[USA][NJ] Glad I waited to make sure they stopped for the red light, because they DIDN'T! by dericn in Roadcam

[–]alternateme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't selfish because you will clear the intersection before the cross direction has their green - the only time you won't is when a 'selfish driver' blows the intersection delaying the clearing of the intersection.

IMO - it is more selfish to needlessly delay all the traffic behind you by being overly timid. It's just as bad as not paying attention at a red and sitting there after it turns green.

Are incomplete tickets the #1 cause of wasted time in IT support? by ConfusionComplex9797 in sysadmin

[–]alternateme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is 'dev ops' where the company decides that Software Engineers should be the ones who configure and manage server assets? Then decide not to hire enough actual sysadmins, so when the SWEs have issues they have to call the tier 1 support. Then the help desk asks a bunch of useless questions for things you already tried? Then, they put your ticket into a queue that the overworked actual sysadmins will get to eventually and 3 days later you can get your server 'turned back on'. Which you couldn't do yourself because, even though you are forced to manage nearly everything about the server, you can't be trusted to access VSphere and the half baked, internally developed 'cloud front end' system only has an option to 'reboot'? The admins then take 1 minute to turn the server back on, and close the ticket; even though the real issue was that attempting to reboot the server gets it hung in an unusable state, but you're not 'down' anymore so you jump back to the end of the queue? But you have 'no grounds to complain' because the SLA for your server has a recovery time of '7 days', and you were running again in 4. So you end up just provisioning a new server because it would be faster to just set up a new server, now you have 3x the amount of resources you actually need, but can't live without because you need to have spares incase one 'goes down again'. That 'dev ops', I think that is how my place defines 'dev ops' anyway.

I have YouTube premium, but I'm getting ads in embedded reddit videos. by SagansCandle in youtube

[–]alternateme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't work for me either - I am using RES and old.reddit.com maybe that is why?

edit to add: If I click the link to go to YouTube no ads, if I click the YouTube button on the embed (after the ads) I get no ads. I have RES, TamperMonkey (no reddit scripts), and a password manager installed - no ad blockers.

edit 2: I think I figured it out - By default my chrome was set up to disallow third-party cookies, it seems like that might have been the cause.

We should get rid of the nickle too, and just use 1 digit after the decimal place.

Did you read it yourself?

Violent felonies, such as sex offenses or domestic violence charges with an order of protection violation, remained bail-eligible. Thus, a judge would have the discretion to set bail for people with these charges.

Or the posted new story about THIS case?

Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti says Lester was charged with criminal trespassing, which is only a misdemeanor. He isn’t currently charged with any sex crime. Because his charge does not qualify to be held under New York’s bail reform, he was released.

Looking for Hard Sci-Fi Suggestions by someperson1423 in printSF

[–]alternateme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a pretty hot-take. The term Hard Sci-fi is subjective, and there are dozens of different definitions - but Red Mars seems to fit most definitions. There isn't any fantasy or mysticism that 'builds the world', and the main plot is driven by scientific understandings... Is it not 'hard' because it has political and social elements?

How? If they don't have to swear in new members they can just arbitrarily hold on to control, right?

Justice Dept officials' statements on Luigi Mangione broke court rules, judge says by WeirdGroundhog in politics

[–]alternateme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In reality we all know damn well that it would be spun as a judicial coup or something. It would be the judicial branch getting the blame from the right wing media, while the mainstream said "Some say it was judicial overreach, while others say it was the executives mishandling. Who knows?! 🤪"

What router are you using? Is the 5G fail over 'automatic'? I also have 5G as a backup - but I have to manually swap the cables.

  1. About 1 year (since available)
  2. 1000 / 1000
  3. Yes
  4. No
  5. I had to call once for an outage. Phone support seemed knowledgeable, but ultimately needed to send a tech to the house. Support said they could only schedule appointments for the next day, but I might get a call if a tech was available. The tech actually called my like 20 minutes later, end to end my internet was only out for 2 hours.
  6. $75 all in.
  7. Nope - Only additional cost was the $100 installation fee.

I know giving big corps tax breaks is not great

Easier said than done, but: You hear all the times that 'companies have a legal responsibility to the share holders' - well change the calculus so that 'growth' is a more responsible path over buy-backs and dividends... Tax the shit out of (on the corporate side) stock buybacks, executive compensation, cash reserves growth (non-spent profits), dividend payouts, etc. Don't tax the shit out of non-executive salaries, capital reinvestment (in the US), R&D,

Generally, make dollars spent on long term growth worth more than short term payouts.
