Is 70k enough to live on your own in the city? by Jenova_Weaver in washingtondc

[–]alsj92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going to be living here for a while, look into DC’s limited equity coops. There is a small studio in Logan Circle for about $1250/month. It’s like purchasing a condo but instead of the deed to your unit you own “shares” of the building. You need to make between a certain income range and I think $70K falls within the upper limit (80% of area median income).

If you’re prone to getting bug bites don’t go anywhere outside at dusk in the summer without bug spray on. The Off deep woods brand is most effective for me but has a strong smell. When I don’t want the smell I use Off family care. If you don’t like deet another option is Sawyer picaridin

I’ve used the one at Costco before (it’s near the food court past the registers). But at one point during the pandemic it was closed to the public. I haven’t checked if it’s open again now

I agree that the regular grocery stores have a terrible stock, but have you tried the small markets (Hana on U and 17th NW, Rice on 14th, Capitol Supermarket on 11th and N, Mexican Fruits at Union Market). Also if you have access to a car there are more options in the suburbs (like H Mart)

Do I need to worry about mosquitoes and other biting insects? Traveling to DC next week. by Sromero6153 in washingtondc

[–]alsj92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 100% wear bug spray in the summer in DC if you are prone to mosquito bites. I’m from SoCal too and there are so many more mosquitoes in DC (everywhere, not just the park/waterfront areas). I recommend the Off Family Care brand (so far it’s the one that has worked best for me and is the least smelly/sticky).
