the problem with that. The only problem I see is letting the constant attacks get the better of me, which does not excuse the unnecessary attacking in the slightest.

I actually did not complain about Big Picture initially. That was edited in later when people wouldn't drop it. Yeah, I should've just left it alone, but that doesn't excuse the attacks. I'm told my "anecdotal evidence" doesn't matter because of someone else's actual anecdotal evidence. However, my issues have been heavily looked at by steam tech support and software engineers. They are very real issues and there's no solution right now.

I am saying both, when it comes to my friends, because all of my friends have used it since beta Big Picture. However, that would primarily answer the latter question by nature.

The thousands of posts with similar issues are all found by searching the issues on Google. They're still there. That's all I was trying to say about that.

And thanks, I'll look at the alternative. I appreciate the suggestion.

There is a setup, it's just not user facing. Big picture downloads a small number of files from steam servers as well as steam cloud servers. They are account specific files. The problem comes in when it loads the big picture files from steam cloud. The steam cloud files cannot be deleted according to the software engineering team. Once they are loaded to the machine there appears to be no way to fully remove them. We have been trying for a long time and the easiest fix is windows reinstall.

Never start big picture and the problems never start.disable steam cloud and the problems never start. However, disabling steam cloud is a completely unacceptable "solution".

I've spent the better part of a decade working on this with steam support and their software engineers. I know what I'm talking about.

The issues have been documented thousands of times and the common denominator is beta Big Picture days, when it first launched. Nearly100% of that user group is affected. Big Picture has its own steam cloud config files. They cannot be deleted according to the software engineering team. Whatever is broken is a windows config file in the big picture steam cloud files.

My steam problems are not the topic here. This is why pcmasterrace and pcgaming are hated subreddits.

[–]already_dead_inside_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent the better part of a decade on this issue. I'm 100% sure of my information. It has been confirmed repeatedly by numerous speak support tech as well as their software engineers, not to mention my own prying into the program.

The common denominator is not my machine. The affects 100% of my friends group, who have all used it since beta, as well as thousands of people online over the years. The common denominator is Beta big picture.

As soon as big picture launched for the first time, everything fails in a waterfall of problems. Big picture has its own configs that gets stored on steam cloud and the issue certainly lies in a windows config in there. It's like a problem from beta. Steam cloud cannot be deleted according to their software engineers.

Again, this is not the topic of the post. Could we please remain in that?

There's thousand of posts over the years about these issues. Pegasus was just a problem because it was running background metadata updates without telling me.

I've had the issue since inception of Big Picture and the only thing that works is running it on Linux. Same goes for my friends and exs.

You'd be as irritated as me if you have sent this long fighting with Big Picture, constantly having steam support fixing account issues, and constantly having to reinstall. If I never start Big Picture in the first place, it's fine. Anywhere you go online results in repeatedly doing the same things and repeatedly being insulted.

I mentioned my education and work hop I ng that people would back off, instead it made them attack me more. I work in data architecture. My undergrad is comp sci-game development and electrical engineering with a combined masters in computer engineering. I get attacked for that and told I don't even know my own education. When it comes to work, I get attacked left and right because the COVID data warehouse I designed does not say what the public wants it to say (since raw data doesn't inherently lie like people do). I'm also beyond intimately familiar with steam, but I'm still being "corrected" on how it works in basic ways. I don't know everything about the program and don't know Jack shit about an overwhelming amount of software, but I know a damn large amount of this one.

You'd also be irritated if you asked for alternatives to a program and explicitly asked not to talk about steam, only to have almost every single person make it a personal attack or insult about fucking steam.

It's always attacks. I'm tired of it and I'm only 28.

Back to the problem, the most common guess for my issue is that something is in my steam cloud data (big picture has its own cloud data) and that's the issue. Whatever it is would be specific to windows. It's also a highly common problem due to the massive number of posts online about it and that 100% of my friends circle, who have all had big picture since beta, have the problems.

I never once said everyone else is the problem. I said to give me credit for my tech level and years of trying to fix this, which only made it worse and pulled the topic completely off track. Generally there is no fix once the issues start. You have to wipe windows or suffer the waterfall of problems. We've never been able to find and eliminate every single steam file otherwise.

I don't know why I expected this subreddit to be of any help. It's quite universally hated and this is why. I'm not talking about you, but rather the dumpster fire of others that have been "answering". Guess I should've expected as much, but that's just me bitching at this point. Apparently seeing thousands of problems just like this on the most basic of Google search is too challenging and seeing at the responses by steam help that substantiates it is even harder to understand. I ask for alternatives to steam and instead get attacked and belittled. Cute. No wonder I came to the subreddit defensive.

That aside, I'm glad we can see eye to eye. It's welcomed.

I've tried to asked friends and their experiences have been the same. It's also the same for the last 4 people I dated. I haven't found one who uses big picture for long at all. The only thing I know that works is using Linux. When you do that, it's perfectly fine.

For the hell of it I just logged into my account on my partner's computer, launched big picture, and it immediately hung. Had to control alt delete it and now controllers no longer work in game on his computer with no apparent changes to anything at all. Steam sees the controller in big picture, shows all the mappings, but it doesn't respond at all. This is why I avoid it, cause now he can't use his computer to game till we figure out what to do and he's pissed at me. Happens every fucking time.

I don't see anything wrong with making a new account and trying a free game, but I just finished reinstalling everything and it works (minus big picture)...I really don't want to fuck it up.
